TgK Pittsburg Gazette Times is author
ity for the statement that in the Presby
tery of Pittsburg alone there are twenty
two Paenbyterians churches without pas
tors, including some of the most desirable,
A number of pulpits in the Presbytery of
Erie are also vacant. This would indicate
that the supply of Presbyterian ministers
is not equal to the demand, and naturally
the question arises why such a condi
tion exists. Is it because the remunera
tion is not sufficient, or because the
preaching of the Gospel does not appeal to
yonng men as it should?
A bill has been iutroduced In the
House at Harrisburg prohibiting the de
livery or placing of packages, parcels or
samples of medicines, candies or other
merchandise in houses, upon porches,
lawns or streets. This is a measure fre
quently urged locally. It is a pernicious
praotice of recent years for dispensers of
quack remedies to scatter tliem about
where children may find and swallow
them. Tne bill is a just one and should
be passed, but it should go a step farther
and prohibit the littering of one's door
yard with bills and posters announcing
special sales, advertising patent nostrums,
and the like.
Senator McC'umbkb's service pension
bill passed the Senate on Friday by a
practically unanimous vote. Soldiers of
the Civil or Mexican war who have
reached the age of sixty-two years will
receive f 12 per month under this bill;
seventy years, f 15 and seventy-five years
and over, $20. Of course those who are
receiving larger pensions for disabilities
incurred in line of duty are not affected
by the bill. Neither is anybody else who
is receiving a greater pension that this
bill provides. There are a great many
pension bills in the House and Senate,
some of which apportiou the amount of
pension to the length of the Boldler's sec
vice, but the MoCumber bill is the only
one that has been reported from oomm it
tee in either House.
The earthquake at Kingston, says a
writer in Washington Post, may be ex
pected to induce another crop of "predic
tions" by knavish notoriety-seekers who
seize upon the credulity of the timid.
During the benumbing terror that pos
sesses many persons in apprehending
earthquakes, it is forgotten that there is
no means known to mankind whereby
forecasts may be made of these occur
rences. Science is Ignorant af the cause
of earthquakes, and consequently is un
able to form a theory as to the place or
time of their probable occurrence. All
prophecies of earthquakes to come, by
whomsoever uttered, are the merest rub
bish, of no account except in the fear that
may be inspired In the ignorant and su
perstitious. The damage done by earth
quakes in the world's history has been
exceedingly small. Whooping cough has
been far more deadly to mankind, and
measles is more to be dreaded.
Thk state legislature is moving prompt
ly toward the redemption of the pledges of
reform given in the Republican platform
and by its candidates last fall. Already
bills have been introduced providing for
an investigation of the building of the
capitol; for a 2 -cent railroad fare; giving
trolleys the right to carry freight and the
right of eminent domain; to Investigate
the railroads of the state and also the
Auditor General's and the State Treasur
er's office. This is legislation which the
people are looking for and short of which
tbey will not be satisfied. Other reform
measures are proposed In the state bank
ing laws, which are to be so Improved
upon as to drive dishonest officials and
looters out of business, and give deposit
ors a gimrantee that Ckuir deposits will be
safe and forthcoming when wanted. Pub
lioopiuion is pronounced upon these sub
jects, and our worthy lawmakers will do
woll to tnko boed.
A POSSIBLE SCRAPPLE COMBINE.
Story That Butchers Are Discussing
Advisability of a Trust.
York, Pa., Jnn. 22. There Is a story
circulated here that the butchers of
the state are quietly discussing the ad
visability of forming a scrapple trust.
They say there Is no money in selling
the stuff at from 4 cents a pound In
the country to 8 cents In the cities.
Philadeluhla and Reading, which
consume tons of scrapple, would feel
the efTects of this move first.
Several district attorneys In the
ecrapplc belt have been making quiet
Investigations and at the first move
on the part of the butchers to raise
the price suits will be brought to end
the combine.
Meanwhile It Is best that the people
should be prepared for the worst and
if necessary make their own scrapple.
Here are the directions:
Buy and kill a 200-pound hog. Grind
It quite fine and boll, at the same time
stirring in corn meal. Season with salt
and plenty of pepper and when stiff
turn into moulds. This will make
enough for a large family.

Pastor Arrested For Not 'Cleaning
Church Walk Propounds a Poser.
Scranton, Jan. 22. Probably the
first arrest of its kind In the county
was made here when the Rev. O. C.
Gallenkanip, pastor of the 7-ion Evan
gelical Lutheran church, was ar
raigned before Magistrate Howe on a
warrant Issued by the police depart
ment, charging him with the violation
of a city ordinance by allowing the
sidewalk in front of his church to re
main uncleaned for over 24 hours. The
walk, It is alleged, had been piled up
with snow since the big snowfall of
Thursday.
Mr. Gallankamp indignantly stated
that his vocation lifts preaching and
not cleaning sidewalks. When asked
whose duty Jtf was to clean the side
walk, he , replied It must he Belle-
kanip's
"Jimo Is he," asked the magistrate.
"The grave digger," was the an
swer.
It stumped the magistrate, and he
decided to make an Investigation.
New Site For Church School.
Lancaster, Jan. 22. The trustees of
the Veates Bchool, an Episcopal Insti
tution of learning for boys located at
Belmont, near this city, have pur
chased the Greenland mill property
from the estate of Mrs. Elizabeth G. E.
Bates. The Bates property offers an
Ideal environment for a boys' school.
It contains about. 100 acres, with a
woodland and a beautiful stream run
ning through it. The buildings consist
of a flue old mansion and a four-story
stone mill. . The Rev. Frederick
Gardiner is headmaster of the school.

the ballot box In the First ward of
3henaii(loah, where it is alleged there
were fraudulent returns made to court
at the last general election, has now
been fixed for Feb 5. It had been in
tended by Special Commissioner J. L.
N. Channell to open the box last week,
but the primary elections caused a
postponement. It Is alleged that the
ballot box was stuffed with 100 fraud
ulent votes.

Twenty-Two Dead In Big Four Wreck,
Twenty-two charred and mutilated
bodies have been taken from the
smoldering ruins of the accommo
dation passenger train on the Cleve
land, Cincinnati, Chicago and St.
Louis (Big Four) railroad following
Its destruction Saturday uight by
the explosion of a carload of powder
as It passed a freight train at Sand
ford, Ind., five miles west of Terre
Haute. The number of Injured will
lo.;;I at least 35.
The cause of the disaster has not
been fully explained. The result was
terrible. The shock was felt for 30
miles, many believing ' It an earth
quake.
The entire train, Including the loco
motive, was blown from the track,
tne coaches were demolished, the en
glne was hurled 50 feet and the pas
sengers were either blown to pieces,
some consumed by fire or rescued In
an Injured condition.
Another Wreck In Indiana.
At least 16 persons were crushed or
burned to death early on Saturday-
near Fowler, Ind., In a collision be
tween a freight train and the Cleve
land, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis
"Queen City Flyer," which left Chi
cago Friday night. Ten persons

Three Lake Liners Driven Aground
A terrific gale which blew 90 miles
an hour at times swept, Buffalo for 18
hours Sunday and has done Jl.500.000
damage to Bhl;,p:i:g.
Five lare lake liners wintered just
inside t'.ie breakwall were torn loose
from their moorings and driven
aground. They are believed to be rest
ing on Boft bottom and unless the gale
becomes worse will probably not suf
fer more damage.
For hours the gale swept the water
front with unabated fury, tearing
everything that stood In its path.
Docks and wharves were wrecked and
carried away. Craft broken from their
moorings smashed against bridges do
ing serious damage. Smokestacks
and buildings of lighter construction
were blown down like paper boxes,
but no casualties have been discov
ered. The water in Lake Erie rose three
feet in as many minutes. The Inner
breakwalls have been pounded until
portions of them have been broken
away. Railroads having tracks along
the waterfronts are holding them down
with strings of freight cars.
Old lake men say this is the severest
continued storm that has swept the
lower lake in the last 20 years.
Trial of Harry K. Thaw.
The trial of Harry Kendall Thaw,
heir to the famous Thaw millions of
Pittsburg, began Monday In New York.
He was formally presented, but as
Judge Fitzgerald has another case to
finish It Is probable that Wednesday
will be the very earliest that the real
work of the Thaw trial can begin.
Thus far Thaw's persistent refusal
to agree to a plea of Insanity and his
curt dismissal of several of the best
known lawyers of New York who had
been engaged for his defense, have
baffled his friends and relatives who
had urged upon him the advisability
of such a course."
Intent upon being tried upon the
merits of his case, no one except the
prisoner, his intimate relations and his
present counsel knows what the de
fense will have to offer In justification
of Thaw's undenled act.
House Votes For Salary Raise.
By a rising vote of 133 to 92 the
house of representatives adopted an
amendment to the legislative, execu
tive and judicial appropriation bill
which was taken from the speaker's
table with senate amendments, In
creasing the salaries of the vice pres
ident, the speaker and the members of
the cabinet to $12,000 yearly, and
those of senators and representatives,
delegates from territories and the res
ident commissioner from Porto Rico
to $7,500 yearly, the Increase to take
effect March 4, 1907.
After the house had adopted the pro
vision for an Increase In the salaries
of senators and members the bill was
returned to the senate for action by it,
but the senate went into executive ses
sion without taking it up.
'Frisco School Suits Started.
The foundation for the suit which
will test the right of the local board
of education or San Francisco to
bar children of Japanese parentage
from the public schools was laid when
Keikichi Aoki, the 10-year-old son of
a book-seller, demanded admittance to
the Redding primary school and was
refused permission to enter.
Application was made by attorneys
for the boy to the state supreme court
tor an alternative writ of mandate, and
the United States attorney filed In the
federal court a bill In equity, the two
proceedings to be commenced simul
taneously and under the direction of
Attorney General Bonaparte.
