■ft 0 i the administration of the law, in
‘S be exposed its abuses, and suggested
H the principal reforms which have since
* made. That speech occupied over six
in delivery. O’Connell, Peel, Lord

tnceches; but these long ones are the excep
-7 g general rule, half an hour’s

Mce,«ns that onl y t 0 , a first-rate man.
Whoever of inferior standing, should attempt
to waste the public time by diffusiveness,
mold he coughed down or silenced by ridi
julinir cries of ‘Hear, hear.’ As for any
ujn’i reading what he may call a speech,
iliai is utterly out of the question, la the
first place, it is unparliamentary, and the mac
who attempted it would be put down with the
cries of ‘Order,’ on which the Speaker would
l„e to tell the honorable member, in the
nnllesi manner to ‘shut up.’ An extract
f rora a book may be read in a speech, or a
siarement of figures, but to read a speech
imir is impossible. Of course, then, it is
equally our of the question for a member of
jlhcr house to have an undelivered speech
jimirted as spoken, and so introduced into
the reported debates. First, written speeches
ire "holly excluded, and next, neither house

A Lesson for Girls. —An intelligent gen
sieman of fonune, says the Bangor Whig,
rated a country village in Maine, not far
from Bmgor, and was hospitably entertained'
sad lodged by a gentleman having three
daughters—two of whom in rich dresses,
fnwamed the distinguished stranger in the
parlor, while one kept herself in the kitchen,
assisting her mother in preparing food and
if,ling the table for tea, and after supper, in
doing the work until it was finally comple
ted, when she also joined her sisters in the
parlor for the remainder of the evening. The
cert morning the same daughter was again
early m rhe kitchen while the other two were
m the purler. The gentleman, like Franklin,
possessed a discriminating mind—was a close
observer of the habits of young ladies—
watched .in opportunity and whispered some
thing in the ear of the industrious ope, and
left lor a time, but revisited the family, and
in about one year the lady of the kitchen
was conveyed to Boston, the wife of the same
gentleman visitor, where she nnw presides at
an elegant mansion. The gentleman, whose
fortune she shares, she won by a judicious
deportment and well-directed industry. So
much for an industrious young lady.

Mount Pleasant, in that Stale, not long since.
“Not far from Mount Pleasant back in the

Franklin House. Mr. Franklin the proprie
tor, has two deaf and dumb daughters,
sprightly intelligent, and interesting. By
signs they often carry on animated conver.
satrons, especially with each other, and mem

“Last week two fool travelers slopped for
the ntght at this house, and after supper with
tM lamily, were shown to a room, in which
“as a good fire and bed for their accommo-

tie morning, found that the bed not been
occupied, and that his guests had flown,
“e, however found on the table money for
taeir supper, and a note staling that, in con

Notice.
TO the School Directors of Tioga and Potter
Counties: We make the following proposal.
That the President of every board of Directors
that adopts the use of Brown’s Grammar in their
respective districts, where they are not now used,
will if he wishes, be presented with a copy of said
Grammar for the use of said District, by calling at
the Book Store of Smith & Richards on Main Si.
Wellsboro, Pa.
And we will agree to furnish a sufficient number
of said Grammars to supply every School that shall
adopt them, at the Publisher’s wholesale price, ad
ding transportation, which is a mere trifle." We
feel confident that the superiority of this Grammar
over all others is such that it will recommend itself
to all who will take pains to examine it.
Call and gel a copy of the First Lines and the'
Institute, at the Bookstore of
Jan. 6,1858. SMITH Sc RICHARDS.
“An examination of the Revised Edition of Brown's Insti
tutes and Lines of Grammar) has prepared me to bestow up
on them my unqualified prelerence over any other series in
use. Wo are now using them with success, and shall contin
ue to introduce them,’'—Cuas. E. Cady, Prln. of First Ward
School, Binghamton.
“I am prepared to say without hesitation, that I consider
Goold Brown’s System, in its pre-ent revised and graduated
form, far better calculated to give students a thorough prac
tical knowledge of the scie'nce, than any other with 1 whuh
1 have become familiar. lam introducing it into myschool,
expecting my pupils will receii e more real good from it than
from any other work of the kind.’*—Z. L. Parser, Principal
Corning Union School.

The Oxygenated Bitters,
. *Jhp the care of Dyspepsia or Liver Complaint,
Asthma, Costivonesa, Loss of Appetite, Fever and Ague,
Heart Born, Water BAeh, Acidity, Sea Sickness, Scurvy,
Nausea, Headache, Ennui, and General Debility, or any di
ease having Its origin In imperfect digestion.
These Bitters, as all classes of our fellow citizens, includ
ing Members of Congress, Lawyers, Physicians, Clergymen,
Planters, Fanners and others testify, are the only safe, cer
tain and sovereign specific for the immediate relief and per
manent cure of the many cruel complaints which in some
phase or other of Dyspepsia afflict our race.
These Bitters were discovered by Dr. George B. Green,
and in their formula differ entirely from that of any other
preparation of medicine. Containing no alcohol—no miner
al—no poison—no noxious drug,—in their nature tonic, not
stimulating,—retaining their virtues in any clime; they are
a “combination and a form indeed” of Medicine which knows
no rival in exterminating disease and restoring the system
to its pristine vigor and health. No matter of how long
standing, or however induced or chronic In its character the
disease may be—no matter that it has baffled the skill of the
physician, and resisted the efforts of Afedicine, a single tria
of these Bitters will satisfy the sufferer that hia disease sil
amenable to the proper remedy.
In testimony of tho many cures effected by this Remedy
reference is had to the written certificates from distinguished
individuals known all over the land.
From among the many letters we are constantly receiving
we take the following:—
“Gentlemen:—l have used the Oxygenated Bitters in my
practice with decided success in Debility and General Pros
tration, and I confidently recommend it in cases of General
Debility or Derangement of tho Digestive Organs.
Signed, F. H. WHITE. M.D.
i/ansfield, Tioga Co. Pa., August 26,1858.”
This medicine has been used with like success by A. Ho
banl of Richmond; Miss Mary A. Sat TCP of Covington, and
Miss Catharine Beck of Liberty.

The New York Tribune.
1858-59,
—Tns New York Tribune, now more than seventeen years
old, which was the first journal in tho world that appeared
regularly on an imperial eight-page sheet at so low a price as
two cents, and which has attained tho unpafallelod aggregate
of more than 200.000 subscribers, respectfully solicits its
share of the patronage which the .Metropolitan Press is hence
forth to receive. It asks especially tho patronage and active
favor of Republicans—of those who hate all forms of oppres
sion, and desire that every rational being shall be free to em
ploy hia faculties in such innocent manner aj» he shall deem
best—of those who would extend Liberty and limit Slavety;
but it further appeals likewise to all who look and labor for
tho return of National thrift, plenty, prosperity, through tho
Protection of American Industry by wisely discriminating
duties on Imports—all who favor Nadouol Progress through
internal development and melioration rather than by exter
nal agression and extension —all who would rather have the
National resources devoted to tho construction of a railroad
to the Pacific than to the purchase or conquest of Mexico.
Nicaragua or Cuba—all who would retrench radically our
present inordinate Fed: ral expenditure* by abolishing or im
mensely reducing tho Army and Navy, and expending tho
money thus saved on works of beneficence which will endure
to bless our children—all who profoundly realize that “Right
eousness cxalteth a nation,” and that no real advantage can
ever accrue to any person or community from acquisitions or
successes achieved by means which contravene the laws of
Federal Right. Tho free allotment of limited portions of (he
Public Lands to Actual Settlers thereon, and every hopeful
plan intended to diminish tho sum of human misery from
dearth of employment or inadequate recompense-—every
scheme especially that seems to help tho unfortunate by en
abling and teaching them to help themselves—must command
our earnest sympathy and cooperation.
Wiihin the present year The Tribune has provided itself
with a uew and foster press, at a cost of SOO,(KK), merely that
some of our subscribers may receive their papers a mail ear
lier than they otherwise might do. With correspondents at
tho most important points throughout the civilized world,
and a stuff of writer* chosen from among the host in the
country, we believe that even those who dislike the politics
of our sheet concede to it frankness !iu avowing its convic
tions and ability in maintaining them. We appeal then, to

well-being of the Republic, to aid us in effecting such in
