The great name of Baruum will appear
no more on the circus billboards, but his
great remark "The people like to be

A contkmporary says there are "Ave
flourishing political parties in Pa., not
counting the Republican;" and stiil, the
Republican is the only one that e unts.
Onk packing company announces a re

Mr. Bryan has declared that he finds
greater satisfaction in talking on religion
than on novernment. It is suspected that
be also gives bis fellow-democrats great
er satisfaction.
"A man la not always as neb as he
feels", remarks the Punzsutawney
Spirit. Quite true, and especially ia this
the case after he has stowed away bis
fourteenth drink.
It is said that George Washington was
the-discoverer of petroleum in this conn
try. It was John D. Rockefeller however,
who discovered the wonderful financial
possibilities of it.
TJnlkrs the financial stringency is re
lieved and prices comedown soon, it may
be advisable tu call a conference for the
purpose of separating Thanksgiving Day
and Christmas by something more than
four weeks.
An Ohio foot ball team owns a collec
tion of six broken noses, four broken legs
eight dislocated bones and a dozeu broken
fingers. Satisfied that It has broken all
previous casualty records, the team has
disbanded for the season.
Tux early issues of the Pekin Gazette,
recently suspended after nearly a thous
years ot life, were printed on silk cloth.
From this we Infer that there was a paper
trust in those days, perhaps on the same
order as the one we have in tbese modern
days.
THt, St. Louis Globe-Democrat says "it
is a great comfort to know that every
dollar of the currency of the Un ited States
Is worth 100 oents lu gold." It sure is.
And it would bean additianal comfort if
that dollar would buy mure than fifty
cents worth of meat.
The official majority for John O.Sheatz
the Republican candidate for State treas
urer, is not far from 152,000, according to
returns from all but two counties in
which the vote is closely estimated. Two
years ago Berry the fusion candidate was
elected by 88,194 majority.
McKkan county last week elected
Frank P. Isherwood, Democrat, county
treasurer, defeating the Republican nom
inee, ex-Senator A. F. Bannon. In Craw
ford county the Republicans lost the
president judgeship fight, Thomas J. Pra
tber defeating George F. Davenport by
over 700 majority. The official majority
for Sheaus in Mercer county on Tuesday
of last week was eleven votes. These are
bo me of the strange results of the late
election.
Here is a timely message in these
words of Lincoln: Let reverence for the
laws be taught in the schools, in sem
inaries and in colleges; let it be written
in primers, spelling books and alma
nacs; let it be preached from the pulpit,
proclaimed iu legislative halls and en
forced in courts of justice; and, in short
let it become (he political religion of the
nation; and let the old and the you tin; tbe
riuh and the poor, the grave and tbe gay
of all sexes and tongue and colors and
conditions sacrifice unceasingly upon its
altars.
Forrest R. Nichols, secretary to W.
H. Andrews, territorial delegate to Con
gress from New Mexico, was found not
guilty tn tbe United States District Court
in Pittsburg last week, on the charge of
aiding and abetting Cashier T. Lee Clark,
who succeeded in wrecking the Enter
prise Bank of Allegheny, about twoyears
ano. The .jase was the last of many grow
ing out of the sensational failure. A
majority of the others implicated were
convicted. Mr, Nichols is quite Well
known in tbe western portion of tbe
state, his former borne being Conneaut
ville, and he was a member of the Penn
sylvania legislature from Crawlord coun
ty 20 years ago.
Amomi the most noteworthy viuturies
won at the election last week was tbe
turning over of old Kentucky to tbe Re
publican side. The election of a Repub
lican Governor, and the probable capture
of tbe legislature, will be far-reacbiug in
their results, ami the Domociats of that
rock ribbed bourbon state are rattled as
they never have been before. It 1b prob
able tbe much hounded Caleb Powers
will now get bis just dues, and in a short
time be a free man again. The persist
ency with which Democrats authorities
in Kentucky have been pursuing this
man in their efforts to take his life's blood
has shocked the nation for the past eight
ysars, and if the election results in no
other good than bis freedom from further
jiersecutiou the victory will still be a
cause for honest rejolctng.

The luck of oil well shooters is prover
bial, but an accident occurred this morn
ing that puts in the clear any similar
affair of the kind that ever occurred in
this neighborhood. Herbert Stroud, a
shooter employed by the Clarendon Tor
pedo Company, this morning drove to the
magazine, situated some distance from
Clarendon, and put on two cans of gly
cerine and a box of dynamite. The horses
then took fright and ran away. Tbe gly
cerine was thrown out and a hole broken
in one can, the top was knocked oft' an
other, and both cans became empty by
the contents leaking out on the ground.
The dynamite also was thrown out of the
wagon and none of these exploded. War

A gruesome discovery was made near
Clymer N. Y., late Tuesday afternoon,
Nov. 5lh, by Myron Maxwell, who was
hunting and passed through Brownell's
woods, where he came upon the skeleton
of a man. So horrified was Maxwell
when he made the discovery he hastened
back to town without making an investi
gation. He notified Undertaker Damon,
who went with the Coroner and others to
the woods and removed the bones to Cly
mer. Wiih tbe exception of a signet ring
and a badge bearing tbe number of a
Pittsburg lodge or the A. O. U. W, there
was nothing to lurnisb clew as to the
identity or the man. Several papers lay
near tbe body, but tbey were so badly
crumbled that nothing could be made
out, A jack knife and two cents were
also found. It is thought the man died
two or three years ago, but tbe Coroner
will make an effort to locate relatives by
the aid or tbe lodge pin. The body lay
race downward and was partially covered
with moss.
David Bisb, who is lodged in the Arm
strong county jait charged wiih tbe kill

nies that he did the shooting, and bis
family and quite a uu ruber or friends are
doing everything in their power to get
him clear or tbe scrape. At the Inquest
the coroner's Jury came to a verdict that
the dead man had come to his death by
being shot with a gun in the bands or
David Bisb and this together with tbe
fact that be was once before jailed on tbe
charge or beating bis wife, goes pretty
strongly against him. A number or
witnesses at tbe Inquest swore positively
that Bish had fired tbe ratal shot. Tbe
funeral of the dead boy was held last
Sunday and it was one of the most large'
ly attended ever held In New Bethlehem
Kittanning News. Tbe victim of the
shooting was a nepbew or tbe late Jacob
