platform as follows: I believe that the

Tiik application of the national anti
trust law to the abuses alleged against the
combination of business Institutions com
posing the meat trust will naturally re
sult in an important judicial interpreta
tion of the law. This is very much to be
desired- Of the methods pursued bv the
packers interested in tho combination, it
is said they Lave for years been carrying
ou the meat industry by means of an
agreement which under the law is con
spiracy, punishable by liuo and impris
onment, but are now in a fair way ot be
ing brought to book by the Department
of Justice. The process is a little slow,
because it is impossible to prove con
spiracy w ithout a mass of testimony that
is usually only circumstantial. In the
proseut case there is some direct testi
mony from the former employes ol the
trust, as well as documents which go to
prove the government's content on. The
action biought uuder the so-cailcd
Sherman act, which punishes any at
tempt arbitrarily to increase the cost of
the neossRi iis of lire by conceited action,
which is called conspiracy. There is no
one great corporation handling meat.
The trust is comp sed of six principal
corporations, independently operated and
yet working in that "harmony ol inter
est" which divides up the country into
spheres of influence and provides lor fix
ed prices which must bo charged by all
under penalty. This is the conspiracy in
question, and apparently the government
is having no trouble, in preparing its caa-.
