Building Wrecked and a Score of
People Badly Injured.
Marlon, Ind., May 6. A building in
South Branson street, occupied by
Fanster's drug store. Rowan's Rrore
ry, John llllday's saloon, John Dar
nell's saloon and Hudson & Otis' res
taurant, was demolished by natural gas
yesterday, Injuring at least a score of
people. A number are badly Injured.
The building was entirely demolish
ed and the loss will reach Into the
thousands. Escaping natural gas Is
supposed to have caused the explo
sion. So far as known none was killed.
Loss on building will reach $35.0fl.

driving was standing in front of the
building when the explosion occurred
The wagon was demolished and young
Stevens was seriously Injured.

After Beef Combine.
Washington. May 6. S. H. Bethea,
United States Attorney at Chicago,
and W. A. Day, special assistant at
torney, are In the city. Yesterday
they conferred with Attorne.y-Gineral
Knox on the subject of the beef com
bine. Mr. Day presented to the at
torney-general the text of a bill In
equity which they had prepared. This
was carfully gone over. The attorney-
general has revised the bill In a num
ber of Important particulars and It Is
now expected It will be sent to Chi
cago some time during the present
week to be filed In the office of the
clerk of the T'nited States court there.
After the bill has been filed it will be
made public.
Saw "Water Cure" Administered.
Washington. May 6. The Senate
Philinnine committee heard D. J. Ev
ans, formerly a private In the Twelfth
Infantry. He testified to seeing the
"water cure" administered to two In
snrgents In Northern Luzon to compel
them to give Information about con
cealed arms. The Information was ob
tained. He said that he saw Private
Frank Koehler of the regiment strike
a "water cure" victim In the stomach
40 tlme. Aside from the "water
cure" the prisoners were treated ho.
