Novel Mistake. —A correspondent of the 1
Journal of Commerce stales that the first
tract of the American Tract Society was
published at Andover, Mass. The writer
relates un anecdote of an Andover man, who
so far misunderstood the Society, as to be
lieve it to be a Tract Society, whose object
it was to track thieves, and to bring them to
justice! He highly commended this idea of
the Society, and thought it was a good thing.
This verdant citizen of Andover probably
little thought that .any religious society would,
by ils action make it a greater crime to dance
with a woman than to sell one by auction-'
—publishing tracts against the “sin of danc
<pg," and abstaining from uttering its pro
test against the traffic in human flesh by
American Christians.
A Good Substitute for a Sermon. —
The Mew Orleans Picayune tells a story of
an old clergyman who was in the habit as
Bonn as he got into the pulpit, of placing his
aermon in a crevice under im cushion, where
he left it during the singing of the accus
tomed psalm. One Sunday he pushed the
sermon book 100 far into the crevice nod lost
it. When the psalm was concluded he called
the clerk to bring him a Bible. The clerk,
somewhat astonished at this unusual request
brought him a Bible as he was desired. The
clergyman opened it and thus addressed his
congregation, “My brethren, I have lost my
sermon ; bill I will read you a chapter in
Job worth ten of it."
A Good Bible Student. —The Dimme
erais ol Chicago held a grand rally on the
nighl before ihe lale election in lhal city, and
so did the Republicans. As a distinguished
leader of the former party was holding lorth
in eloquent terms, he was interrupted by the
loud cheers ol (he Republican meeting which
was near at hand. Pausing utuil it was still
again, the Captain gave vent to his injured
feelings in Ihe following glowing sentence :
••Fellow-citizens, you heard them men shout
ing. Ctssar had a great feast onre and a
great meeting. There weie revelling and
shouting then notwithstanding the hand-writ
ing on the wall /'•
A Frenchman who had deposited a sum
of money for safe keeping, with a friend,
hearing the latter was about to fail, calling
upon the man said,
“Sare, 1 want my mnnie.”
•‘Certainly sir,” replied the other, draw
ing out his book, when the Frenchmaji said,
“Stop, sare, yen got de monie'!’’ ;
‘•Why of course!" said his friend, “I
will give ynu a check for it immed.alely.”
, “No, no” said the Frenchman, “if you
got de monie I no want him, but if you no
got him den I wants him.”
“Forms of Prayer” are only valuable to
those who have not a ready flow of words.
The Chicago merchant, who whs called upon
to “say grace” at the table of his brother-in
law, a minister, does not come under this
category. Said he with fervor and reverence,
“O God! we thank thee for'his food—we
thunk thee—wc thank thee. Yours respect
fully. Amen.”

aud the safe in use‘by H. A. Lanlz,in hia store,
manufactured by Evans Sc Watson, and put in books
and papers precisely alike. [
The fire was started at &h (o’clock, *K. M. f and
kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords
dry oak and half chestnut lop wood were entirely
consumed, the whole under of
the subscribers, members ofithe Committee. The
Safes were then cooled off witli water, after which
they were opened and the and papers taken
out by the Committee and sept to U. A. Lautz’s
store for public examination, after they were first
examined and marked by ,the Committee. The
books and papers taken fromjlhfe Safe manufactured
by Evans 6c Watson were but (slightly affected by
the intense heat, while those taken from the Safe
manufactured by Farrels & Herring, were in our
judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than
those taken from Evans Sc Watson's Safe.
Wc believe the above to have been a fair and im
partial trial of the respective qualities of both Safes.
JACOB H.DYSHER,
Daniel s. hunter.
Having been absent during the burning, we fully
coincide .with the above statement of the condition
of (he papers and books taken out of their respective
Safes. G. A. NICHOLLS,
