Report of the Committee appointed to superintend
the Burning of the hon Safes y at Reading , Feb.
27, 1857.
"The undersigned, members of the committee, do
respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi.
nally agreed upon by Parrels & Herring and Evans
& Watson, placed side by side in a furnace, viz:
The Safe in the Paymaster of the Philadel
phia and Reading Railroad Company, in his office
at Reading, manufactured by Farrels & Herring,
and the* safe in nse by H. A. Lantz, in his store,
manufactured by Evans & Watson, and put in books
and papers'precisely alike.
The fire was started at 8J o'clock, A. M., and
kept up until four cords of.grcen hickory, two cords
dry oak and half chestnut jLpp wood were entirely
consumed', the whole under the superintendence of
the subscribers, members of the Committee. The
Safes were then cooled off with water, after which
they were opened and the books and papers taken
out bv the Committee and sent to H. A. Laniz's
store for public examination, after they word first
examined and marked by the Committee. The
books and papers taken from the Safe manufactured
by Evans & Watson were but slightly affected by
the intense licat, while those taken from the Safe
manufactured by Farrels & Herring, were in our
judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than
those taken from Evans &. Watson's Safe.
We believe the above to have been a fair and im
partial trial of the respective qualities of both Safes.

The Farms consist of the best limestone soil of the
superior quality for farming, in a rapidly improving place,
into which an extensive emigration is .now pouring. The
property is located in Elk County, Ponnayl>ania, Inlhemidst
of a thriving population of some 10,000. The climate is per
fectly healthy, and the terrible plague of the west fever Is
unknown. It also bps an abundance of the best qnality of
Coal and Iron. The price (o buy it out is from to £2O per
acre, payable by instalments, to be located at the time of pur
chasing, or a share of 2o acres entitling to locate the tame for
s3oo,payable $6 per month or 12)^ acres* payable $4 per
month. * Discount for every sum of $lOO ami under, paid m
advance, a discount of 5 per cent, will bo allowed, ami for
over TfclW) a discount of 10 per cent. _
In considering the advantages of emigrating to tins locality
the following arc presented: . .
First —The soil is a rich limestone, capable of raising the
heaviest crops, owing to which this settlement bus attained
its present gmit prosperity.
Second —3 Cis the centre of the great North West Coal Ba
sin, and is destined soon to become one of the greatest busi
ness places in the State. It will supply the great Lake mar
ket, (according to population ami travel the greatest in the
Union.) It bos five Workable veins of the best Bituminous
Coal’ amounting in the egregute to over 22 foot, which makes
22,1)00 tons of coal nndcr.each acre. This will make the laud
of Intartemable value.
The eminent state geologist Dr-Chas.T. Jackson ofßoston,
baa made a geologucal surveyor the laud, and analysed’tho
coal, the iron ore and the limestone. This report together
with maps will be iumbhed to inquirers.
JVfirtf—-Three railroads aro laid but through this property.
The Suubury and Erie Railroad gives usu market for our coal
do the lakes—it runs from Erie to Philadelphia. A largo part
of this road has been finished, and is now in running order,
A heavy force is now working from Erie towards our land in
the western direction, the means for the completion of which
has been raised—-it will soon he finished. Tbo Alleghany
Valley Railroad connects us with New York,Boston and Pitts
burg. The Venango Road connects us with the Went.
There are already good Turnpike Roads running through
this property, various other ro.uls have been opened to accom
modate the emigration and settlement which has already ta
ken place.
There is no opportunity equal to it now offered to tho man
who wants to provide himself a home in an easy way, and
make a settlement where he can live in prosperity and inde
pendence in a climate PERFECTLY HEALTHY.
No case of tho fever ever having been known to occur in
this settlement. It is not like going to tho backwoods of the
West, among perhaps intolerant people, where there is no so
ciety, churches, or schools, where the price of land is high,
and where tho emigrant, after boing used to the healthiest cli
mate in the world, bus to ondme sickness and pain, and per
haps ruins bis health and that of his family. But here is a
thriving bcttlemeut having three towns, containing churches,
schools, hotels, stores, saw mills, grist mills, and everything
desired. There is a cash market at hand. The lumber trade
last year.amounted to over two hundred million feet of lum
ber. In a short time, owing to the coal, it will become still
more valuable, os a number of iron works and manufactories
will soon be started; they are at present starting them ex
tensively at Warren. Even for those who do not wish to go
there, the payments are such that they can easily buy a farm
to save their rising families from want in tho future, or to
pain a competence by the rise which will take place in the
value of lands. By an outlay scarcely missed, a substantial
provision can be made.
