    National Economy.
A skilful I writer has made a
careful calcidation that this nation could
lureslsoo,ooo,ooo, merely by a slight
Ardestlion its daily expenditures,
whiek it would hardly feel—so Jaen is
the scale of livinghere. This five
hundred millions, which is now mainly
wasted in luxuries and extravagancies,.
would, if saved, ge into permanent in
vestments to feed laborers, and add to
the taxable wealth of the country and
into government loans. Eachindivid
ual, it is true, would depesit his savings
in bank, or invest it in railroad secnri ,
ties, or make permanent improvements
with it, but in all these cases, it would
help the government and the people to
bear the burden of the 'war. Gold
would come down under such economy,
and gove?nment credit rise.
• • Epilepsy.
A new method of treating epilepsy
has been suggested in a pamphlet by
Dr. Chapman, we believe the former
uublisher in London of many American
iooks, founded on the discovery that
here is a system of yaw-motor nerves,
Ad that by exciting these nerves (4noby
, alvanism) the arteries are made to con
iinct, and by diminishing the influence
of these nerves the arteries- dilate, as
those of the face do after a section of the
cervical. sympathetic. Dr. C. stimulated
and depressed the sympathetic and cere
bro-spinal nervous systems at will by
applying heat or ice india-rubber bags,
to the back of the head and the different
ganglia of nervous centers, and gives a
very extraordinary account ot the suc
cess he has had in this way with the
worst cases of epilepsy, and some of
paralysis.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THESE DISEASES
very frequently? There is the secret—solitary self
abuse, practiced by thousands. Commenced when
boys, at school or elsewhere, it is kept up even during
young manhood, producing mental and Physical pros

ness are the result. If the victim be conscious of the
cause of his decay, and quit it, he suffers under those
terrible nocturnal and involuntary emissions which
weaken and shame hint, till life becomes grievous.—
Thus place between certain decay and premature
death and horrible suffering, the wretched victim rush
