"Because we made a slight error In the notice of an entertainment published last week," says tbe Western Slope Cri terloo, of Olathe, Col, "about three bun dred and twenty-eight people stopped us on tbe stroet and called our attention to tbe matter. Funny some of them haven't that keen an eye when we suggest that their subscription may be In arrears." One of the most disgustingly brutal sights that sojourners on this ball of earth are called upon to witness Is that of a Smart Alex with a drink or two aboard laying the whip onto a willing horse, as it Btrains every nerye and muscle to haul a buggy containing him and a fool friend or two at a breakneck pace. Punxsutaw ney Spirit. Just our sentiments to a T. At last tbe weather man, who has been predicting rain or snow for this latitude fur some time past, Is to have bis Inning, as the flue spell of weather seems to be broken, yesterday morning opening u 3 drear and dismal enough, with rain, sleet and snow coming all at once. Few If any can recall a more delightful fall siaion than we have experienced up to Monday of thia week, and we should not be uumindful of com forte and blessings thus enjoyed, and not set up a growl at tbe first sppearance of inclement weather. Since the strange disappearance of Eben Oibba from bis borne near Kinzua, on the l(ltb of last October the authorities of McKean county and tbe relatives and friends of tbe missing man have kept up a dilgeut search and investigation with the hope of finding some clue that would lead to the solving of the mystery wbicb surrounds bis disappearance, but up to the present time tbe searchers have not received one bit of encouragement and fears are eutertained that tbe mystery will remain uusolved. In Its report for November the Der rick says tbe fields producing light oil show an iucrease of 80 In tbe number of wells completed during the month as compared with October, but there is a de crease of 1,400 barrels in new production. There Is an iucrease of 56 in tbe number of dry boles and gas wells. In uew work tbore is a net decrease of 61 from the total at the close of October; 45 In new rigs and six in the number of drilling wells. The total at the end of November was 1,619, aud at the close of October tbe number was 1,680. Tbe total of rigs standing No vember 30 was 407, and tbe number of wells drilling on that date was 1,222. Dr. Dunn dressed ber injuries. Wm. D. Hunter, son of Mr. and Mrs, Wm. L. Hunter of this place, whose un fortunate condition of mind has bteu a matter of sincere regret to many Irlends for some time, disappeared from bis home bere last Wednesday forenoon. Io summing up tbe value of adver tising, John Wanamaker, one of tbe larg est and moat persistent advertisers in the country, is quoted assaying: "Advertis Ing does not Jlrk; it pulls. It begins very gently at first, but the pull Is steady. It Increases day by day and year by year until it exerts an Irresistible power." Mr, Wanamaker ought to be competent au thority as be spends a princely fortune every year in newspaper advertising. The bazaar at Bovard's ball last Fri day evening, given under lbs auspices of tbe Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyter Ian church, was doubtless the most suc cessful affair of tbe kind ever held In Tionesta, and was patronized by fully a hundred people or more. No less than eight booths were in operation and were kept busy in dieposingof the great variety of goods that were put on sale. Not a single article was left on hand, and con sidering the amount of labor and expense devoted to each, there was a bargain In every article for the eager purchaser. Tbe serving of oysters constituted a feat ure of tbe evening tbat was well patron ized and much enjoyed. The amount netted for the church furnishing fund was very close to the $200 mark, so tbe ladies feel that they were well rewarded for the great amount of labor expended in the preparation and carrying out of the suc cesslul affair. "Fish Commissioner William E. Meehan bas been asked to make an In spection of tbe Clarion river on one of the most original complaints ever filed in bis office. It is to tbe effect that the stream is so polluted by acids aod refuse from manufacturing plants that no living thing can reins iu In its waters and the commissioner says that he has been in formed that cows wading in tbe stream lose the bair from tbeir legs, while tbe ducks long since quit tho water because the acids ate offtbeir feathers and crippled tbeir legs," says tbe Harrisburg Tele graph. To Care for Venango's Prisoners. Forest county does not have any pris oners in Its cqunty jail and, evidently, It wants some, for tbe County Commission ers baye received a letter from tbe Sheriff stating tbat be will be glad to accommo date Venango county's jail prisoners during tbe construction of tbe (ail in this county next summer. Tbe commission ers have practically decided to accept tbe proposition. It is likely that Venango county will be without a jail for six or eight months and there is no place in the county where prisoners can be cared for. The Forest county iail is located at Tionesta and the train service between Franklin and tbat place is good. Tbe authorities will be able to go up in tbe morning and come back before noon or go op in the after noon and come back in tbe evening. Last Friday a week Frank, tbe 12-year-old son of Cbas Day of Tidioute lost a foot while trying tojunip a freight train pass ing through that place. The News notes tbe fact in these wholesome words which apply in almost all localities, Tionesta being no exception: "The report is tbat twenty-one little boys were on tbe train at the time. Just how tbe Day boy was hurt is immaterial. The fact is that be and tbe rest were where tbey had no bus iness to be. How to slop this train jump ing? We don't know. We know of some pareuta who resent beiug told tbat tbeir boya are in dangerous business. We think sometimes tbat there are other par ents who dou't care, while of course there are others who find ibe matter the problem of tbeir lives. This accident will aerve its lesson for a week or so and then the business will be resumed. Tbe doctors removed the left foot of the Day boy about three inches above tbe aukle and the lad seems to be getting along all right. But, be like tbe rest, was 'having a good time,' and goes through life a cripple. In time the rest, If train jump ing 1b persisted In, w ill eltber be crippled or fill a grave in tbe cemetery."
