Tlje Baltimore Oriole. From tha singularity of ihe nest of this species, from its brilliant cofoi and its pre ferring the apple trees, weeping willows, wal nut and tulip trees to build on, it is generally known and is, as usual, honored with u vari ety of names, such as bang-nest, hanging bird, golden robin, (ire-bird, &c., but more generally the Baltimore bird. Few of the American orioles equal this in the construc tion of their neats ; he gives them, in a su perior degree, warmth, convenience and se curity. lie generally fixes on the high bend ing extremities of the branches, fastening strong strings of hemp or flax round two forked twigs; with Ihe same materials he fabricates a strong, firm kind of cloth, not unlike the substance of a hat in its raw state, forms it into a pouch six or eight inches in depth, lining it substantially with soft sub stances well interwoven with the outward net ting, and lastly finishes wi'h a layer of horse hair—the whole being shaded from (he sun and rain by a natural pent-house, or cdpopy of leaves. The birds of ibis species have all a com mon form of building, bul they do not build in exactly the same manner. Great differ rence will be iound in the style, nearness in in finishing the nest. Some are far superior workmen to others. So solicitous is the Bal timore to procure proper materials for his nest, that the women in must narrowly watch the thread that 1 may be blea ching: and the farmer must secure his grabs as this bird will curry off the former and the airings that lie the latter, to serve his purpo se in building. The principal food of the Baltimore con sists of beetles, caterpillars, and bugs—par ticularly one of a brilliant, gl >ssy green. Iv. ! ROE’s, Report of the Committee appointed to tvperinterfd the Burning of the Iron Safes, at Reading , Feb. 27, 1857. I u Thc undersigned, members,of the committee, do respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi nally agreed upon by Parrels & Herring and Evans &. Watson, placed side -by side jin a furnace, viz: The Safe in use by the Paymaster of the Philadel phia and Reading Railroad Company, Tn his office at Reading, manufactured by parrels & Herring, and the safe in use by H. A. Lantz, in his store, manufactured by Evans & Watson, and put in books and papers precisely alike. I \ Tho fire was started at 'o’clocbf-A. M., and kept up until four cords of greeti hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut lop jvood were entirely consumed, the whole under the ■■superintendence of the subscribers, members ofjlb'e Committee. The Safes were then cooled off witit water, after which they were opened and the books and papers taken out by the Committee and sent to H. A.' Lanlz's store for public examination, after they were first examined and marked by Hhp Committee. The books and papers taken fromllbe Safe manufactured by Evans & Watson were bptjslightly affected fay the intense heat, while those taken from Ibe Safe manufactured by Parrels &i Herring, were in our judgment, damaged folly fifteen per cent more than (hose taken from Evans & Wasson’s Safe. We believe the above to have been a fair and im partial trial of the respective qualities of both Safes. JACOBiH. DYSHER, DANjEL S. HUNTER, Having been absent during the burning, we fully coincide with the above statement of the condition of the papers and books taken out of their respective Safes. G. A. NICHOLLS, H. H.
