' Bdckanak in an Aiabming Position.— A correspondent from Bedford Springs lo ihe BtUimore Sun, writes as follows : “The lady of Col. Alfred Spates, of Cum berland, Maryland, one of the visitors at the Bedford Springs, by her dashing exploits with a pair of superb horses, has created quite a sensation. Her admirable tact and skill in handling the ribbons, and managing her spirited animals, are the’theme of com mendalionwith all experts at the whip. She is the same lady who took the silver cup at a recent agricultural fair in Montgomery county for the best display of horsemanship. Her style in the saddle is queenly, and she would be the envy of the most accomplished .horsewoman at Franconi’s. She has hon ored some of our distinguished guests with an invitation lo share with her the hilarious exercises and refreshing perils of a place by her side' upon her brilliant charioteering ex cursions. The other day she sent her card to the President, who, of course, with his habitual politeness, placed himself in her charge, and the lady gave him a glorious round. Dashing through Bedford town at a spanking pace, the horses flecked with foam, the lady glowing with excitement, and the President known to everybody, very serious alarm seized the public mind that some aspiring dame had caught up the Chief Mag istrate of the United Slates, and was eloping with. him. As it was observed, however, that the President took it very calmly, called upon no one for help, and seemed perfectly resigned lo the consequences, nobody inter fered. In good time the parly returned, and the President was restored safe and sound lo his anxious friends.” The - Rock of Dakgeb. —ln a sermon lately delivered by the Rev. Joseph K. White, occurred (he following line passage : In the Straits of Sundy, between Java and Sumatra, is a small rock called theStroom Reck, the lop of which is just washed and half covered by the waves, while all around the -water is so deep that no anchor can touch the bottom. A ship was once passing through these straits, carried on by the tide, with scarce wind enough to Glibber sails. The current bore her rapidly along towards ibis rock. The danger was seen and every effort made to'guard against it. The yards were braced, but the wind no longer filled the on the ship sped to what seemed her sure destruction. The loud commands of the officers, and the willing response of the sailors were hushed, and silently each watched the rapid approaching danger. But when hope had almost turned to despair, a breath of wind fills the sails, the ship obeys her helm, the dark rock with the foaming sea around it is now seen just over ship’s side, and then at the stern and all hearts breathe free again, for God has saved the vessel and crew. In the voyage of life, in some straits through which we have passed, has no Stroom Rock lain in otfr way I—no temptation to sin seemed ready to whelm us in destruction? Have we not tried to avoid it, and felt that our strength was weakness, and almost in the depth of despair have we not cried for a breath from Heanen, and nut from the unforseen world has there not come, like the wind, an influence that has saved us ? Singular Infatuation. —-The Philadel phia Press mentions a curious circumstance connected with the loss of the Austria. The wife of Mr. Theodore Gerok, of Baltimore, is now visiting her relatives in Philadelphia, and while they have no doubt of his loss, she alone has a deep conviction that he is not dead; either he was not on board the Austria (though he wrote to her that he had actually paid for his passage,) or if he was, that ho must have been among the few who were rescued. But hete is something still more strange: It may be within the knowledge of many of our readers that a clergyman of (this city was among those who left for Europe, on the ill-fated President, and was never again heard of. His wife, who remained in Philadelphia, and was deeply attached to him, never did, because she never could, believe that he was lost to her. Eighteen years have passed away, and yet that trusting lady—we cannot speak of her as wife and she repudiates the name of widow—continues to expect his re turn. Every day a cover is placed for him at the table where still stands his accustomed chair. Every ring at the bell, we are in formed, awakens the cherished conviction of her heart that the loved one will return. A Mother s Love. —We are indebted to Lamartine’s exquisitely fine pen for the fol lowing touching and graphic illustration of a mother’s love: "In some spring freshet, a river widely washed its shores and rent away a bough, whereon a bitd had built a cottage for her summer hopes. Down the white and whirl ing stream drifted the green branch, with its wicker cup of unfledged song ; and fluttering beside it, as it went, the mother bird. Un heeding the roaring river, on she kept, her cries of agony and fear piercing the pauses of the storm. How like the love of the old fashioned mother, who followed the child she had plucked from her heart, all over the world. Swept away by passion, that might be, it mattered not; bearing away with him the fragments of the shattered roof-tree, tho’ he did, yet that mother was with him, a Ruth through all bis life, and a Rachel at his death. Condemn no man for not thinking as you think. Let every one enjoy the full and free liberty of thinking for himself. Let every man use his own judgment, since ev ery man must give an account of himself to God. Abhor every approach, in any kind of degree lo the spirit oi persecution. If \ you cannot reason or persuade a man into the truth, never attempt to force him jnto it. If love will not compel him, leave him to God, the Judge of all. —John Wesley. “Oh tor Some Quiet Spot !”—Tell me, ye winged winds, that round my pathway roar, do ye not know some quiet spot where hoops are worn no more 1 Some lone and »ilent s d*H, some island or some cave, where women can walk three abreast aloug the vil lage pave 1 The loud winds biased around rny Ace, end answered—" Nary piece.” As a deacon iA —on an extremely cold morning wW riding'by the house of his neighbor B ,The latter was chopping wood.
