Hour Glasses for Pulpits.
The twenty minute sermon Is a
purely modern Invention, as is prov
ed by the number of pulpit hour
glasses that are still to be found In
many old churches. In the register
of St. Catherine's, Aldgate, the fol
lowing entry, dated 1564, occurs:
"Paid for an hour glass that hanged
by the pulpit, where the preacher
doth make a sermon, that he may
know how the hour passeth away,
one shilling."
A modern pulpit glass probably
