Larchmont Rescued Reduced to 17.
Another name was added to the list
of victims of the wreck of the Joy liner
Larchmont in Block Island Sound last
Monday night, when James Vann, a
colored waiter, who was one of those
saved, died at the East Side hospital
In Providence. His death reduces the
number of survivors of the 1G0 per
sons known to have been on the Larch
mont to 17. The other survivors are
believed to be in a fair way to re
covery. Samuel L. Lacombe of Manchester,
N. H., one of the survivors of the
wreck of the steamer Larchmont, died
from the effects of exposure following
the disaster at the Rhode Island hos
pital. This reduces the number of
survivors to 18.
The Identification of the 7G bodies
that have been recovered has so far
progressed that only eight remained
unclaimed at the morgue Monday. A
few days more will be allowed for iden
tification and then the unknown dead
will be burled by the city.
The United States authorities at
Mew London hnve partially finished
their Investigations of the accident by
taking the testimony of the captain
and crew of the schooner Harry
Knowlton, which rammed the ill-fated
steamer and sent her to destruction.
These men have been released and are
now on their way to their homes.
Those on board the schooner In
sisted that they held their course
straight down the sound from Race
Rock light toward Point Judith, and
that the steamer tried to cut across
the bow of tlifli i-ospei It r unci"
stood that Captain McVey and his
quartermaster declare that the
Bchooner altered her course and luffed
Into their vessel. The controversy Is
likely to continue for some time.
The names of Mr. and Mrs. A. A.
Potter of Andover, N. Y., were added
to the list of the missing.
The steamer Kentucky carried away
49 bodies Wednesday as well as 18
survivors. Thursday the tug Roger
Williams, which came down especially
from Providence, steamed back from
Block Island with 23 rigid forms or her
decks.
