PASTOR DIES IN CHURCH.
Aged Pracher Drops ' Datd Ha
Say Farewell and Women Faint.
Berlin, Sept. 17. 'As he concluded
1he last sentence of his f.rewell ser
mon Rev. Albrecht Stagey for more
than hair a century pastor of the
Fvangellcal Holy Cross church, fell
dead In his pulpit Sunday. A panic
followed. In which mtre than 30 wo
men fainted and had' to be carried
from the church.
The minister, who wa 78 years old,
delivered his oration to a crowd which
packed the building, atod Included
many dignitaries of state-and repre
sentatives of royalty. His hearers
were In tears when he finished and
said "amen."
With a farewell gesture the aged
minister was about to leave the pul
pit when he fell to the floor. A trus
tee, who rushed to his pastor's aid,
announced that he was dead. Woman
became hysterical and a pontic en
sued. For hours the church could not
be cleared.
The pastor was a favorite of the em
press and was chosen by her to pro
mote several benevolent societies in
which she Is interested. Death was
due to heart disease.

Rogers Too III to Come to Court.
Boston, Sept. 17. Upon the evi
dence of niem'oers of the family of
Henry H Rogers and the family phy
sician that the wellknown Standard
Oil magnate suffered some sort of
rtroke last July, and has stnee been
unable to transact any business. Judge
Hammond in the supreme court an
nounced that it. would be criKl to com
pel hiR attendance in court, and dis
missed a motion to that effect. The
condition of Mr. Rogers was dlsclosea
In the course of a hearing on a motion
to show that he was capable of at
tending the trial of a suit against htm
for $.r0,000,ft00 brought by C. M. Ray
mond of Fomervllle for alleged con
version of certain royalties in connec
tion with the production of petroleum.
The hearing began last wee!:, with the
testimony of Dr. Charleo U Pratt of
New Bedford, who sUted that Mr.
Rogers had suffered from some stroke
last July, and was not attending to his
business.
Compulsory Vaccination In Porto Rico.
San Juan. P. R.. Sept. 17. Acting
upon the recommendation of Governor
Tost, the executive council has de
cided upon compulsory vaclnation on
the island. Six thousand vaccine
points have been ordered and the
work will be started in the Guayama
district, where varioloid is most preva
lent. There have been no deaths
from smallpox in Porto Rico since the
Spanish-American war, when the
American authorities had the whole
Island vaccinated. At one time deaths
from smallpox were numerous.
