Too bad Mr.Rryan cannot have bis sail area measured. It would doubtless re duce bis time allowance. The Presidents earnest insistence for fair play throughout the government ser vice will iusure the support of the Amer ican people. Thkre were two points on whib Gladstone and Salisbury always agreed. Both were High Churchmen and both baled tobacco. A twentieth century Indian chief has discarded the tomahawk for an auto mobile. He wants to murder and still be within the pale of the law. The Hon. Tom I,. Johnson, of Ohio, was nominated for Governor, Wednes day, by acclamation. His defeat will probably be equally unanimous Bli card. . The twenty six years old man, who sought entrance at Annapolis by giving bis age as eighteen, should have tried young ladies' seminary instead of a navel academy. The London Spectator ranks Secretary of State Hay among the "ablest and most successful of living diplomatists." What is the matter with putting Mr. Hay at the head of the list? An American naval officer reports from Hong Kong that the only naval vessels in Asiatic waters which are not fitted with wireless telegraphy apparatus are the American and Chinese ships. The report that the President was con ducting an investigation of the relation between union and nou-union labor in all the executive departments indicates bis determination to treat all laborers with equal fairness. The Puget Sound salmon crop is re ported to be a total failure. The poor man will have to live on apples, of which the United States has raised a little over a half barrel for every man, woman and child in the country. Bkkohe leaving Europe, Secretary Root announced that every Important problem which would come up for set tlement before the first of January, by the War Department, emergency prob lems, had been disposed of. Bishop Potter said recently, "You cannot serve your fellow men unless you are willing to touch them." The Bishop evidently has no faith in charity admin istered with a pair of tongs. He does not regard it as "the greatest of these." Judge Taft, who is to be secretary of war, is the son of another Judge Taft who held the same position in the cabinet dur ing Grant's second term. The elder Tatt was also successively minister to Austria and Russia by President Arthur's appointment. Senator Gorman qualities his remarks by adding that he is in favor ol "conser vative tariff reform." He will find it difficult to steer between protection and free trade in a way that will win the con fidence of the advocates of either policy, thinks the Rochester Democrat. Japanese expert cabinet-makers bave turned out a complete model of an Amer ican war ship, complete in that it is sep arable and that it faithfully portrays ev ery detail of the interior, a task which American artisans have never been able to accomplish, and the charge for tLe model was but (110. As an appropriate place for grand In ternational shooting matches, Turkey seems to bave supplante I Sea Girt. There is a Russian fleet in the Black Sea and an English fleet in the Mediterranean and Turkey lies between them. The fleets should blaze away and bag a Thanksgiving dinner that would be pal aiable to the whole world. At last a m ilo bus been trotted in two minutes. By a great burst of speod on the last quarter the mare Lou Dillon not only broke the world's record last Thurs day, but accomplislied it by the astonish ing margin of two and a quarter seconds, the previous best record, that of Cresceus, being a mile in 2:021, trotted at Columbus, Ohl, two years ago. Before 1H."(), when Flora Temple surprised horse experts by trotting a mile in 2:1W, ihe swilit trot ters were not expected to get over lue track in less than 2:.'t0. The best time of Maude S. was 2:0sJ in lk8.1, Cresceus made his record in 19tU, and no one ex pected to tee it red ui;ed to the hoped-for 2.-00 at a stroke. Of course, there is a lim it, but no one ran guess how far below the 2:(i0 mark it will eventually rest. What is the United States coming to? A newspaper in Rutland, Vermont, re cites the fact that within five weeks there have been five cases of felonious assault on little girl and adds, ''A lynching or two in this State would not only be no disgrace, but would be the removal of disgrace." But some times felonious as saults are not felonious assaults. Chairman Hall, of the Democratic State Committee has apparently pot rid of the terrifying apparition of ex-Representative George R. Dixon as a candidate for Stale Treasurer. Mr. Dixon'isa Dem ocrat with some really excellent attribu tes and by all odds the ablest represent iveofthn pirty Elk County has turnod out iu many years but be does not live in Benzinger Township and therefore can not expect to be In politics rhila Press. In 18.10 the value of manufactured pro ducts in the United States was, in round terms, one billion dollars; in 1!W0 it was over thirteen billions. The noteworthy feature ot this tremendous growth is that it occurred in defiance of the prediction of the Cohdenites, who declared that our efforts to create a great manufacturing in dustry in defiance of what they were pleased to call natural laws must inevi tably result in failure. According to Corp. Tanner, all that the Democrat lo party will nominate a ticket for in 1!'04 is to keep up its organization. It looks that way. No Democrat of any sense believes that his party will win next year, but many Democrats look for their party to win some time. It Is nec essary for the party to keep its machinery in action all the time, however dark may ba the immediate outlook. It would seem, however, that Democrats who ex pect to have a future should take care to keep their names out of the convention of 1904. The bookbinders' union has tiled its charges against William Miller, their ex pelled member who was reinstated by order of the president. The burthen of the charges is that Miller was illegally married some twenty-five years ago and, although he has lived happily with bis wife every since, it is claimed that he cannot, therefore, properly bind books. As Hamlet sayeth, "Treat a man accord ing to bis deserts and who would escape hanging", and Kipling sayeth, "We are all of us liars, are bait of us thieves, and the rest of us are as rank as can be". Tuerv is no better evidence of the real intention of the Republican party to carry out its pledges, than the fact that the new ballot to be used in voting this fall is a decided improvement ovor any other yet adopted. The first advantage is that it is much smaller than formerly and hence much more convenient to handle in the voting booth. Then it is simpler than former ballots in that the name of a can didal appears but once though be may be the nominee of all the various parties, This featuie does away with the endless confusion to Ihe voter. The new ballot too is a marked approach to the Aus tralian system for which our Democratio friends bave been clamoring so loudly and long, in that the old plan of party columns has been entirely abandoned, and In its place has been sudstituted the grouping of the various offices to be filled and the names of the candidates there for. The RniJ on Impure Food. If Dairy and Food Commissioner War ren will stick to the text much good will come ot the splendid raid be has inagu rated against all tonus of adulteration in food products it will soon be that man kind in this State will be able to purchase the ordinary necessaries of life without fear of being poisoned to death. The un earthing of such poisons as formaldehyde (embalming fluid) in milk, meats and other commodities is a revelation that should set people to thinking, and think ing with a vengeance. The punishment for such damnable practice is far to in significant and should be increased. Long terms of imprisonment, or capital punishment If you please, should be the reward of those who would thus place the lives of innocent people in jeopardy that a few paltry dollars may be put in the pockets or the skinflint dealers or pro ducers. A dispatch fro n Harrisburg under date of 30th nit.. Rays : Dairy and Food Commissioner Warren received to-day chemists' reports on 21 articles of food and drink. Nine milk samples were from these towns in Allegheny county : Allegheny, Braddock, Darlington, Du qtiesneand McKeesport. Six coutained formaldehyde, one boric acid and two bad been liberally watered. One sample ol hainburg steak, bought In Allegheny county, was "dosed" with sulphurites and colored with analyne dye. Eleven samples of blackberry brandy, black berry juices and blackberry wine were all found to contain a coal-tar dye. These liquor samples were purchased from dealeis In Erie, Shaion, Johnson burg and Oil City. Twenty-one prose cutions were ordered to-dav on the above named samples. These suits make a to tal of 200 prosecutions for the month of August. Another dispatch from Punxsutawney states that as a result of an Investigation conducted by Pure Food Inspector Foust, of Altoona, last week, one firm olmilk dealers in Ibis place was fined $112. The product of two other retailers was found to contain formaldehyde. The alarming death rate among children during the summer months led to the investigation, one undertaking firm having buried 11 children in 11 days recently. Adults who were feeding on a milk diet were also affected. When the inspector left here last night be sad that the investi gation had not been complete. What punishment would be too great for such heinous work as is here do picted. State ok Ohio, City ok Toledo, ) Luciim Countv, ( Frank J. Son of a Former Mayor of Troy Worked at City Hospital. Philadelphia, Aus. 31. Following his tragic death on Saturday nisht last by being crushed beneath a Market street trolley car," a romantic story has come forth concerning Thomas B Carroll. Son of a former mayor of Troy, N. Y., and a man who once' possessed a fortune and lost it, and whose sister Is reputed to be one of the wealthiest women of Troy, Carroll had for years, without the knowledge of his friends at home, filled a humble position at the Philadelphia hospital. With his money gone and the au thorities unable to communicate 'with his sister, who is absent from Troy on a tr'p, the man's body was destined for burial in Potter's field, and his re mains would have gone there but for his former comrades at the hospital, who have arranged to defray the ex pense? of a decent funeral. Carroll kept the history of hia early career and misfortune- a secret as far as his fellow employes at the hospital were concerned, and It was only by mere chance that It was learned that he came from Troy. A letter was sent to that city by Chief Clerk James Wood row of the coroner's office and word came hack that the nran's sister, Mrs. W. H. Van Every, was away trav eling and that her whereabouts were unknown. . The coroner decided to have the man's body Interred In the Potter's field, and Just as the grave was being prepared, one of Carroll's workmen at the hospital appeared and faved the remains from a pauper's burial.
