Truth is Mighty and must Prenail. \ Report of the Committee appointed to. superintend 1 the Burring of the Iron £»afee t at Feb . ! 27,1857. j I “The undersigned, members of the committee, do respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi-t naliy agreed upon by Farrels[& Herring and Evans ! Sc Watson, placed side by side in a furnace, viz:! The Safe in use by the Paymaster of the Pbiladek ! pliia and Reading Railroad Company, in his office 1 at Reading, manufactured by Parrels Sc Herring, and the safe inuse by H. A. Lanlz, in his store,; manufactured by Evans & Watson, and pul in books | and papers precisely alike, j j The fire was started at o’clock, A. M.,and kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut top wood were entirely consumed, the whole under (the superintendence of the subscribers, members of the Committee. The Safes were then cooled off with water, after which they were opened and the books and papers taken out by the Committee andj sent to H. A. Lantz’s store for public examination', after they were first examined and marked byi the Committee. The books and papers taken from the Safe manufactured by Evans Sc Watson were but slightly affected by the intense heat, while those taken from the Sate manufactured by Parrels & Herring, were in our \ judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than those taken from Evans Sc Watson's Safe. We believe the above to have been a fair and im partial trial of the respective qualities of both Safes. JACOB H. DYSHER, Daniels, hunter. In considering the advantages of emigrating to this locality the following are presented^ Fir ft —The soil is a J rich limestone, capable of raising the heaviest crops, owing to which this settlement has attained i tepreson t great prosperity.) Jf .Second—lt is the centre erf the great North TVeat Coal Ba- is destined soon-to become one of tho greatest busi ness places in the State. It will supply the great Lake mar ket. (according to population and travel the greatest in the Union.) It has five workable veins of the best Bituminous Coal’ amounting in the ngrpgate to over 22 feet, which makes ~000 tons of coal under each acre. This will make the land of inestemable value. I Tho eminent state geologist Dr. Chas.T. Jackson of Boston, has made a geologucal survey of the land, and analysed the coal, the iron ore and the'limestone. This report together with maps will be furnished to inquirers. Third —Three railroads are laid out through this property. The Snnlmry and Eric Railroad'gives us a market for our coal to the lakes—it runs from (Erie to Philadelphia. A large port of this road has been finished, and is now in running order. A hoary force is doit working from Eric towards pur land in the western direction, the'moans for the completion of which has been raised—it will soon be finished. The Allegheny Valley Railroad connects ns with Mow York, Boston and i'Uts- Venango Road connects us with the V est. It is not like going to the backwoods of the West, among perhaps intblerantpeoplc, when; there is no so ciety, churches, or schools, w hero the price of land is high, and whore tho emigrant, niter being used to the henlthiestcli juate in tho world, has to[cndurc sickness and pain, and per haps ruins his health and that of his family. Bat here is a thriving settlement having three towns, containing churches, schools, hotels, stores, saw mills, grist mills, and everything desired. There is a cash [market at hand. The lumber trade last year amounted to over two hundred million feet of lum ber. In a short time, ovying to the coal, it will -become still more valuable. as a number of iron works and manufactories will soon be started; they are at present starting them ex tensively at Warren. Even for those who do not wish to go there, the payments are [such that they can easily buy a farm to save their rising families from want in the future, or to gain a competence, by thlc rise which will take place in the value of lands.
