HAD TO FIGHT A MOB.
But J. Pierpont Morgan wat "There
With the Goodi."
Florence, Italy. J. Pl-arpont Mor
ean was forced to physically fight his
way out of Florence. The crowd be
lieved that a picture bought here by
Morgan might be the famous Mona
Lisa stolen from the Parte Louvre
some time go.
For Rflvenil dayB Becret service men
had been dogging Morgan prompted
by newspaper articles which declared
that the American millionaire was
bargaining with secret emissaries for
the famous a Glaconde, The Flor
ence papers had printed bitter attacks
upon "rich Americans who made art
mercenary." The volatile Florentines,
aroused by these attacks, determined
that if the famous painting was in
Florence, it should not be taken away
by Morgan.
At the railway station, when Mor
gan appeared with Mrs. Burns, fol
lowed by the secret service men, sev
eral hundred Florentine ;;t lovers
wre on hand. As Morgan and his
sfster dismounted from their automo
bile, they were greeted with a chorus
of jeers and shrieUs. The crowd
closed in about them, and they were
unable to enter the station.
Glaring about him the American
financier started through the crowd
and shouting to Mrs. Burns to follow
him, he began to light his way out.
But the Jeering crowd declined to fall
back. With muttered imprecation
and with flushing eyes, the Wall street
power raised his heavy stick above his
head, and striking right and left, scat
tered the angry crowd before him.
But meantime he had forgotten his
sister, and the crowd, closing In be
hind him, surrounded her. The few
police on duty at the station, aided
by the secret service men, made an in
effectual attempt to rescue her from
the crowd. Finally Morgan fought
his way back, and taking her arm al
most carried her to the train.
