BY THOMAS MACKELLAM
h my little brother and my sisters, and tell them
I died for my country."
On the field of battle, mother,
• All the night alone I lay;
Angels watching o'er me, mother,
Till the breaking of the day.
.1 lay thinking of you, mother,
And the loving ones at home,
dill to our dear cottage, mother,
boy again I setitn'd to come.
He to whom you taught me, mother,
Pn my infant knee to pray,
Kept my heart from fainting, mother,
When the vision passed away.
In the gray of morning, mother,
Comrades bore me to the town :
From my bosom tender fingers
Wash'd the blood that trickled down
"'Must Boon be going, mother *
'..Going to the home of rest:
,liiaSyse as of old, my mother,
Press me nearer to your breast.
Would I could repay yon, mother,
For your faithful love and care:
God uphtdd and blesslou, mother,
In this bitter woe you bear.
Xias for me my little brother,
Kiss my sisters, loved so well :
When you sit together, mother,
dell them how their brother fell,
Tell to them the Story, mother,
When I sleep beneath the sod,
"rikiat I died to save my country
AU frOm love to her and God.
Leaning, oni,he merit, mother,
Of tbiOla who died for all,
peace is in my bosom, mother,—
Hark I I hear the angels call
Don't you hear them singing, mother ?
Listen to the music's swell
Now I leave you, loving mother—
God be with you—fare you well.
THE PLACE TO DIE.
Home should 'be the first word on
this subject. The thought of that
spot brings in every heart at the
question, for no feeling is more com
mon than a desire to die at home.
" Let thy servant, I pray thee,
tarn back again, that 1 may die in
my own city; and be buried by the
graves of my father and mother."—
How many times has this prayer
been •offered. So universally is this
desire--felt and acknowledged, that
the words "he died among strangers !"
go straight as an arrow to the heart.
You cannot withstand the simple ap
veal to your sympathy.
God used this desire of the heart
Whaelfe said to a disobedient people,
"And I shall east you out into anoth
er country, where ye were not born,
and there shall ye die."
To die at home ! It is the thought
to=day of a thousand hearts among
the sick and wounded soldiers of our
armies. Some of these, we are per
suaded, are now turning from the
close i warm, hospitals, or the soldier's
bent,to the beautiful country, and
longing for the sight of their native
hills, for the old familiar home , with
its pleatiant faces and loving earts,
for the country church-yard with its
white marble and green mounds, its
quiet and rest.
"Comrade, I am going to die !"
said a poor soldier in Virginia, the
other day. " Can Ibe taken home?"
Poor heart! How pitiful this last
struggle for earthly comfort. The
same old story—let me die at home
—bat with the old, touching interest.
Home! the last point on the receding
shore to which the dying eye has
turned.
The place to die becomes a near
question to us when, as all nature—
tree, bud, and blossom—has come
forth with a new and perfect life, we
are %Wed on to lay under the green
turf many of our friends who have
died from home. Then we are so of
ten called upon to place our flags at
half-mast, when- the Dead March has
become so familiar a sound, when
soldiers with measured tread and
arms reversed so often meet the eye,
we must think of the place to die.
gi There is no place like home to
die," said a student, who had come
home sick.
Young friend, you do well to love
Tour home. There is nothing like
It to keep the heart pure. You touch
a cord which quivers when you speak
to a stranger about the bitterness of
dying from home. But there may
b,ea better place than home to die.—
Ruth thought so when urged to re
turn to her own country and kind
red. " Where thou diest I will die,
and there will Ibe buried." Thomas
thought so when he said to his broth
er disciples, as their Master was
called to meet danger, . 4 Let us go,
that we may die with Him." Sam
son found a better place than home :
" And Samson said : 'Let me die
with the Philistines l' and be bowed
liims4lf with all his might; and the
house fell upon the lords, and upon
all the people that were therein. So
the dead that ha slew in his death
were more than, they which he slew
in his life." Regulus chose his place
to die among his enemies. When
Thomas Drummond said : "Tell my
brethren for me that .I died at my
post," do you doubt, kind reader, that
4 found the right place to die ?
Yes' indeed-rand I trust the words
bear comfort to some heart— the
right place to die is the post of duty,
be it on the field of battle, among
strangers, or in a mother's loving
arms.
