    Vide eatdkeniss, who was appoint
ed e Brigadier for good behavior at
Bull Run, lost, as you may remem
ber his right arm at the b,egae of
Fair Oaks on the 31st of Vay
He arrived here to-day from his
home in New England, and reported
for duty at once. He is a remarks
bit man. He is the Havelock of our
army. He is as pious as he is brave.
Every morning and evening he calls
around him hid 3 staff, and engages in
religious exercises. He is always
cool and self-poised, and, relying up
on his God, goes into the shock of
battle with the world behind him,
his eye fixed upon the rewards of the
just, and a clear title to "mansions
in the skies." When the war broke
ont, he was Professor of Mathematics
at West Point, but resigned at once,
went home, and in one week it was
at the head of a full regiment, and
es route for the field.
At Fair Oaks, early in the fight,
he received a shot through the right
wrist. He bound it up, and still re
tained his place at the head of his
brigade. An hour later, his horse re
ceived three bullets at once, the Gen.
another through the elbow joint of
4e same arm first wounded, and two
more through his clothes. He still,
however, kept hisplace for some Lime,
till loss of blood forced him to with
draw. His arm was amputated at
once, and he set out for his home, in
Auburn, Maine. He kept his house
but two days. One week after his
return, he rode by rail thirty miles to
attend a conference of the churches
in his district, where he made a most
touching appeal to all who heard
him to come over to Christ's side.—
His words had great effect. After
our reverses before Richmond, he at
ono toek-the stump to excite an en
thiisiasm for volunteering. His sue
cos has been great. His State has
more than filled her quota, and
though she is the most distant from
this Many of the Eastern States, has
already here two overfull regiments
of her sturdy sons. So much for the
good and brave Gen. Howard.
AN INCIDENT.
A woman from Indiana, hearing that
her son, her only son, a noble youth, was
wonsuisif in 4:40 of the battles before Rich
mond, hastened to seek him. She obtain
ed passes, but searched in vain for him
through all the hospitals in the Peninsu
la. Her endeavors elsewhere were all
equally fruitless. Having looked through
our own hospitals CO no purpose, alone in
a strange pity, friendless, almost heart
broken with motherly anxiety and grief,
she hears, while in one of the wards, !hat
a new boat WO of wourgle4 was ip the
harbor. An uncontrollable conviction
possesses her that her son is among them.
She boogies almost distracted with im
patience to fly to him ; and would not
waititill the next day, when the wounded
were tp lande.d. One of our noble up_
town *dies, who devote themselves to the
sick and wounded, happened to be present
and could not resist her distress. She
finally persuaded an officer to procure a
boss, and at once go with the mother to
the steamer. The very first wounded man
looked upon her was her own son. He
sprang to her with the exclamation, "0
mother! I knew you would come. "
It was to her a terrihle shock, for she
paw that the seal of death was on him.—
He was mortally wounded through the
lunge, and died that night in his mother's
arms, The lady who had interested her
self in her, anxious to know her fate, yet
hearing nothing, sought the ship on the
next day, and found the mother alone with
her dead boy, almost beside herself with
grief. The wounded had been taken off
the ship, the officers and crew had gone
OD shore, and there was nobody to care
for the bereaved woman, whom no one
knew. This heartless' desertion is a last
ing shame to the vessel, whose name we
do not care to disclose. The lady soon
made arrangements for having the body
decently toffined, and took the mother to
her own home. The American.;Express
Pompany, to their honor, or being ac
fmainted with the facts, volunteered to
convey the body to Indiana free of expense,
and the mother, with her sacred charge
left for her home. Before leaving she
was induced to say something respecting
her family history, and, singularly enough,
it appeared that herself and her benefactor
were originally from the same New-Eng
land village, and their fathers had been
long and well tried friends.
A Successful Rebel Ruse.
The rebels have used our telegraph
wire in Virginia recently with even
more signal success than they bad in
ICentucky, and with quite as much
impudence. 'he moment Fitz Hugh
Lee captured Manassas, he telegraph
ed in the name of Gen. Pope's Chief
of Staff, .to the proper officer in Wash
ington, requesting him to send to the
J unction a large supply of shelter
tents, and harness for artillery hor
ses. The order was promptly filled,
and the rehels were soon gladdened
by tge appearance pf a train loaden
ed with what they wanted. Jackson,
on his arrival, sent a message to the
Superintendent oflifilitary Railroads
cooly asking him to change the time
table on the road for his accommoda
tion-. We shall probably soon find
these and other equally gratifying
correspondence published in the fo i -i n
of . a telegraphic operator'S diary . in
the Southern newspapers.
