Nkw Northern State. —An excellent proposition has lately been prumulged by ibe CtncHgo Tribune, which wo opine will seri. uusly alarm ihe’slavery extensionists, as like ly to upset their schemes for further aggran dizement and the extension of slavery. The uittmition in the decision of the Supreme! Court of the United States in the Dred Scon I case, that the Missouri Compromise is uncon-1 stilui'onal carries with it consequences that I the fire caters and nullifiers have not pre- ; pared to meet, as before remarked. If that fumods compromise has no binding force, and ive will assent to democratic ideas upon that point to carry out the aruument, the or dinance of 1789 is also a nullity, and there is no valid reason why the division ,of the northwestern Territory into five States should be respected by Congress —no reason why It may not he cut up into as many sovereignties as are demanded by the political interests and commercial convenience of the people. All this 100 under the favorite democratic dogma of “Squatter Sovereignly.” In this view, that part of Michigan lying between lakes 'Michigan and Superior could readily be formed into a new State, and, indeed that plan has long been pressing upon the people who occupy that remote and important region.— Now that all legal objections have been re moved by the repeats and nullification of the ordinance referred to, it is well to agitate the matter and bring the question to an issue.— Belter now than when olher imporlant ques tions engross the attention of lhe country. — The Tribune says : Ftom all that we can gather in relation to the feeling in that part of Michigan which lies within the peninsula, there would be no serious objection to grant, mg all that is asked. They have no use for that hyperborean yegion that cannot be served by its erection into a sovereignty ; and they will ofier no resistance. If this be true, let the ball roll. The fire-eaters and nullifiers h ive removed the impediment to the scheme. Now let ns lake advantage of their, blunder. —Uric Constitution. A Rich Sccnr in Church.—One Sunday whhin ihe las* 100 years, the service had mrnmfnord m a country church a few mites from Penrith, uhm in walked a woman in o «rav cloak, accompanied by two half grown urchins, with eyes and mouth both fearfully agape, a °d the I rio took their seats in all mod. esiy near the door, By-nnd-by the clergy man gave out the text—“ Jesus I know, and Paul I know, (>tji who are ye V f The gray cloak was agitated. The text was energeti cally repeated, and the minister’s eyes seemed cast toward the parly seated behind the door. Oef friend in gray stood up, and wfh the voice of a shepherdess on the Westmoreland Foil, replied Jo the pointed question—“ Please sir, I be Patty Jones, o’ Welsleddale, an’ this is our Bv»b an’ our Pegg, an’ we’se ga’nn to Penrith*to- see our Nuncv,an* we ihowl we’d just come in an see what ve were macken, an’ git a rest.” —Carlisle Patriot. A romantic young lady fell the other day into the river, and was near drowning but succor being fortunately at hand, she was drawn out senseless and carried home. On corning to, she declared to her family that she must marry him who had saved her. “Impassible,” said her papa. “What, is he already married ?” “No.” “Wasn’t it that interesting young man, who lives here in our neighborhood ?” ‘•Dear me, no—it was a Newfoundland dng.” Wash cr I I—Uncleanliness is a breeder of sin. We care not how professedly pious n man may be, lei his bide gel crusied wrh dirt, and very soon his mind, manner and morals will become tainted. A bar of soap '\ould do more in many families towards the cause of “pure nnJ undefiled religion,” than a bundle of tracts; and if ever the heathen of our cities are brought to a knowledge of the gospel, it will be through the instrumen tality «>f cheap bithing and washing houses, as much as through fashionable churches.- So wash up! A countryman entered Whipple’s da guerreotype saloon recently, and wished a daguerreotype of his uncle. “I can do it, sir, but wh*»re is he ?” *’o, he’s dead,’* was the simple reply ; “but I’ve got a description of ftim in an old passport." “Oh, Mr. Grabbles !" exclaimed a young mother, ‘Shouldn't you like to have a family of rosy children about \our knee?" “No, ma’amj” said the disagreeable old bachelor: “I’d rather have a lot of yellow ‘boys in my pocket.” A worthy minister noted for his wit, on being asked what kind of a person the wife of Mr. was, replied, “I will give you her grammatical character. She is a noun sub stantive,—seen, felt and heard.” Thai which is past is irrevocable, and wise men have enough to do with things present und to come 1 ; therefore, they do but trifle wilh themselves that labor in past matters.— Lord Bacon. It cools (he unnatural heat and relieves pain; and in many cases of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect.
