Buying the Spring Needs
Will be a Real Pleasure
"When you deal with this store. A railroad schedule ideally
adapted to your wants permits you to leave home at a conven
iently late hour in the morning, gives you four hours in which
to do your shopping and gets you back in plenty of time for the
evening meal.
Remember, we "pay the freight." On purchases amount
ing to 10, we pay your fare one way; purchases ot $20 or over
entitle you to a rebate covering the cost of your round trip
ticket. But if you can't come,
Write Us or Use the Telephone.
Out of town orders receive the most careful attention at
the Smart & Silberberg Co., and in all cases ' they're T filled on
the same day that they are received.
Spring Hats Lavishly Provided.
This is a season remarkable for the diversity of its milli
nery style!. You will surmise that on glancing over the hosts
of varying models on display in the millinery section, where we
have taken full advantage of Fashion's generosity to give our
patrons extraordiuary scope for choice.
Never before has more attention been given to shapes; more
skill displayed in forming their outlines; more care taken ti in
sure just the right angle, just the tight effect. No longer can
you say "This is my best shape," for whatever shape is in ques
tion, in tailored or dress hats, here you will find perhaps half a
dozen others equally as becoming, giving rare opportunity for a
change.
The Prices Are Wonderfully
Modest.
No question about it for value this season's hats at the
Smart & Silberberg store are the best ever shown hereabouts.
Already they have called forth a world of praise.

GERMAN KNEW THE PIECE
Amusing Incident in Campaign to En

Mrs. William G. Boyd of Kingsbury

Daughters of the American Revolution
ind former chairman of the Missouri

iponsible for the new order requiring
ill public concerts in this city to be
soncluded with "The Star Spangled
Banner." During a talk with Park
Commissioner Davis, in which the lack
Df respect shown the national air by
St. Louisans.in public places was de
plored, Mrs. Boyd suggested a cam
paign of education as a remedy for the
txletlng conditions. She is still laugh
ing over the results of the attempt.
She and her husband, with Commiss

the evening of the first band concert,
ifter the new order went into effect,

to notice the music except one big
Serman, who gave vent to several dis

knew what that piece was.

Architecturally Speaking.
"I am the architect of my own for

replied Mr. Holden Howes, "by being

AN EXCUSE FOR HUSBANDS
Discovery of Woman Who Has Spent
Twenty Years In Studying Do
mestic Problems,
A heavy load of moral responsibility
should never be foisted upon a man In
the first flush of youth. If It is, he
Is almost sure to let it slide off when
he arrives at years of maturity, and all
?orts of complications are liable to fol
low. Mary Austin, who wrote "The Ar
row Maker," explained these things
ind several others to the members of
:he Legislative league at the Waldorf
Astoria. "I have been spending a good deal
)f time lately at the domestic relations
:ourt," she said In elucidation of her
statement concerning the overfreight
?d young man, "and I have learned
.hat in a great majority of cases the
nan 40 or thereabouts who has grown
:lred of his wife, because her beauty
las faded and refuses to support her
any longer, so that she has to appeal
to the courts, was compelled to go to
work when he was thirteen or four
:een to help maintain his parents or
mothers and sisters. By the time he
eaches middle life his moral muscles,
shlch were strained and stretched be
ond their proper capacity when they
were still soft and untrained, have be
come feeble, If they haven't snapped
.ntirely, and he can't be depended
jpon for anything."
Mrs. Austin admitted that what she
lad Just said wasn't generally known,
)ut she added that It was nevertheless
ibsolvitely true. She was sure of it,
aecause she had spent 20 years study
Jig Just such problems.
Leave It to Her.
"I asked your husband last evening
If ho had his life to live over again If
he would marry you, and he said he
certainly would." "He certainly
wouldn't." Houston Post.
Put Away, Despair.
Fight like a good soldier, and If thou
sometimes fail through frailty, take
again greater strength than before,
-trusting In My more abundant grace.

Fashion Is Fashion,
"Why do all tbe women walk like
lucks this year?" was the. question
mt to a friend of mine, years since,
ay a younger brother.
le did not know that a quite new
iilild of corset had suddenly, during
the summer niontha, "come In." To
wear it meant change of gait and pos
ture, eventually actual change of
shape. Yet we all wore It and doubt
less went on praising the Venus of
Melos as we did so.
Th notion that, after we have
learned from the scientists to deal In
evolutionary periods of millions of
years, we ought not naively to expect
to alter the human form In a season
or two, never occurred, I fancy, to
any of us.

Wanted a Chance,
One of the performers at Proctor's
this week relates an incident that oc
curred in a western town where he
waa playing an engagement, There
was an act on the bill in which a po
liceman had to chase a thief across
the stage without catching him. The
cop's part was so simple that It was
always given to some employe of the
house. There waB a "prop" man In
that town to whom this little task
was assigned and he felt like a real
actor. In the middle of tbe week's
stand, just before the act was to go
on, the "prop" man said to the player
who had the fugitive business:
"Say, mister, let me catch you to
night, will you?"
"Why so?"
"Well, my girl is In the audience to
night." Newark (N. J.) Star.
