Banyan's Wit.
Bunyan had a ready wit, as well as an
elegant tongue, spd could silence a vain
pretender by sarcasm with as lunch ease
as he refuted an errorist by strong argu
'Marts. Towards the close of Bunyan's
Imprisonment, a Quaker called upon him,
hoping to make a convert of the author 'of
'the "Pilgrim's Progress!' He thus ad
dressed him,
' '''Friend John, lam come to thee *ith a
message from the Lord, and after having
Searched for thee in half the prisons in
England, I am glad that I haVe found thee

"If Abe Lord sent you," sarcastically re
titrnerßanyan, "you need not have taken
sOinuch pains to find me out, for the Lord
knows I have been a prisoner in . `betiford
jail these twelve years past."
How to be Contented.
That is undeniable good logic and good
philosophy, which reminds us that there
are two classes• of things which we should
never fret about ; one-is things V . rhich can-
Inat'be helped; the other, things which can
liukelped. But the logic and the philoso
phy alike fail in the case of a neighbor of
ours, (the representatiy, of thousands, we
ismose,) who• insists that with him the
hitting is the very It,hing which cannot be
helpedl Much bet& than tbis was the
&mansion .of the good lady, who remarked
Odit'she had been trying for years to get a
contentee , :mind, bUt havipg, failed in the
eadeavor; she'had finally "settled down lo

THE ABOVE HI A PORTRAIT 01 , DAVID WICEILARY•
sworn statement of David M'Creary, of Napier sp..
Bedford county:
In April, ISM, as near as I can remember. a small
pimple made its appearance on my upper lip, which
soon became enlarged and sore. I used poultices of
sorrel, and a wash of blue vitriol, without effect.—
Finding the sore extending, I called on Dr. Ely, of
schellsburg, who pronounced it C afiiiCEß and pre.
scribed a wash of sugar of lead and bread poulltime.
Finding these remedies of no avail, I called upon Pr.
Shaffer, if Davitisville, Somerset county, who also
pronounced the disease Canceii, and gave me internal
and external remedies—the latter consisting principally
of caustic; hut all to no purpose as the disease con
tinued spreading toward the nose. I next used aprep
arai iOll of arsenic, in the (Orin of salve. This for a
time checked tie disease, but the infatuation soon in
creased. I called upon Dr Steller, of St. Clairsville.
Bedford county. who also pronounced the disease Can
cer, and applied a salve s ild to be a never failing rem
edy, butt it had no effect whatever in checking the
spread of the sore. In December in the same year. the
disease had eaten away a greater part of my upper lip,
and had attacked the nose, when I went to Cincinnati
where I consulted Prof R. Si Newton, of the Eclectic
Medical College. Ile pronounced the eisease "a Cu
taneous Cancer, superinduced by an inordinate use of
mercury." lie applied mild zinc ointment, and gave
me internal remedies. My face healed tip. but the In
flammation was not thoroughly removed. In February,
1857, lie pronounced me cured. and I left lhr home. it
April the disease again returned, and so violent was
the pain that I untie not rest at night. Isle in May I
returned to Cincinnati, and again placed myself under
the charge of Dr. Newton. with whom I remained un
til September. during which time he used every known
remedy. and partly MICA ceded in checking the disease,
hut when I returned home there were still !hire dis
charging Wrers upon my face. I continued using New
ton's preparations, and also medicine that I grit from
Dr. Ely, but tile Cancer continued growing until it had

my left chit*. sad kad aneeketi my left eye. I had given
up all hope of ever being cured, since Dr. Ely said he
could only give relief, but that a cure was impossible.
In March, 18'8. I bought a bottle of - Blood Searcher;"
but I must confess that I had no faith in it I was very
weak when I commenced taking it; but I found that I
gained strength day by day, and also that the alum
commenced drying up. I continued. and when the.
