Lorenzo Dow, Tailed to make its appearance
at (hb appointed time. The snow is melting
gradually and notwithstanding tfierarn which
has fallen, promises no more than an average
flood. Will some of our spiritual friends be
kind enough to inquire at Ihejr next ‘sitting’
for the eccentric divine, and ascertain if (here
bos not been a mistake as to the date.
***ln another column will be found the
new Liquor Bill, which we hope will be read
by all- Judging from the noise and rowdyism
we encountered while ‘around town’ on Mon
day afternoon, We concluded that sdnya .one
bad license. Such .manifestations of "old
limss” are becoming 'rare, being chiefly con
fined to the 4th of July, on which occasion
it has oeen the public duty of a number of
citizens to become “inspired,” We hope
these exhibitions may become still more rare.
*•* .We observe that a number of individ
uals. not having (he fear of the law before
their eyes, are unable to distinguish the dif
ference between a shade tree and a hitching
post. *Many beautiful trees have been de
stroyed in various parts of the village by the
carqlesness of persons hitching horses to
them and allowing them to gnaw away the
bark. There are a large number of trees
unprotected by boxes, which by the exercise
of a little care on the part of teamsters, and
a little outlay by the owners, would soon be
come an ornament to the village.
# » # WBi\e around on Tuesday evening last
we were delighted at hearing (he sweet song
ol a pair of nightingales. Though sylvan
in their habits, these birds sang as sweetly in
s second story window as if in their native
groves. After singing a short time, they were
frightened by a company of rude young men
with a guitar.
*** Look out for spurious quarter eagles,
which have made their appearance in the cities.
They are dated 1854, and in point of execu
tion are calculated to deceive, though in col
or they are as light as brass, as well as de
ficient in weight. The various shades of col
or of the genuine coin will assist in the pass
ing of the spurious, but when compared with
me genuine the difference in weight is easily
perceived. An examination and comparison
will cost but little trouble, while it may pre
vent considerable iosl
*** The Western level is begining to man
liest itself in <his village as it usually does
every spring. A number of young men de
sign starling soon and a few have already
gone We cannot comprehend the motive
that induces our young men as soon ss they
gel started in business to pull up slakes and
go west; that it is some great ‘shakes’ we
all admii, but it offers no greaier rewards for
voung men of industry and integrity than
cao be found at home. A large number
oi our voung men will be taken down (he
river when the flood comes, but we ace pleased
to learn that among the latter class are a
lew individuals whom we hope will have a
cnance (or once in their lives to become use
ful as well as ornaments’.
*** We were hugely startled by the sharp
application of quite a ‘lengthy Seapp’ m the
Eagle of last week. We confess to being
around. |ipoo <he occasion of the Jit, and to
being remiss to our duty, in not giving the
affair in full. We humbly beg. pardon of
ins Eagle't correspondent in not noticing his
august presence, we presumed that!he public
were aware of the locality in which he loves
to congregate. We also admire his wisdom
in attributing it to “mental excitement,” he is
certainty a man of great attainments in pro
nouncing so speedily upon an effect resulting
trom a cause with which he has had no per
sonal experience. We have been furnished
with tne copy of the AgitaXor found in the
damsel's grasp, and find the matter to be per
lectiy clear, it was the number containing the
reprint of the Eagle's celebrated somerset on
hie Nebraska question. She was evidently
trying to follow the Col. from one side of the
fence to the other but missed a rail and
"went in. r
