ASKS AID OF STATE
IVRAL DELEGATES WAIT ON
HIGHWAY COMMISSIONER E.
M. BIGELOW.
COMMISSION NAMED BYTENER
To Codify the Building Laws of the
State, and to Report Before
the Next Legislature
Assembles.
Harrlsburg. Requests for improve
ment of state roads, either under the
main highway building plan or
through state aid, were made to High
way Commissioner K. M. Blgelow
from half a dozen counties, and as
son as the weather permits surveys
and inspections will be made to de
termine the cost.
Representative Alfred Marvin
brought a delegation from Pike coun
ty which asked that work be started
this spring on the highway from
Stroudsburg to Port Jarvis. Another
delegation from Lancaster county
asked for road construction In the vi
cinity of Pleasant Mills, and Cumber
land county citizens asked what
should be done to obtain state aid for
Improvement of roads In East Penns
fcoro. Other delegations were here from
Lycoming and Cleaiileld counties and
more are expected next week.
The preliminary work is being
pushed as rapidly as possible with the
funds at the disposal of the commis
sioner and over 40 engineer corps are
now at work surveying the main road
routes which must be taken over by
the state on June 1. Until these roads
are taken over the state has no Ju
risdiction, although the Impression
seems to prevail to the contrary In
many places, letters from Philadel
phia automobile associations having
been received at the department

the roads were township property at
present and would be for some
months, and that township authori

Tener Names Commission.
Harrlsburg. Announcement has
been made by Governor Tener of tl
appointing of the five men who are
to codify the building laws of Penn
sylvania with the idea of securing
uniformity in construction and the
greatest measure of safety, the selec
tions being made in accordance with
the Joint resolution approved June 14.
The commission is not only to cod
ify the laws, but is also to "report on
the needed requirements for the
proper and safe construction of
buildings and to determine the
strength and character of materials
used therein." The commission is to
report to the governor in advance of
the next session of the legislature a
bill "to protect the welfare and best
Interest of the owners and occupiers
of buildings, including the erection
and construction of buildings general
ly," and to collate into one act stat
utes existing and those needed relat
ing to construction of buildings, mak
ing repairs, erection of party walls,
fire escapes and elevators and to regu
late use of materials not now covered
by law.
The commissioners are to serve
without compensation but are allowed
16,000 for expenses, one of their num
ber to be a man skilled in building.
The men selected are: John T. Wind
rim, architect, Philadelphia, who was
architect of the state library and mu
seum building; Kdgar A. Weimer, a
noted engineer of Lebanon; James L.
Stuart, builder, Sewickley; Freas
Styer, attorney, Norrlstown, and
Charles A. Hexamer, building expert,
Philadelphia.

As soon as the ceremony was over
the- little girl leaned over to her
mother and said In an excited whisper,
"Mamma, do they drown some one
here over' Sunday?"

Sometimes appeal to the man who as yet does not seriously
consider the real value of a dollar.
He paya from $10 00 to 823.00 extra because of his
"notions."
T The difference io our clothes aud those offered elsewhere is
V p all in our favor,
You'll fiod that our Suits at from $15 00 to $25 00 are
being worn by the but dressed men in this city, men who un
derstand, meu who have long ago learned that the proper
clothes to buy are those made up and ready for use. The kind
of clothes wo sell makes friends and holds them

board of charities, about which con

successfully and much good has been
accomplished by prompt investigation
of reports and correction of condi
tions. The jurisdiction extends not
only to prisons and almshouses but to

Evil Bound to Spread,
There Is no sort of wrong deeds of
which a man can bear the punishment
alone. You cannot Isolate yourself and
eay that, the evil that is In you shall
not spread. Men's lives are as thor
oughly blended with each pther as the
air they breathe. Evil spreads as
necessarily as disease. George Eliot.
