Dr. Ball, in his Journal of Health,
says that very .
,tor . ,, **or • oa th s
which tan saii‘kissioseirrsia. disease
of tho heart do really arise from that
cause. To ascertain the real origin
of sudden deaths, the doctor says the
experiment has been tried in Europe,
and reported to a scientific congress
held at Strasburg. Sixty-Six eases
of sadden deaths wore made the sub
jects of a thorough post-mortem ex
amination. In these cases only two
were found who died from disease of
the heart. Nine of the sixty-six
died - from apoplexy, while there
were forty-six cases of congestion of
the lungs; that is, the lungs were so
full of blood they could not work,
there not being room enough for a
sufficient quantity of air to enter to
support Jife. The dcictor goes on to
enumerate the causes that may pro
duce congestion of the lungs. They
are—cold feet; tight shoes; tight
clothing ; costiveness '
• sitting still
until chilled through after being
warmed by labor or a rapid walk ;
going too suddenly from a close
heated room into the cold air, es
pecially after speaking, and sudden
depressing news operating on the
blood. These causes of su dden death
being known, an avoidance of them
may serve to lengthen our valuable
lives, which would otherwise be lost
tinder the verdict of a heart com
plaint.. That disease is supposed to
be incurable, and hence men may
not take the pains they would to
avoid sudden death if they knew it
lay in their power.
Mir Th e venerable Henry Smith,
in a letter to the Western Christian
Advocate, says : "I have thought it a
little einarkable th4t the two oldest
pre#o,ers on the itinerant list in
Awrica, perhaps in the world, should
be found in the bounds of the Balti
more Conference, and living not ten
miles apart. Brother Joshua Wells
.s ninety-seven, and I am within a
few months of ninety-three, and my
wife eighty-three."
a i r Mrs. Catherine Arbin died in
Baltiinore on the 21st insf., aged 118
years. She had been coafmed to her
bed for three years. Mrs. Arbin was
born in Philadelphia in 1744, and
lived to see her fifth generation, with
great-great grandchildren. Her
youngest child is now living, at the
age of about seventy-eight years.—
Her father, who was of Baltimore,

THE ABOVE IS A PORTRAIT OF DAVID NrellE/LBA•
Sworn ~ t atement of David M'Creary. of Napier tp.,
Bedford county:
In April, iBsti, as near as I can remember, a small
pimple made its appearance OD my upper hp, which
soon became enlarged and sore. I used poultices of
sorrel, and a wash of blue vitriol, without effect.—
Finding the sore extending, I called on Dr. Ely, of
Schellsbutg, who pronounced it CANCER. and pre
scribed a wash of sugar of lead and bread poultices.
Finding these remedies of no avail, I called upon Dr.
Shaffer, of Davidsville, Somerset county, who also
pronounced the disease CL.n..:e•, and gave tie (inertial
and external retnedies—the latter consisting principally
caustic;of but all to no purpose as the disease con
tinued spreading toward the nose. I next used a prep
aration of arseni.., in the tone of salve. This for a
time checked the disease, but ihe inflantation soon in
t', aced. I called upon Dr. Statler, of St.
Bedford county, who also pronounced the disease Can
cer, and applied a salve arid to be a never failing rem
edy, but it bad no effect whatever in checking the
spread of the sore. In December in the same year. the
disease hail eater[ away a greater part of my upper lip,
and had attacked the nose, when I went to Cincinnati,
where I consulted Prof R. S. Newton, of the Eclectic
Medical College. He pronounced the disease "a en•
raucous Cancer, superindmed by an inordinate use of
mercury." He applied mild zinc ointment, and gave
me internal remedies. My fare healed up, but the in
flammation was not thoroughly removed. In February,
1857, he pronounced inn cored, and I left for borne. In
April the disease again returned, and so violent was
the pain that I rooiu not Mst at night. late in May I
returned to Cincinnati, and again placed myself under
the charge of Dr. Newton. with whom I remained un
til September. during which time he used every known
remedy, and partly succeeded in chef king the disease,
but when I returned home there were still three dis
charging ulcers upon my face. 1 continued using New
ton's preparations, and also medicine that 1 got from
Dr. Ely, but the Cancer continued growing until it had
eat r.f the left side of my nose, the greater portion of
my left cheek, and had attacked mg loft eye. I had given
up all hope of ever being cured. since Dr. Ely said he
could only give relief, but that a cure was impossible
In March, ItOu. I bought a bottle of "Mood Searcher;"
