How much we dislike to read So sad
an announcement in the advertising de
partment of the papers. isfot a house
and grounds only, but all the long,
cheering memories and tender associa
tions of the place that enrich it with a
wealth beyond the computation of busi
ness men, the traders in homestead and
other classes of real estate. It is a sor
ry day for a Man, and the more so for a
family, when he is obliged to give up
his home 14 go drifting again over the
world. No experience like this shocks
the sensitive heart. All gone, all de
serted. The lights shining no more in
the window. The fatniliar faces no
longer pressed against the panes. The
fires dead and gone out. The smoke
no more curling from the chimneys.
The dear voices will not be heard there
again, though the man pass and repass
the house daily. Ah ! there is indeed no
dissolation of a sort like this. He must be
a hard and undeveloped nature thtt can
contemplate such a one without the
deepest emotion. To lose one's home
is to lose nearly all that earth has to of
fer of happiness to man.
The Ten Friends.
"I wish I had good friends to help me on
in life," cried lazy Dennis with a yawn.
"Good friends ! why, you've ten," replied
his neighbor.
"I'm sure I've not half so many, and
those that I have are too poor to help me."
"Count your fingers, my boy," said the
neighbor.
Dennis looked down on his big, strong

"Count thumbs and all," added the neigh-
bor.

lumping is that of a soldier who had
ost one of his eyes in battle, and was
discharged from the serviee. Shortly
after he entered into partnership with a
substitute broker in Boston, who fur
trished him with a very neat glass - eye
and enlisted him, and he was sent to
the army. There he soon lost his eye
again, or rather removed it and put it
into his pocket
. and obtained his dis
charge. This process he several times
'repeated, and when unable to get his
discharge, deserted. Unfortunately
thirteen proved an unlucky number for
him, and the trick being discovered, he
was tried and sentenced to be shot

has done its worst and enters matr illicitly, his marriage
is unfruitful, and his seise tells him that this is caused
by his early follies.

Let no false modesty prevent you from explaining
