Report of ihe Committee appointed to superintend ,
the Burning of the Iron Safes, at Reading, Feb.
27,1857. !
“The undersigned, members of the committee, do
respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origj.
nally agreed upon by Parrels &. Herring and Evans
Sc Watson; placed side by side in a furnace, viz: I
The Safe in use by the Paymaster! of the Philadel
phia and Reading Railroad Company, in his office
at Reading, manufactured by Farrels Sc Herring,
and the safe in use by H. A. Lalnlz, in his store,
manufactured by Evans Sc Watson, and put in books
and papers precisely alike. i
The fire was started at 8£ o'clock, A. M., and
kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords
dry oak and half chestnut lop wood were entirely
consumed, the whole under the superintendence of
the subscribers, members of the Committee. The
Safes were then cooled off with water, aftCf^which
they were opened and the books and papers taken
out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Lanlz’s
store for public examination, alter they were first
examined and marked by the ;Coromittee. The
books and papers taken from the Safe manufactured
by Evans Sc Watson, were but slightly affected by
lue intense heat, while those taken from the Safe
manufactured by Farrels & Herring, were in our
judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than
those taken from Evans & Watson’s Safe. .
We believe the above to have been a fair amfr im
partial trial of the respective qualities of both Safes.

TO THOSE WHO WANT FARMS
A FAItiTI WITHIN THE REACH
OF EVERY: MAN.
TI7K JinXrMAV IARJI COJIPA.vf has made arrange
ments by which all who desire to settle or purchase a home
can do so, j
The Farms consist of the best limestone soil of the' most
.-upenor quality for farming, In'a [rapidly improving place,
into which an extensive emigration is now pouring. The
property is located in Elk County, Pennsylvania, in the midst
of u thriving population of some lff,CfOO. The climate is per
fectly healthy, and the terrible plqgpe of the west fever is
unknown. It also has an nlmudaulu uf the best-quality of
Coal and Iron. The price to buy Itjout is from $3 to $2O per
acre, payable by instalments, to be.located at tho tune ot pur
chasing, or a share of 25 acres entitling to locate the samefor
$3OO, payable $6 per mouth or Acres payable $4 per
month. . Discount for every anra of $lOO and under, paid in
advance, a discount of 5 per cent/ will be allowed, and for
over $lOO a discounter 10 per ceuti
In considering oE emigrating to this locality
tho following are presented:
First— I The toil is a rich Umestqne, capable of raising the
heaviest crops, owing to which this settlement has attained
its present great prosperity. I
Second-*- It is the centre of the great North. West CoqJ Ba
sin, and is destined soon to become one of tbi? greatest busi
ness places in the State. It will supply the great Lake mar
ket, (according to population and travel the greatest in the
Union,) It hits fire-workable vein's of the beat Bituminous
Coal’ amounting in the agregato to over 22 feet, which makes
22,000 tons of coal under each acre. This will make the land
-of inestcinftble value. |
The eminent state geologist Drl Chns.T. Jackson of Boston,
has made ft gcologucal survey of the land, and analysed tho
coal, tho iron ore and tho limestone. This report together
with maps will be furnished to inquirers.
27u>t/—' Three railroads are laid taut through this property.
The Snnbury and Erie Railroad gives us a market for our coal
to the lakes—it runs from Elio to Philadelphia. A large part
of this road Los been finished.‘fluid is now in running order.
A heavy force is now working from. Erie towards our hind in
the western direction, the means [for the completion of which
has boon raised—it will soon •be finished. The Alleghany
\alley Uailroad connects ns v (thj New Y ork, Boston and Pitts
burg. The Venango Hoad connects us with the West.
There are already good Turnpike Roads running through
this property, various other rcyidi have been opened to accom
mo dote the emigration and settlement Which bus already ta
ken place. i \
There is no opportunity equal to it now offered to tho man
who wants to provide himself home In an easy way, and
make a settlement where he chnllivc in prosperity and inde
pendence in a climate PERFECTLY HEALTHY,
No ease of the fever ever having been known to occur In :
this settlement. It is not like giung to the backwoods of the
V among perhaps intolerant) people, where there is no so
ciety, churches, or schools, where the price of land is high,
and where the emigrant, after being used to the healthiest cli
mate in the world, has to endure sickness aud pain, and per
haps ruins his health and that of his family* But here is a
thriving settlement having thrc£ towns, containing churches,
schools, hotels, stores, saw millij, grist mills, and everything
desired. There ia a cash market at hand. The lumber trade
last year amounted to over two hundred million feet of lum
ber. In a short time, owing to the coal, it will become still
more valuable, os a number nf iron works and manufactories
will soon ho started; they are at present starting them ex
tensively at barren. Even forjthose who do not wish to go
there, the payments are such that they can easily buy a farm
to save their rising families froin want in tho future, or tf>
gain a competence by the rise which will take place in thfi
value of Linds. By an outlay scarcely missed, a substantial
provision can bo made, ; j
Persons should make early application, apply or write toE.
