Ashamed of it. —In the debate in the Senate upon the Treasury note bill, Mr. Pugh (Democrat) .said: “At the last session we were called upon, in a great huny, to reduce the la riff. What was the argument for' that haste ? That if we did not reduce the tariff in double quick time, there would be a surplus of $60,000,- 000 of coin in the Sub Treasuty, and it would break everybody. We have passed a , tariff bill,, but we have not only broken every body, but we have no money in the Treasury. Is this the way the financial affairs of this Government are to be conducted? You be. gin at one session to press through a bill to drive money out of the Treasury, and then come here and press us into the night hours to gel another bill to put money into the Trea sury. 1 think it is a serious impeachmetit of the financial abilities of the Democratic party; and, without meaning to be unkind to indi viduals, I am a little ashamed of it. We are precipitating the Government of the United Slates, in a time of peace, with out any excuse for it, into a system of conti nental paper money, 1 can make nothing else out of it.” Railroad Wit. — l recently took a trip West, and' while passing over the E. & 11. R. R,, being fond of “the weed,” had taken my seat in the baggage car for the purpose of indulging in a “Havana,” when a ner vous individual entered the car and commen ces overhauling the baggage. The baggage master after eyeing him a moment, accosted him with— “What’s wanting sir?” { “I’m looking for my trunk,” demurely answered the nervous man. “I will lake care of your trunk, sir—! that is my business,” retorted the baggage-j master. S i “Oh, I am aware oT that, sir, but I would always much rather keep my trunk under my tfye.” “Well, then, sir, you should have been born an elephant, and then you could, have your trunk under your eye all the time.” A Physician’s Idea op a Beautiful Wo man.—Three young gentlemen of position and cultivation, one of them a physician who had just received his medical degree, were standing on Fourth street, yesterday, when a beautiful damsel, a reigning toast, moved ma jestically and brilliantly by, and smiled very sweetly as three unexceptional “tiles” were lifted in recognition of her presence. “What a charming creature,” exclaimed one; she moves as Virgil tells us Venus did —skimming, not touching the earth !” “And her form.” said another, “it is like Hebe’s—so delicate and yet so symmetrical, and palpitating with beau iful and joyous life!” “Oh yes, her figure,” broke in the youth ful Machaon, in a glow of professional enthu siasm, “wouldn’t she make a magnificent sub ject—how I would like to dissect her!”— Cindnalli Gazette. Our old friend Bangs was invited by a friend to his house to partake of a julep, of of which he was very fond, ft was handed to,him in a silver golilei lined gold. After sipping a portion, B. turned to his host, and remarked that it was astonishing what an addition a strawberry gave to the flavor of a julep. His friend replied that he was vei;y sorry that he did not have a strawberry to put in it. “But,” said 8., “there is certainly one in this.” Upon his host’s asserting the contrary, he insisted that he saw it distinctly, and drained the goblet to get the berry—when lo and be hold, he found that it was only the reflection of bis own nose ! At a debating society in Schenectady, the other day the subject was : “Which is the most beautiful production, a girl or a straw berry 1” After continuing the argument for two nights the meeting finally adjourned without csming to a conclusion—the old ones going for the strawberries, and the young ones for the girls. Rural Money-Lender. —“You want a hundred dollars! BUCHU LEAVES are procured from the sooth, era part of Africa. The Hottentots at the cape of Good Hope have long used this article as a remedy in a variety of diseases. From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by .their recommend, alion it was soon employed in Europe. In ptocess of time Ibis medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken of by the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, such as gravel, a morbid irrila. tion of the bladder and urethra, retention of urine, also incontinence of urine from want of tone in the urinary organs. It cools the unnatural heal and relieves pain; and in many cases of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect. The active princi. pie of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process ol boiling. Hence it requires great care and skilful management to prepare this medicine properly, ; FLUID EXTRACT OF BUCHU is a strong or concentrated preparation prepared by the new process called ‘ Displacemenl.” By this the valua ble properties of the Buchu are entirely preserved, and this form of the medicine is less liable to injury from age and more palaleable.
