Tbk effort li once more being made In
the Senate to make the Hon. Reed Smoot
to scoot.
Thk President's message to Congress
fades into nothingness before the chil
dren's messages to Santa Claus.
Congress is to be asked to pass a bill
regulating cold storage. Next, we may
see a bill introduced abolishing cold feet.
Diamonds are getting more expensive.
But so are coal and meat and most other
things that cannot so easily be done with
out, As generous as be Is in praise, Mr,
Bryan still leaves the inference that be
could writn a better message if he only
had the chance.
Some people think there is nothing
mightier than the Big Stick. It is not Its
bigness so much as it is its justness, that
cause some to fear it.
Thk Kansas newspapers are carrying
on a bested discussion as to whether or
not there is a ball. And some of the edi
tors have lived in Kansas long enough to
know.
From the energetic manner in which
Senators Lodge and Beverldge have taken
up the fight against child labor, it seems
they have been taking too seriously the
popular song "Everybody Worka But
Father."
Thkbk Is something wrong with our
modern ideas of romance. Too many
wonieu are harboring the impression that
the highest expression of which their af
fection for a man is capable is to put a
bullet into him.
Thk Hon. Bellamy Storer has managed
to get himself as voluminously consid
ered as all the topics in the Fresideut's
message put together. By this time the
Hon. Bellamy must feel like baltallion
of 25th infantry.
Thk Missouri Supreme Court has de
cided that no one has to pay for anything
purchased from a trust. No one need
grow unduly hilarious over the decision,
however; the trusts will get around It by
shipping the goods C. O, D.
A Democratic paper remarks that the
message sailed into everything except the
Dngley law. That editor has a strange
notion that an assault ought to be made
on a measure identified in every way
with the country's greatest era of pros
perity. Onk of the humors of ihe siluatlon at
Pittsburg is the treatment of strangers as
suspicious characters. It is the impress
ion of visitors that the individuals who
bare been making so much trouble for
the Pittsburg police will be found well
smoked.
Grkat as is the cost of Panama canal
operations, no inconvenience bas been
caused by the payments required. A
billion-dollar country will not be em
barrassed by the construction of an Isth
mian canal, or any other sound waterway
improvement.
Thk President would have won the
grateful admiration of the country if he
had only called the attention of Congress
to the vagaries of the weather man who
keeps moving temperatures in such a
mixed up way that fully one-half of the
time people do not know "where they
are at."
Since the United States went into the
Panama canal project the cash balance in
the treasury bas increased $30,000,000, the
circulation of the country has increased
$000,000,000, and the per capita circulation
nearly 5, a financial situation showing
even a higher degree of prosperity than
was expected by the sanguine.
Senator Forakek mattes some very
sensible observations relative to presl
dential candidates. He denies that be
ever intimated to any living soul that be
is a candidate and be declares that events
and the trend of public attntiment make
presidential nominees, "Nothing that a
man can do with the view of furthering
his ambitiouB for the presidency will
make him an available candidate or give
him any real prominence in this direc
tion," The senator correctly diagnoses
the situation, and it may be added that
his course as a publin man In recent years
has eliminated him as a possibility, so he
needu't worry about the lightning strik
ing in his direction.
There are various kinds of reciprocity,
reasons the Oil City Blizzard. One Is a
denatured species, a kind of a returning
of evil for good. Ills on the principle
that "one good turn deserves another,"
the beneficary being the same in each
caHO. "Give them an iuch and they'll
talte an ell," describes It. Examples of
tlrfs kind of reciprocity are abundant in
public life. Take the case of the colored
soldiers dismissed from service for un
becoming conduct at Brownsville. They
were well provided lor, and sworn to
uphold the laws of the United States, in
stead of doing which they turned their
guns on unprotected citizens and proceed
ed to "shoot up" the town. And the same
principle is olten illustrated in private
lifo. The lieBt treated are frequently the

an ardent Republican iu bis political
faith, having cast his ballot for the first
candidate of that party for President,
John C. Fremont, never wavering in his
allegiance to the cause from that day for
ward, and he took pride in the fact that
be bad never missed an election from the
time he was 21 years ofage to the day of
bis death.
Funeral services were held yesterday,
the body being laid to rest in the ceme
tery at East Hickory, Rev. Mr. Richards
of the Evangelical cburoh at Lickingvllle,

An education obtained in a good normal
school fits for life and business, as do
other schools, but its diploma has a pe
culiar legal value that should not be
overlooked; It makes its possessor a le

life.
None of us can look very far into the
future. Your daughter may not need to
leach now, and may lay Iter normal di
ploina away, uevor intending to use it.
But Borne disaster later in lile may make
it necessary for her to earn ber living,

valuable possession. Is it not best to be
educated in a school whose diploma has
such value?

The highest price ever paid for po

It was not u good poem either. James
Smith, one of the authors of "Rejected

night at dinner in London Strachau,
the famous English printer. Stracban,
what with old age and gout, was most
In Arm. Indeed, he rotild hardly walk.
But his mind was exceedingly power

well that Smith on his return home
wrote the following doggerel nbout the

Your lower limbs seemed far from stout
When last 1 saw you walk;
The cause I presently found out
When you began to talk.
The power thut props the body's strength
