    ] 11;A ! , Courageous AVoiuau.
'l'he following account of the courageous
conduct of a young lady has been communi
cated to a New Jersey pa^er: A Mr. M.
whose health was found to op unpaired by
the climate of ihe seaboard, was induced to
remove from ihechy of New. York to the
interior of Illinois, his family consisting of
his wife and three children, the oldest a
ofseyenteeo summers, and the
you^M^some- three years. Early lhai
apringln.ijnaTden Jady, friend of
the familytt.and very much attached to Mrs.
M r wild her children, removed from New
York'And took up her abode with them. She
h*d : n'ot been long in her new home before
she suddenly taken away by death.—
Mobile Mr. and Mrs. M. were attending the
funeral of Miss -W., Miss M. was left in
charge of the young child, and the room
containing the effects of the late Miss VV.
wl>ich was situated on the seconed story of
thft hoMjsp, was locked by the young lady and
(he child pu> to sleep in an adjoining room,
while Miss M. was busying herself with her
duties below. Some time afterward. Miss
M. hearing a: noise up stairs, and proceeded
to look after it hut found it sleeping quietly.
With a thought" as quick as electricity, she
concluded lint some one had entered Miss
W’s room from the outside for the purposes
of. robbing it.
Acting on this theory, she immediately
went down stairs, procured her father’s double
barrelled gun, and relumed, opening the
door of the room of theJate Miss. W. when
her expectations were fully realized in be
holding a stout man in the very act of ap
propriating a gold watch and chain, which
lie had just taken from a trunk of the late
Miss W. She ordered him to lay down the
watch, and the fellow, noticing .her deter
mined' attitude and manner, very readily
complied. She next ordered him to lake the
money fropi-bis pocket, which he extracted:
he denied having taken any, when she gave
a peremptory order, accompanied with suita
hie movements of a military nature, when
he, thinking “descreiion the better pari of
valor,” produced the money and deposited it
with the. watch. She' then gave him the
passage and orders to march which he readi
ly obeyed.
2Qa the return of her parents, measures
were taken (which proved successful) and
the fellow, after being caught was. speedily
brought lu liial, fully, indenlified convicleft
s and sentenced to the State Prison, and the
Court caused to be presented to the young
lady a testimonial in the form of a beautiful
pm, with a suitable inscription.
A short time after this, the same young
lady was at home alone as before, and her
parents nnt returning at dark, she look the
precaution to fasten Ihe outer donr. She
had not long done so when she heard a knock;
but before exposing herself to danger, she
look the precaution to provide herself with
the means of defence in the same two bar
relled gun she had used on the former occa
sion; Oh carefully opening the' door, a
strange man presented himself and inquired,
“Are you Miss M. ? She replied “Yes, what
do you want ?” He inquired again, “Are
you the young lady who had a man sent to
the Stale Prison?” She replied, “1 am.”
“Then said he, “I am his friend, and
have come to pul you out of the way,” and
drawing a long dirk knife was proceeding to
enter the door when she deliberately aimed
the gun at him, and told him if he advanced
a step he would be a dead man. She im
mediately noticed that he changed counten
ance and began to tremble; whereupon she,
pursuing her advantage, ordered him to
about face, march, while he very readily
obeyed, and as he was retreating, she gave
him a parting salute by discharging one bar
rel of her trusty companion, which unfortu,
nately only accelerated his retrogade motion.
Southern Divinitv Indignant.—We
learn from a New York paper that the Hon.
E. B. Morgan, of Cayuga county, lately
franked one of Seward’s speeches in the
Senate, to the Rev. W. W. Estill of Win
chester, South Carolina. We look upon the
act of Mr. Morgan as eminently philan
thropic,gentlemanly and Christian, and should
expect H to be so received by a Christian
divine in a Christian country,— but all the
.institutions of South Carolina are somewhat
“peculiar,” and the kind intent of Mr. Mor
gan, to enlighten the Southern preacher of
the gospel, on was not appreciated.
In duo course of .mail he received the follow
ing specimen of Christian meekness in reply :
Winchester, May 25, 1858.
Mr. Morgan :—I herewith return to you
Seward’s speech in the Senate, as I have no
use fur it, 1 believe that slavery is a social,
; moral and political blessing to the negro,
and that it is recognized by the Bible, that
inestimable gift of God to man. God has
ordained it, (as 1 believe and teach,) and
Seward~«Si &>. are doing battle against the
God of the Universe, and not merely against
the President and the South. Fight on, sir ;
every effort you make is but severing the ties
that bind the North and South together.
W. VV. Estxll.
P. S.—Send no more such documents to
the South, sir, we will not thank you for them.
The Meanest Kind of Rascality.—
The Missouri Democrat gives a new item
regarding the sale of Fort Snelling. It will
be remembered that the sale was a clandes
tine transaction, and stands revealed to the
country as a monster plunder job. The
Democrat says: “Without advertisement
or notice of any kind, 8300,000 worth of
properly was alienated from the government
and the equivalent exacted for it was 890,-
000! Ihe sale was not only clandestine,
but the was nominal. The parlies to
the contract were National Democrats ex
clusively, and after the reservation including
the Fort Was sold, some troops were detained
there, aim 810,000 a month, barrack rent,
was charged to the government by the new
proprietors. The s9o,ooo'purchase money,
or the greater part of it, has thus been dis
charged.”
Men’s Heahts.—Men’s hearts! Do wha
you will, the things won’t break. I doubt i
even they’ll chip.
Love is ownership. We own whom we
love.
Cubious PiTcii EK.-^-Prpmin ent among the
curiosities' at the' Heftldifage, ofife''the home
of Gen. Jackson, is a wooden pitcher, re
markable both on account of the. artistic
skill displayed and the celebrity of the tree
from which the wood .was procured.. .It was
made of the wood of the elm tree under
which William'Penn made the celebrated In
dian treaty. The pitcher was presented by
the coopers of Philadelphia; and, although
it is not larger than a common cream jug, it
contains seven hundred rind fifty staves. —
The hoops, lid and handle are of silver; the
bottom is a magnifying-glass, by looking
through which one is enabled to see the joints,
which are invisible to Ihe naked eye.

GARLICP’S
Improved Portable |Pield Pence.
Patented by Isaac D. Clarlick, Lyons,
Wayne Co, N. Y, t il/lliy 5, 1857
The patentee of ibis Fence, numerous trials
and experiments, has finally sucjdeeded in perfecting
a plan for the construction ofj Fence, which does
away with the necessity of inserting posts in the
ground. The above Fence is made to set upon the
natural face of the earth, and peculiar forma,
tion will conform to the undulalifcms of the ground.
The mechanical mode of its cposlruclion convinces
all who examine it of its superiority over anything
of the kind ever offered to the public, as well as of
its durability, simplicity and lt is so
put together that it is secured) jby means of keys,
which arc easily adjusted, and; battens by which it
is kept strained to the ground, jso that no trouble
need be apprehended from windsj
This fence can be built of Ipmber at $lO per
thousand, for the sum of 50 per rod—making
il by far the cheapest fence thaljcan be made; and
the ease with which il can be putiup and taken down,
moved, made into stack pensj used temporarily
for any purpose the farmer mayjrequire it—no less
than the fact that at each Joint an opening can be
made, thus obviating the necessity for bars or gates
—must render it a universal favorite with tfce farm
ing class of community. j
The Subscriber has purchasedithe territory com
