to see in the. papers fewer accounts
of big pigs, and more fat sheep.

human life. There are dear friends,
perhaps, who are stricken with grief
when a loved one is taken; and for
many days the grave is watered
with tears of anguish. But by and

thelast droop oozes out; the stern
gates of forgetfulness fold back upon
the exhausted spring; and Time, the
blessing healer of sorrow, walks
Over the closed sepulcher without
walking a single echo by his foot

Induced by the extensive sale and universal popular

If you do, us. 1100FLANll'e GERMAN BITTERS
From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of
tke Eneyelopedia of Religious Knowledge.
Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent
Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredi
ents and
_effects; 1 yet know of no sufficient reasons
why a man may not testify to tie benefits lie believes
himself to have received from any simple preparation,
in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit
of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofland's
German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. Jackson, of this
city, because I was prejudiced against them for many
years, under the impression that they were chiefly an
alcoholic mixture. 2am indebted to my friend, Robert
Shoemaker, Esq.. for the removal if this prejudice by
proper tests, and for encouragement to Ire them, when
suffering from great and long continued debility. The
use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of
the present year, was followed by evident relief, and
restoration to a degree of bodily arid mental vigor
which I haul not felt for six mouths before, and had
almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thaok God
and my friend for directing we to the use of them.
Phila., June 22,, ill. J. N. BROWN.
PARTICULAR NOTICE.

Bitters, put up in quart bottles, compounded of the
cheapest whiskey or common rum, costing from `in to
40 cents per gallon, the taste disguised by Anise or Co
riander Seed
This clues of Bitters has caused and wilt continue to
cause. as long us they can be told, hundreds to die the
death of the drunkard. By their use the system is kept
continually under the influence of Alcoholic Stimu

have all flue virtues of 1100 F LAND'S BlTTans in con
nection with a good article of Liquor, at a much less
price titan these inferior preparations wial cost you.
Attention, Soldiers !
AND THE FRIENDS OF SOLDIERS
We call the attention of all having friends in the
army to tire fact that "1100 FLA ND'S Gorman Bit
ters" will cure nine-tenths of the diseases inditt,d by
exposures and privations incident to carol. lire. In the
lists, published almost daily in the newspapers. on the
arrival of the sick, it w ill be noticed that a ver,t large
proportion are suffering front debility. Every care or
that kind can be readily cured by thottland's German
Bitters Diseases resulting front disorders of the di
gestive organs are speedly removed. We have no
hesitation In statint , that, if these Bitters were freely
used among our soldiers, hundreds of lives might be
saved that otherwise will be lost.
We call particular attention to the following re
markable and well authenticated cure of one of the
nation's heroes, whose .ife, to use his own language,
"has been sac ed h) the Bitters."
PIIPLHIADVLI, A ugust 2:11 . 41, 1862.
Messrs. Jones 4- Evans:—Well gentlemen, your
Hoodand's German Bitters have saved my life.—
There is no mistake in this. It is vouched for by
numbers of my comrades, sonic of whose names are
appended, and who were fully cognizant of all the
circumstances of my ease. I am, and have been for
the last four years, a member of Sherman's celebrated
battery, and under the immediate command of Capt.
1.1. Ayers. Through the exposure attendant upon
myaro ions duties,l was attacked in November last
with intismatiiin of the lungs. and was tor seventy
two days in the hospital. This was followed by great
debility, heightened by an attack old} sentery. I was
then removed from the White House, and sent to this
city on hoard the Steamer "State of Maine," front
which I landed on the i2sth of June. Since that time
I hate been about as low as any one cihibl be and
yetcontain a spark of vitality. For a week or more I
was s merely able to swallow anything, and if I did
force a morsel down, it was immediately thrown up
again.
I could not even keep.a glass of water on my stain
ach. Life could not last under these circumstances ;
and, accordingly, the physicians who had been work
Mg faithfully, though unsucbessfully, to rescue me
from the grasp or the dread Archer, frankly told me
they could do no more for me, and advised toe to see
aclergy man, and to make such dispcsition of toy lim
ited hinds as best suited me. Au acquaintance who
visited Me at the hospital, kir. Frederick Steinbrom
of Sixth below Arch Street, advised me, as a lintorn
h , pe, to try your Miters, and kindly procured a bottle.
Flom the time 1 commenced taking them the gloomy
shadow of death receded, and 1 am now, thank God
for it, getting better. Though I have taken but two
bottles, I have gained ten pounds, and I feel sanguine
of being permitted to rejoin my wile and daughter
from whom I have heard nothing fur eighteen months:
for. gentlemen, I am a loyal Virginian, from the
entity of Front Royal. In your Invaluable Bitten+ I
owe the certainty of life which has taken the Mai e of
vague fears—to your Bitters will I owe the glorious
privilege of again clasping to my bosom those who are
dearest to me in life. Very truly Yours,
We fully concur in the truth of the above statement
as we had despaired of seeing our comrade, Mr. Ma
lone restored to health.
