Paeom’,—-We find the following very good
parody on Geo. P. Morris’s song, “Near the
Lake,” in an exchange:
\ - . AF-RECTXXQ. I .’ ..
Up in Podnnk, where the thistle
Blooms, dies and rots;
* Where the winter whirlwinds whistle
j All around the lots—*
Lived the slickest gal you ever
Saw in your life,
Ankle like a blue beech lever.
Voice like a -fife. *
'As I ght by her a-courtiD*, *
Calm and serene—
" With her apron she was sportin'
Checkered and clean.
'Mingled was our hash together;
All day we sat,
A chawin’ gum in wintry weather.
Happy as fat
Lonjr I- stuck to her like teasles,
' ” Summer and fall;
But shVwent off with the measles,
Ankle and all.
the retort:
Ofd’Birch, who taught a village school,
Wedded a maid of homespun habit;
He was as ttubborn ns a mule,
And she as playful as a rabbit.
Poor Kate, had scarce become a wife.
Before her husband sought to make her
The pink of country polished life,
And prim and formal as a Quaker.
One day the tutor went abroad.
And simple Kitty sadly missed him;
When'll© returned, behind her lord
Sb« slyly stole, and fondly kissed him !
The husband’s anger rose!—and red
And white bis face alternate grew!
"Less freedom, ma’am Kate sighed and said,
u Oh dear I I didn’t know '(wc r« you /”
Mbs. Partington Patriotic. —“Hurra!" said
Iko, aa he read the fact in the papers, “lucre’s
O’ llegan admitted to the Union." “A furri
ner, I shoald jedge," remarked Mrs. Parting
ton, looking very wisely at the steam that *rosc
from the teacups and formed in one cloud near
the ceiling, “but I’m glad they’ve let him come
in to enjoy our political rights and lefts and
other perogatlves. There’s room enough, and
the rear of our institutions should be extended.
I don’t believe a man should be cut off because
he wasn’t born in this country for twenty-one
years, whicli of course wasn’t any fault of his,
for everybody would be born here if they could
have their own auction consulted. “It moans,"
said Ike, "a new State.” “Well, child," re
plied she, the odds is only the difference—
States or men, His all the same. Let’em come
into our grand consternation, where the eagle
shall spread its broad opinions over’em, and
inakc’em happy in an .unlimited bondage of
brotherhood, like the Siamese twins." She had
not taken her eyes from the steam that rose
from the cups, and joined in one cloud, that
seemed to represent the Union she was depic
ting. Ike had a better illustration, for he took
the fire preserved peaches on the plate, and put
them all into one.
If is not a man’s part merely to keep his ar
mor bright: to hang around the edge of the
fight, and, whenever he secs it bulging out to
wards him, to retreat to a hill, and, if any dust
has fallen upon his armor, to set to work at
once to brush it off. It is a man’s business to
go down to the battle, and to use his sword
when he gets there, Man was not meant to be
an armor keeper p but there are men who go
all their lives scrubbing up their armor—keep
ing their hope bright and their faith bright,
but never using them. Miserable scouring
Christians.—if. TF. Beeclier,
A FXtalist.— A "western paper publishes the
following: "I knew an old man who believed
that ‘what was to be would be.’ He lived in a
region infested by very savage Indians. He
always took bis gun with him, but this time he
'found that some of his family had taken it out.
As he would not go without it, bis friends tan
talized him, by saying that there was no dan
ger of Indians; that he would not die till his
time came anyhow. ‘Yes,’ says the old fellow,
‘but suppose I was to meet an Indian, and his
time was come, it wouldn’t do not to have my
gun.’”
In the Court of Special Sessions, recently, a
man was arraigned for stealing a demijohn con
taining three gallons of whiskey. “Are you
guilty, or not guilty?” asked the clerk. “Wal,
you can tell it what you likes; I t_uk the whis
key, that I admit, and drinked it, too.” “You
took it without leave, did you not?'” “I never
wait to he asked, when that article’s around.”
A Juryman was asked, whether ho had been
charged by the-presiding Judge. l , Well," said
he, “the little fellow that sits up in the pulpit
and bosses over the crowd, gin us a leotur, but
I don’t know whether he charges anything or
not.”
“Put out your tongue a little farther,” said a
physician to a female patient; “a little farther
ma’am if you please—a little farther still."
“Why Doctor, do you think there is no end to
a woman’s tongue ?” cried the fair invalid.
Gentlemen and ladies,” said the showman,
"here you have n magnificent painting of Dan
iel in the lions den. Daniel can easily he dis
tinguished from the lions by the green cotton
umbrella under his arm.
A sensible “down east” female is decidedly
opposed to the interference of women with pol
ities. She pointedly asks ; ,“If men can’t do
the voting and take care of the country, what
is the use of them 1”
Says an Astronomer to a bright-eyed girl,
when talking of rainbows, “Did you ever see a
lunar bow, Miss?” “I have seen beaux by
moonlight, if that's what you mean,” was the
rejoinder.
There seems a chance yet of getting a cur
rent through the Atlantic cable. A genius re
marks that he don’t care a fg for their currents,
if they only give us a tew fresh dates.
“Papa,” said a precocious hoy to his father,
“why do the Puseyites burn candles ?” “Why,
Tom,” replied the matter-of-fact governor, “I
suppose they are in the dark.”
"You always lose your temper in my com
pany,” said an individual of doubtful reputa
tion to a gentleman. “True sir, and shouldn’t
wonder if I lost everything I had about me.”
A down-Eost Poet thus immortalizes the beau
tifui river Connecticut:—“Roll on, loved Con
necticut ; long hast thou ran, giving shad to
South Hadley and freedom to man !”
A Farmer, the other day, was told by bis
landlord that he was going to raise his rent
“Much obliged,” said he; “for I find it impos
sible to raise it myself.

TO THE LADIES!
A JVcw Kind of Soap.
ANEW kind of Soap has recently been invented
which promises to supersede all other kinds of
hard soap. It is used extensively for washing clothes
and possesses the remarkable property of extricating
the dirt without boiling the clothes and without the
use of the rubbing hoard. Tho process of washin"
requires less than half the time, and only about half
the labor, by using this Patent Soap. This article is
peculiarly excellent, and superior to any thing else
called Soap; because while it saves time and labor, it
never rota or injures the clothes. It is just tbo article
it is represented to be, ami never disappoints the ex
pectations of purchasers. It docs not take out stains.
