i'rt 185 e, as near as 1 can remember, a small
pimple Made its appeatam e un my upper lip, which
sewn became enlarged and sore. I used poultices of
sorrel, and a wash of blue vitriol, without effect.—
the sore extending, I called on Dr. Ely, of .
Schellsbure, who iironuanceil it CANCER, and pre
scribed a wasS of sugar of lead and bread poultices.
Finding these no-nether of Ito avail, I called upon Dr.
Shaffer, of Davidsville, Somerset county, who also
pronounced the disease Catice•, and gave me internal
and external lemedies—the latter consisting principally
of caustic; but all to no purpose as the disease con
tinued spreading toward the DOH,. 1 next used a prep
aration of arsenic, in the form of salve. This for te
tune checked the disease, but the intiaination soon in
ased. I called upon Dr Static', of St. Clairsville,
Bedford county, who a 1,,, toot:oath:ea the disease Can
cer, and applied a salve s ,id to he a neVer failing rem
edy, but it had uo effect whatever in checking the
spread of the sore. In December is the same year, the
disease had eaten away a greater part of my upper lip,
and had attacked the nose, when I went to Cincinnati
where I consulted Prof R. S. Newton, of the Eclectic
Medical College. lie pronounced the disease "a cu
taneous Cancer, superinduced by an inordinate use Of
mercury." Ile applied mild zinc ointment, and gave
me internal remedies. My face healed up, .ut the in
flammation was not thoroughly lelllo‘ ed. In February,
1857, he pronounced me cured, and I left for home. In
April the disease again returned. and so violent was
the pain that I could not rest at night. Late in May I
returned to Cincinnati, and again placed myself under
the charge of Dr. Newton. with whom I remained un
til September, during which time lie used every knt win
.enfiedy, and partly succeeded in checking the disease,
but when 1 returned home there were still three dis
charging ulcers npon my face. 1 continued using New
ton's preparations, and also medicine that I got from
Dr. Ely, bat the Cancer continued growing until it had
eat off the left side 4 . ay nos e. the greater portion of
my left cheek, and had attacked ley left eye. I had given
up all hope of over being cured, since Dr. Ely said he
could only give relief, hut that a cure was impossible
In March, 1858, I benefit a bottle of "Blood Searcher;"
but I mustconfes3 that I had no faith in it. I was very
weak when I commeneetl taking it; but I found that I
gained strength day by day, and also that the ulcerit
commenced drying up. It continued, and when the
third bottle was taken, my face was healed as if by a
miracle. I used the fourth bottle, and I have been
healthier since than 1 have bean fur the last seven rears.
Although my face is sadly distigurad, I am still grateful
to a benign Providence who has spared lily life, and
which has been done through the instrUmentality of
