A
welfare of the whole country and tho
American people, and the blatant po
litical demagogues of th.it body who,
os the Keystone Gazetto of Hellefonte
tersely puts it, "are willing to sacrifice
the welfare of the people and tho
prosperity of the nation in order to
keep themselves In the limelight and
exhibit their wonderful wind power,
and who by so di Ing hope to advance
their own selfish political ambitions
and peculiar state Interests."
Since March 15 hist the stanch and
loyal Republicans have been working
assiduously and Incessantly on the
great question of a wise and effective
tariff bill. They have long been famil
iar with the effect and results of wise
tariff legislation upon the Interests of
all classes In the country wage earn
er, farmer, manufacturer and trans
portation companies. To preserve the
idea of protection has been one of the
cardinal and fundamental principles
of the Republican party since its or
ganization over half a century ago.
The final success of the party in get
ting Into the control of the adminis
tration of government affairs and the
enforcement of its tariff principles, has
given the country an unexampled de
gree of growth and prosperity. When
ever the pi.-licy of protection was tem
porarily reversed then prosperity fled,
business and Industry were paralyzed
end financial distress and ruin, pov
erty, pauperism and crime dominated
the land. "Yet." quoting from the Uelle
fonte Gnzette again, "despite the
splendid history of the past half cen
tury of the nation under Republican
rule, we have a gang of pseudo Repub
licans such as La Follelte, Doll! ver,
Cummins and Beveridge, young as sen
ators, Ignorant as national legislators,
great In their capacity tr emit words
and wind, generally meaningless and
uneffective, and who possess an over
weening political ambition to run
things and to play the role of obstruc
tionists for purely selfish purposes.
Men who hold up the legislation on
the tariff and thus keep in suspense
the rapid resumption of the manufac
turing industries of the country would
for their selfish purposes inaugurate
a reign of soup houses, bring upon the
country a paralysis of business, finan
cial ruin and distress. Flut they will
fail. And they and their skyrocket
speeches and careers as Senators in
relation to the tariff legislation, in a
short time will sink into oblivion, and
the place that knows them now will,
ere long, know them no more forever.
"They cannot succeed because pa-
rlotic Senators and Representatives
will enact a proper law that will pre
serve protection to the American wage
earner and thus preserve the dignity
and honor of American labor and citi
zenship and Becure our own markets
for the products of our mills, our man
ufactories and our farms.
'All honor to the Republican Sena
tors who are working so faithfully and
patriotically for the best interests of
Hie country; and especially do we ap
prove and commend the faithful and
effective work of Senator Penrose as
one of the members of the finance com
mittee In behalf of a proper protective
tariff, as well as the support given th
committee by Senator Oliver.
"When the bill is finally passed the
people will proudly acclaim their
hearty approval of the work well done
by the Republican Senators who have
stood up so stanchly and made this
long contested struggle against politi
cal demagogues In order to secure the
greatest good to the greatest number
and the general welfare and continue!
prosperity of the nation."
In connection with this great debate
going on In the Senate It Is pertinent
to Inquire what has become of the
Democratc policy of free trade, of free
raw material, of a tarlff-for-revenue-only?
Gone a-glimmering! Uncon
sciously the Democrats of the Senate
nare ahsorum me ii.uu-oi-k doctrine

effects upon Hancock as a candidate
for President that the tariff is a local
Issue. Hancock said "only" a local is
sue. That is where he made his mis
take. He had got. hold of a half truth.
The tariff is a local Issue, and Senator
Taliaferro and Senator Bailey and
Senator McHnery and Senator Tillman
and the Senators from other states
where Democrats still exist are so en
tirely convinced or that fact that'they
not only vote for but insist upon pro
tective duties for the products of their
respective localities.
