Catherine Elizabeth Gillespie, wife of the late C. F. Gillespie, was born in Hamburg, Qermioy, Aug. 27, If 35, and died on Whig Hill, Pa , March 1!7, 1!H)4, aged 68 years and seven months. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Dorothy Zuendel, who came to Amer ica in 1S40, and resided for a short time in Pittsburg, Pa., then came to Tiouesta, and then settled on German Hill on tbe Ktsor farm, moving from there to Falrvlew, Erie County, Pa., where they died. Henry Zuendel's family consisted of three sons and three daughters, namely : Conrad, of Falrvlew, Erie county, Pa.; Vdam and the lata Henry of Starr, Pa.j Mrs. Wm. White, of Delphos, Kansas; Mrs. A. B. Hoot, of Ostrander, Wash., and Catberiue E., sub ject of this sketch. Ia tbe year 1814, Cath erine went to live with her Jslstor, Mrs. White, in Sheffield, Pa. Tba only way to reach tbe place was by canoe from Nebraa ka. While at Sheffield she attended school. Mr. White and family returned to Jug Handle, where Catherine continued to re side until Sept. 22, 18":t, when she waa married to C. F. Gillespie, in Titusville, Pa., by a Mr. Chase, Justice of the Peace, in the presence of Wm. Hood, of Tionesta, and Sarah Martin (now Mrs. J. M. De- woody), of Fanklin, Pa. Six children wero born of this union : Frank, of Union City, Pa.; Hubert Z., of Gallon, O.; Henry E. and Willtira, of Kellettville, Pa., and Fred W. and Cath erine E., wife of Albert Llghtuer. of Whig Hill, Pa. Shortly after her marriage she and her husband weut to housekeeping at Tionesta. Pa. The same year they removed to Ross Run, where her husband had a con tract ot cutting and handling logs, cutting them into lumber, and delivering same to tbe mouth of Ross Run in Tionesta Creek, After residing there twelve years, they went to Whig Hill where they had a farm, and in 1807 built the house in which they lived, and in which they both died. She enjoyed perfect health until March 1st, 18! i9, when she was stricken down at tbe home of ber daughter, Mrs. Lightner, with whom she resided. During the five years of suflering she bore all with patience, and was never known to murmer. It seemed as if she was supported by an nnseen power. Mrs. Gillespie was converted in 18."!, un der the ministry of Rev. DavUI Easton, who was their minister on Tionesta circuit, and united with the M. E. Church, and re mained a faithful member of the sime un til the day of her death. At the time she came to Whig Hill she was the only mem. ber of the M. E. Church there, but she lived to see tbe church of her choice become the leading religious denomination. She was always interested In church work, and was greatly beloved by all old and young. All her children were with her at tbe last At 6 o'clock P. M., Sunday, just aa the sun sank to rest, she smiled into the faces of the children she loved, then looking toward heaven her lips moved in prayer aa did the martyred Stephen, she passed into that celestial city to be with Him who bears all our sorrows. It seemed to as who fol lowed ber to the river that she saw and heard strange things as she stepped Into the valley of death. But what Is this music that falls on her ear. Enchanting her senses, dispelling her fear ; Ud, the angels are with ber, sue is not alone, They are bearing her safely to ber dear Father's home. The husband she loved who has gone before, Is waiting for ber on that beautiful shore. Jesus beckons her to him, she follows bis call, It waa only a little brook after all. She was burled in Riverside Cemetery, Tionesta, Pa., the Wednesday following her death. Rev. F. M. Small, of tbe M. E. Church, officiating. The funeral sermon was preached ia ths M. E.
