A meeting of tl.e Kepublican County Committee or Forest County will be held Rt the Court House, TioneNta, Monday events, Feb. 23, 1903, at 7:30 o'clock. All members are requested to be present.. Wm. G. Morkow, Chairman. HAYS WINS IN rlTTfiBl'RG. The election in Pittsburg yesterday, the hottest in years, resulted in the elec tion of Wm, H. Hays, the fusion Citizens Democrat candidate for Recorder, by from 5.000 to 7,000 majority. Wyman, Citizens-Pent, was elected in Allegheny City. Congress baa demonstrated ls faith in President Roosevelt's leadership. A peaceful and satisfactory outcome of the Venezuelan situation is now se cured. A smokeless locomotive is the latest triumph of an American inventor. The Ship Subidy bill will not be pass ed at this session. Over 27,000.000 tons of ore were brought out of the Lake Superior region by lake transportation last year. President Roosevelt saysbe is much pleased wilb the anti-trust legislation ac complished at this session ol Congress. Canada is reported to he arranging a plan of border defense. It needs a high order of military genius to enable 5,000, 000 people to close all the doors against 7t,0 10,000. The United States produces nine tenths of the world's cott 'ii, oi.e-half its coal and copper and one-fourth its iron. These industries have been developed by the protective policy. Richard Olnev, Democratic candi date for the presidency. A corporation lawyer to lead to victory the great anti corporation party. Shades of Thomas Jef ferson, (and Mr. Bryan.) The passage of effective anti-trust leg islation has caused havoc in the predic tion departments of many Democratic newspapers. '1 be Republican party sel dom fails to do havoc there. Occasionally it has been said that the United .States spends too much uvney on naval construction. The remark was not indulged in at the beginning oi the war with Spain nor is it heard now. The perfection of the Republican or ganization in the Senate was never bet ter demonstrated thau by the accomplish ment ot three excellent anti-trust bills in the face of the Statehood blockade. British pottery works employ 25,000 women and children. Americau pottery works pay living wages to the fathers and the women are free to raise their fam ilies and the children to attend school. The Monroe doctrine means, among other things, that Europe can save itself humiliation and vast number ol millions by relenqtiisbing forever the idea of seiz ing a single inch of American territory. A Goon deal of American money will go into the isthmian canal, but much of it will be spent for American material and expert labor. The digging of the canal will decidedly assist to maintain prosperity. Carroll D. Wrio.it, commissioner of labor, is quoted as saying that the wages now pai l in the United Stales are higher than ever before In the history of the country. The highest level, up to the present time, he says, was made in 1892. When asked if he Is a candidatn for third term, Mr. Cleveland replies: "I can not possibly bring my mind to the belief that a condition or sentiment exists that makes any expression from ine on the subject of the lost importance." In other words if anything should1 be done in that direction he'd be sorry for, he'd be glad of it. The surcharge ol the late Commission ers of Clearfield county in the sum of j io looks very small when compared to the surcharge nl tl5,43o Hgainst the com missioners of York county, who were overtaken In crooked work. The ex oountv treasurer of that county is also t l,fi.r3 in arrears, and the tax payers are hunting Bfter the money. Clarion Dem ocrat. You must remember that York is a strongly Democratic county and the din- crepancy would naturally be much larger on that account. The policy of protection is the founda tion ot our whole industrial system. Nine-tenths of our industrial capital is invested, nine-tenths of our industrial wage scales and other arrangements are made, upon tha supposition that this na tion will continue by law to reserve the home market for borne producers. To begin to repeal the tariff would be to dis turb all these arrangements. It would unsettle business. It would destroy com mercial confidence in the future. It w ould bring on bard times. That is what taritl tinkering by the Democratic party has always done in the past. That is wl.nt it certainly will do again. We. Th.Fr. Ill 11 1213 18 19 20 25 26 27 1 Of our uew governor the Pittsburg Dispatch baa this correct "pen picture" from its Harrisbnrg writer: "Gov. Pennypacker is commanding more respect among lawyer and the de partment bends under him each day. They bavt ascertained that while he has whims and peculiar manners, beneath bia plain and simple demeanor be has courteous manner and a substantial busi ness brain full of logic and legal under standing; also that be baa a mind abso lutely bis own, combined with a rare fao ulty 01 doing lliiniss for himself, which renders bis judgment doubly valuable. It Pennypacker loves historical research, he is also fond af explorations iu other channel-. lie pours over the records of his ofllce with the same intense interest that he exhibits when wading into the history of the past. His attention to bus iness and close scrutiny to every detail has resulted in some wonderful finds. There is much criticism over the stand taken by the Governor In the Charter cases, but thinking lawyers of the State declare that, while bis act might have the tendency to deprive the State of some business, it will prevent a heap of bunco and at the same time increase the reve nues. Pennypacker is sure that bis stand is right in the matter. The fact that he was not influenced ty the arguments of the corporation lawyer shows that he has rare confidence in his own opinions." JrrxiE Simonton, one of the ablest common pleas judges in the State, died at ilarrisburgon the 12th Inst., at the age of seventy-seven years. During bis long career on the bench in Dauphin county be has been called upon to decide many of the questions of general interest throughout the Commonwealth, and bis opinions have been noted for conspicu ous care aud and ability iu their prepara tion. Duty. There is nothing really worth while but duty. Do that which you ought to do, no ma ter what the consequences may be, and ninety-nine times out of a hundred it will turn out to be a source of pleasure and gratification and pride. If people could but realize the fearful cost of doing wrong they would no more think of de liberately transgressing moral laws than of defying the laws of gravitation in an attempt to fly over Niagara Falls. What la duty? It is to fulfill in the highest sense, promptly, faithfully and grandly, your obligations to your fellow man. Every duty performed widens our hor riznn and opens the windowa of the soul, letting in the light of truths and ulesaings otherwise forever unknown. Tbo good man scorns all warnings, all ideal of self-interest, all allurements, that would deter him from duty. Do not look abroad for grand and spectacular duties but do the humble things that appear to your band. "Let them laugh if they will when you sacrifice desire to duty," says Theodore Parker, "you have time aud eternity to rejoice in. Who escapes duty avoids a gain." Doing good increas es your power of doing more good, and there is nothing else in the world that satisfies the soul. When a man resorts to miserable make shifts and petty excuses about "enjoying life," and "taking things easy," in order to evade duty, he is only making him self unhappy and contemptible. The best criterion of duty, and one that the wayfaring man, though a fool, may al ways understand, is to "do as you would be done by." Punx'y Spirit. The tendency of medical s -ience is to ward preventive measures. The best thought of the world is being givrn to the subject. It is easier and hotter to prevent than to cure. It has been lully demonstrated that pneumonia, one of tbe most dangerous diseases that medical men have to contend with, can be pre vented ty tbe use of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. Pneumonia alwavs re sults from a cold or from an attack of in fluenza (grip), and it has been observed that this remedy counteracts any tendency of these diseases toward pneumonia. This has been fully proven in many thous ands of cases in which this remedy ban been used during tbe great prevalence of colds and grip in recent years, and can be relied upon with implicit confidence. Pneumunia often results from a light cold when no danger is apprehended un til it is suddenly discovered that there is fever and difficulty in breathing and pains in tbe che-t, then it is announced that the patient has pneumonia. Be on the safe side and take Chamberlain's Cough Remedy as soon as the cold is con trcted. It alwavs cures. Hold bv Dunn. Tionesta, W. O. Wilkins, West Hickory. Fewer gallons; Wears longer. 'Secretary Shaw Hat Asked Mr. Ship ley to Give It Up. Philadelphia, Feb. 1C When the old mint in this city was sold, Samuel R Shipley, president of the Provident I lie and Trust company of this city, a member of an old Quaker family, bought tilie corner stone. Now Wash ington has awakened to the relic's his torical value- and has practically de manded it through Secretary Shaw foi the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Shipley said: "I have acquired the title to It. I bought It and paid for It. I was Interested In the pur chase of the mint and after we bought it all ethers interested agreed that 1 9hould hare the corn r stone. I shall not resist the government." The corner stone, by the way, has not been found although the mint has been levelled to the ground. Where It has gone Is a mystery. Change River' Course. New Castle, Pa., Feb. 16. The Penn sylvania Railroad company has begun the gigantic undertaking of changing the course of the Mahoning river near Carbon, six miles we"st of this city, in order to eliminate a long curve. Near Carbon the cut will be nearly half n mile In length, and the public road on the other side of the Mahoning will also have to be changed. Other cuts will also be made between here and Yt ungstown in the line with the gen eral Improvement of transportation fa cilities. When the curves are elim inated the running time and drawing power of loccmotlvt's will be far su nerior to those? at present. Stock la Active. Oil City. Feb. 16. The continued strength in the stcck of the Manufac turers Lig'U and Htnt company, cul minating in the sensational advance on the Pittsburg Stock Exchange, evoked considerable interest In this city and quotations from Tlttsbttrg were eagerly watched. These close to the directors predict the stcck will sell above 100. They say the purchase of the Wheeling Gas company, In the affairs of whlrt the late Wesley Chambers of this city was a prominent factor, and the com pletion of the proposed $3,000,000 pipe line to West Virginia make the Manu facturers position impregnable.
