COMING COAL CONFERENCE. Mr. Mitchell Arranging Statistics of Hard Coal Industry. " New York, Feb. 13. President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers of America, who arrived here Sunday night to prepare for the conference on Thursday between the mine work ers of the anthracite region and their employers, spent the duy arranging his program for the meeting. The miners' president brought with him from Indianapolis a large trunk filled with documents and statistics re lating to the hard coal Industry In Pennsylvania, which he will use at the conference. He remained In his room at the Ashland House practically till day and 'had no visitors of any prominence. Mr. Mitchell declined to discuss the anthracite coal situation so far as It related to the miners' union in ad vance of the meeting with the opera tors. Neither would he talk of the conditions in the West. He is keep ing in close touch with the situation In the various bituminous coal fields and receives reports by telephone and telegraph. Mr. Mitchell was in conference last night with the presidents of the three anthracite districts, Messrs. T. D. NIchoIls, William H. Dettrey and John Fahy, who will take up most of his time between now and Thursday in the work of perfecting the demands or propositions to be laid before the mine operators. The outlines of those demands were drafted by the three executive boards of the hard coal fields at a series of meetings held last week at Wilkes barre.. These demands have not leen made public. Philadelphia and Reading Coal ' and Iron company will be here today and it is understood will meet some of the officers of some other coal carrying roads. Brooks' New Comet. Geneva, N. Y., Feb. 13. Dr. William Brooks, director of Smith Observatory, stated that his new comet is now with in one degree of the north celestial pole, having reached Its highest de clination north and is moving south westerly. On Feb. 1G the comet will be on the upper part of the neck of Camelopardalis; on Feb. 20th on the middle of the neck between the head and breast; on Feb. 24th on the breast of that constellation and In right as cension bIx hours 17 minutes, declina tion north 74 degrees 35 minutes.
