Last Friday uigbt was tbe fiftieth an niversary of the big frost, June 4th, 1859, according to the best evidence obtainable. Many people are still living who have a distiuct recollection o that wonderfully devastating circumstance, and can recall the appearance of all sorts of vegetation on the day following, June 5th. We are told that one week from that date not a green leaf was to be seen anywhere in all Ibis section, and that every vestige of cereal or vegetable was frozen to the ground, and starvation stared tbe people in the face. Much buckwheat was sown and corn re-planted, and the farmers reaped an abundant harvest of both in the fall. Flour, which shot upward in price immediately after tbe frost, came down again as quickly, and sold for less than before tbe freeze, owing to the large shipments that came from the western states. The Board of Health has Instructed its Health Officer, Peter S. Lindel, to make a general inspection of the Borough to see that, if any nuisances exist that may be prejudicial to good health, that same, If found, may be removed. This Is done lor the benefit of all and we hope that every person will assist the Health Officer in making this inspection by telling him of any unhealthy place they may know of, whether It may be in the cellar or on the lot, as the right of Inspection extends to all parts of tbe bouse as well as to the lots. FROM ANOTHER CORRKSl'ONDENT. A timber deal of considerable note wes consummated recently that for acreage surpasses the majority of sales. Proper, all of Tionesta, are the owners of all tbe timber on the Adauisou property, the deal going through a couple weeks ago. This tract comprises about 8,000 acres and lies on Salmon creek and its tributaries. There is considerable local history attached to this property that through lack of space we are unable to giye. Some 25 years ago the start was made to denude this vast tract of its monster forest beauties aud we might say that all these years have seen tbe forest grow smaller uulil now there is but a handful), as It were, left. Thesiege against this timber was carried on by several companies, a few of which we might mention here: J. M. Kepler, Tio nesta Lumber-Co., T. D. Cclllns, and tbe Salmon Creek Lumber Co. The last named company operated the tract until tbe contract expired in 1906. Since then nothing bas been removed. It is esti mated there are 100,000 cords of pulp wood, aside from the saw timber, still remaining on the lands. Tbe timber for manufacturing is upward of ten million feet. The pulp wood will go to Ihe New Yoik and Pennsylvania Company at Johnsonburg, while the saw timber has as yet not been contracted for.
