Why is it that in nioety-nine C&SOR

(doubbloss fot many reasons a sad

out the most fascinating and super

ninety-nine cases ont of a hundred,
the boy who is educated solely by
his molder, becomes a triumphant
and sucCessfut man in after life?—
Perhaps the opposite influence of
either sex is beneficial to the other;
perhaps the girl derives vigorous
thoughts, expanding views, habits of
reflection—nay. more—charity and
forbearanee, from her male associa

mother's tuition and his mother's
companionship for the gentleness
and pu,4 1 4 of heart which combine
so :e11: with a manly and generous
nature, for the refinement and deli

courage; above all, for that exalted
stodnyd of woman-kind, which

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of
the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge.
Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent
Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredi
ents and effects ; I yet knOw of no sufficient reasons
why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes
himself to have received front any simple preparation,
in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit
of culicrs.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofland's
German Bitters, prepared by Dr. U. M Jackson, of this
city, because I was prejudiced against them for many
years, under the impression that they were chiefly an .
alcoholic mixture. lam indebted to my friend, Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal if this prejudice by
proper tests, and Mr encouragement to try them, when
suffering from great and long continued 4.1,114. The
use of three bottles of these Bitters. at the beginning of
the present year, was followed by evident relief, and
restoration to a degree of bodily and mental vigor
which I had not felt for six months before, and had
almost despaired of regaining. I therefere thaok God
and my friend for directing me to the use of them.

PIIPLHI►DVLI, A ugust 23rd, 1862.
Messrs. Jones 4. Evans:—Well gentlemen, your
Hoolland's Hermaat Bitters have saved my life.—
There is nn mistake in this. It is vouched for lay
numbers of my comrades, some of whose names are
appended, and who were fully cognizant of all the
circumstances of my case. I am, and have been for
the last four years, a weather of She:mates retebrayed
battery, and under the immediate command of Capt.
EL B. Ayers. Through the exposure attendant upon
my arduous duties, I was attacked in November last
with indentation of the lungs. and was for seventy
two days in the hospital. This was It by great
debility, heightened by an attack of dysentery. I was
then removed from the White House, and sent to this
city on hoard the Steamer "State of Maine," from
which I landed on the 28th of June. Since that time
I have been about as low as any one could be and
yeironiain a spark of vitality. For a week or more I
was s curcely able to swallow ailything, and if I did
force a morsel down, it With immediately thrown up
again.
I could not even keep a glass of water on my atom
ach. Life could not last under these circumstances ;
and, accordipgly, the physicians a ho had beep work.
ing faithfully, though tinsuct.essfullv. to relicue me
from the grasp of the dread Archer, frankly told me
they could do no more for me, and advised MC to see
a clerg3 man, and to make such disposition of niy
ited Muds as best suited me. Au acquaintance who
visited toe at the hospital, Mr. Frederick Steinbron,
diStli below Arch direct, advised me, as a forlorn
live, to try your Bitters, and kindly procured a bottle.
From the time I commenced taking theta the gloomy
shadow of death receded, and I ant now, thank God
for it, getting better. Though I have taken but two
bottles, I have gained ten pounds, and I feel sanguine
of being permitted to rejoin my wife and daughter
from whom I have heard nothingfor eighteen mouths:
for. gentlemen, I am a loyal Virginian, from the vi.
dimity of Front Royal. Fo your invaluable Bitter• I
owe the certainty of life which has taken the plan e of
vague fears—to your Bitters will I owe the glorious
privilege of again clasping to niy bosom those who are
dearest to me in life. Very truly Yours,
ISAAC MALONE.
We fully concur in the truth of the above statement
as we had despaired of seeing our comrade, Mr. lida
