Salat Patrick’s Day. [This day (March 17) will he kept as a holi day all pver the world wherever Irishmen may be found, (and where are they not?) in honor of St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of the Green Island. Patrick-was born in Brittany near the end of the fourth century, and in his youth was carried to Ireland by some freebooters. — After spending six years in Ireland he returned home. lie studied theology at Rome and was sent at bis own request on a mission to Ireland where he had the honor of first introducing the Christian religion. • He established Churches and Schools, or dained priests, and as Bishop of Ireland, bish ops also. ■ He died at an advanced age in the year A. D. 483. The following amusing version of the Pop ular legend that Saint Patrick banished all kinds of reptiles from Ireland, was written by Mr. Henry Bennett, a Barrister of Cork, about the beginning of the present century, — En. Agitator.] ST- PATRICK WAS A GENTLEMAN. Oh! St Patrick was a gentleman, Who came of decent people; He built a church in Dublin town, And on it pat a steeple. His father was a Gallagher ; His mother was a Brady; Ilts aunt was an O’Shaughneasy, His undo an O’Grady. So, success attend St. Patrick’s fist, For he’s a salat so clever; Oh! he gave the snakes and toads a twist, And bothered them forever I The Wicklow hills are very high, And so’s the Hill of Howth sir $ But there’s a hill,, much bigger still, Mach higher nor them both sir. ’Twos on the top of this high bill St Patrick preached his sarmint That drove the frogs into the bogs, And banished all the varmint There’s not a mile in Ireland’s isle Where dirty vermin musters, But there he put tils dear fore-foot And murdered t tbem in clusters. The toads went pop, the frogs went hop Slap-dash Into the water; And the snakes committed suicide To save themselves from slaughter. Nine hundred thousand reptiles blue He charmed with sweet discourses, And dined on them at Killaloe In soups and second courses. Where blind worms crawling in the grass Disgusted all the nation, He gave them a rise, which opened their eyes To a sense of their situation. Ho wonder that those Irish lads Should be so gay and frisky, For sure St Pat he taught them that, As well as making whiskey; No wonder that the Saint himself Should understand distilling, Since his mother kept a shebeen shop la the town of Enniskillen. 0 ! was I but so fortunate As to he hack in Munster, ‘T is I’d be .bound that from that ground I never more would once stir. For their St. Patrick planted turf And plenty of the praties,' With pigs galore, ma gra, ma 'store, And cabbages—aud ladies ! Then my blessing on St, Patrick’s fist For he’s the darling saint 0! 0 ! ho gave the snakes and tends a twist; He’s a beauty without paint o'. Idle Boys. —He who is idle and vicious in school, is still more so when he leaves it. He who fires squibs will in time fire pistols. He who plays cards for sport, will if he turns not, play ere long for money. He who robs ben roosts and orchards, will probably some day rob safes and pocket books. He may i\pt do it in the way to expose himself to the penitentia ry; he may have his wits.so sharpened as to rob legally, by setting up a wild-cat bank, or betraying the confidence of his employer; or obtaining possession of property without the means of paying for it; or by getting his hand upon the public coffers, that he may fill his own, under the soft appellation of “breach of trusts I would that you could see with my eyes for a little; you would think with me, that he who when a hoy could not be trusted, cannot now when he is a man. It would not be proper for me to mention names, or I could illustrate this by numerous painful examples. But they are not necessary. Effects will follow causes; as a man bows, bo shall he reap ; boyhood is the seed-time of which manhood is the harvest. As, therefore, you love yourselves form the habit while young of employing all your time usefully. Never be unemployed. The land is full of idlers striving to live without labor. It is not to be supposed that you'are never to take recreation; this is useful, it is necessary ; but ifit comes after hard study or productive labor, it will probably be healthful and moderate. — .An honorable mind in the desire of mere relax ation, will not go forth in forms of mischievous ■ exertion. It is not supposed that a boy is to be a man, much less an old man; but in the midst of his mirth and hilarity he may be inno cent and amiable. The editor of the Logan (Ohio) Gazette hav ing been presented with a bottle of old London Bock Gin, drank it, and then attempted to write a paragraph of thanks, with this melan choly result; “In conclusion, here’s to the ‘Fire Fountain Company No* Some,’ the Brassfontaine Belle Band, and the rest of our home insutions and org’zations, including the ladies and other branches of business [hie] in and around town —town and especially the Mesident’s Pressage, Monington Washument, &c., all of which may be had cheap at the Buck—Brook—Brook and Brug Store of Binninger’s old London Dock Gin, for §2 a year, if payment is delayed until the end of the Atlantic Cable.” Against slander there is no defence. Hell cannot boast so foul a fiend; nor man deplore so foul a foe; it stabs with a sword—with a nod ■ —with a frown—with a shrug—with a look— • with # a smile. It is the pestilence walking in darkness spreading contagion' far and wide, which the most weary traveler cannot avoid ; it is the poisoned arrow, whose wound is incur able ; it is the mortal sting of the deadly adder; murder is its employmentinnocence its prey, and ruin its sport. Its foundation is envy, jealously and disappointed ambition. Its her ' aids are found in all classes, among all sects and in every vicinage ; the slanderer is vindic tive, malicious; a cowardly insinuating demon —-worse than a murderer. “Col. W. is a fine-looking man, isn’t he?” said a friend of ours the other day. “Yes,” replied another; “X was taken for him one time.” “You I why you are as ugly as sin.” “I don’t care for that; I endorsed Ws note, and was taken for him by the sheriff.” - BUSINESS DIRECTORY. ANEW kind of Soap has recently been invented which promises to supersede all other kinds of bard soap. The process of washing requires less than half the time, and only, about half the labor, by using this Patent Soap. This article is peculiarly excellent, and superior to any thing else called Soap; because while it saves time and labor, it never rots or injures the clothes. It is just the article it is represented to be, and never disappoints the ex* pectations of purchasers. It does not take out stains. Por sale at ROY’S Drug Store, Wellsboro, Pa.
