Thb political leasun of 1!)12 la an old
one. A plurality beats a majority if tbe
majority ia divided Bgalnat ilaelf.
Thc milkweed la recommended a an
addition to the menu. As the country
baa another Democratic period on its
bands the thistle also may be considered.
Mr. Wilson received only 43 per cent
of tbe tout vote in the United States.
The Democratic party Is so far less than
half that it abould even develop some
modesty,
Tub Democrats intend to try the bud
get system of making appropriations,
but Just now the people are more inter
ested In tbe Democratic plan for raising
revenue.
Sixtren years ago Confess assembled
with a Democratic period of lull control
ahead. But no good citizen hopes that
the results within the next two years will
be a repetition of history.
Much of Mr. Wilson's mail contains
Democratic warning against Mr. Bryan
aa a member of the cabinet. With or
without a portfolio Mr. Bryan is War
wick, and bia enemies may tnaite the
most of it,
Tr a Democratic referendum could be
held at this lime tbe classified civil ser
vice would be destroyed root and branch.
Tbe wave of Democratic hunger hits Mr.
Wilvon harder at Bermuda than any
park by wireless.
Under date nf December 5, a Washing
ton, D. C, dispatch says: Secretary of
War 8tlm son, by inference, to-day
cored the promiscuous grsntlng of water
rights to private interests in an address
before tbe National Rivera and Harbors
Congress here, "Tbe taxpayers of this
country should get the benefits from these
resources," be declared. "I am greatly
interested in the question of tbe building
of leveea on the Mississippi river. I am
a thorough believer that this should be a
national question. It was brought closely
to my attention by the recent fl .ods and
the work done by the War Department
for tbe relief of hundreds. The control of
the Mississippi liver approaches nearest
tlia Panama Canal aa a national pro
perty." Tbe policy of tbe Taft adminis
tration baa all along been to safeguard the
interests of tbe people In dealing with
wster rights, as was shown during the
recent session of Congress when the
President vetoed tbe dam bills passed by
that body favoring the giving awy of
water power rights to private corpora
tions. Will tbe incoming administration
be as watchful In this respectf
