Selling
Wall Paper
at Dry Goods Prices.
. , I
., Do you realize what this means! Do .you know that
this department store system of ours brings the cost of all grades
of wall paper down to half what the regular stores charge I
This may seem like an exaggeration, were we not able
to back it up. We are the largest buyers of wall paper within
a radius of 100 miles. We buy cheaper than most dealers and
by selling at our department store basis of profit we can under
sell our competitors fully 50 percent.
If you have any papering to do this spring. it will pay
yoWto run' down and get our prices. We pay railroad fare on
t all purchases of 10 or over, so you can trade here without ex-
tra expense, and save enough to pay for your time thrice over.
To.Encourage Early Buying We Are .

AJtbough the Imitation of jewels baa
taen practiced for a century or more
thaw are comparatively now develop
ments in the industry every few years,
and the business has of late attained
enormous proportions. The majority of
these atones are made abroad, and hence
they are imported. But while tliey are
exceedingly cheap and the duty is low
the attempt i occasionally made to simitr
gle them into the country, and U seizure
result. Again, the imitation is some
times so good that even the cuntoms offi
cers are puiilrd for a time. However, it
is aWays possible for an expert to tell
Ike difference If he has sutlicient oppor-
' tunityto apply the proper tests.
Imitations of the diamond, topnz, emer
ald, amethyst and tuniuoiw are usually
made of paste or stress, which is nothing
more than a particularly fine grade of
glass, to which, if the stone is colored,
the proper hue has been imparted by tuo
addition to some mineral substance.
There is at least one European house,
though, which professes to add carbon tn
ita diamond Composition, thus seenrine
greater bardnesa than would otherwise
' be possible.
In London still another plan is pursued
.to improve the psste diamond, Genuine
diamond dust, produced by the cutting
f Jewels," to' treated with acid, reduced
to a plastic state and then rolled out in
exceedingly thin sheets. This Teneer
it cut into the proper ahape and cenient
l on the faces of the straps. Class diu
juanda can be bought for a few ceuts
when onset, but a veneered diamond is
worth nearly f 1. A high degree of skill
to required in its preparation.
.There are several methods of distin
guishing between a true diamond and
paste. Hydrofluoric acid will eat glass,
liat will not affect the genuine stone. A
Sle make no impression on the latter
cither. Finally a real diamond contin
ues to glitter when immersed in water.
Hone artificial rubies are of paste; oth
er have the same composition as the
graaine stone, which consists of eorun
awn. The latter variety of imitation
nby has the proper hardness and spe
cific gravity, and the color is faultless.
It can be distinguished from the true
ruby only- by a powerful magnifying
grass. Bingnlarly enough, the genuine
article Is identified by its defects. There
re natural flaws in it not found in the
imitation, although the imitation also
possesses other characteristics (minute
bubbles, for instance) which are readily
recognised. On some stones, like the
topas and emerald, it is not wise to use
a file. Tbey are not hard enough to re
aist kt The magnifying glass is the sur
est means of ascertaining the character
of these Jewels.
,. Owing no doubt to the fact that pearls
are often worn In strings instead of sin
gly or in pairs, like diamonds, the busi
ness of manufacturing imitations of them
'hi 'far more extensive than any kindred
branch of the industry, except perhaps
pie making' at bogus turquoises aud eui
tlWU'and rubies for belt buckles. And
inasmuch as most of these imitation
pearls are exceedingly cheap It is pnosi
rlc for anybody to buy them. Thus one
may get a card bearing a dosen stickpins
with imitation pearl beads for front 1')
to 15 cents. If the stones were genuine,
the wnnld ho worth from f 100 to fliOO.

.There nrc several kinds. of imitation
pearls. One is a glass bead filled with
composition. The tfluss is often not over
a sixty-fourth of an inch thick. There
are several different compositions used.
One looks very much like pa ratlin. A
bead filled with that material would
crush easily. In other globular .pearls,
pierced for stringing, a harder substance
is employed. There is an Imported imita
tion penrl whose shell is said to be made
of fishskin and whose filling is a com
pound in which there is ground mother of
pearl, the lustrous lining of the oyster
shell, wherein the real earl Is produced.
This sort of jewel costs a dollar or two,
and a string of (10 would sell for $150.
Ileal pearls of the same size. and lienuty
would brag fully a hundred times that
price.
Although the manufacture of imitation
pearls was long confined to Kurope, it is
now conducted in this country also. A
New York bouse, the first to engage in
the busiuess, introduced a norelty to the
trade a few years ago. It made solid
pearls In addition to tue filled oues.. The
composition employed is as hard as rock.
It is almost impossible to break these
jewels, and their luster, color and ingen
ious Irregularity of form will deceive any
one who does not use a mnguifying k!:iss
on theia. The head of this house tells
many amusing stories about the mistakes
made by expert jewelers and pawnbro
kers when these st )iies firs! made their
appearance. Of course it is not easy to
fool an experienced person: still the ex
pert must use a powerful lens in order to
ascertain the real character of a pearl.
He will not trust the naked eye. Occa
sionally a Jeweler will say: "No. I cannot
detect an imitation pearl eight or ten
feet away, but if I hold it in my hand I
can see the difference- between that and
the real thing. There's a sort of halo
around the genuine article which' is un
mistakable." Hut other men in the
trade frankly admit thut only by means
of a microscope can they discriminate.
A fashion lias spruuit up of lute years
which enhances the deception produced
by imitation jewels. If a pate diamond
is set in a brass ring or an imitation pearl
is mounted on a Cemian silver pin, a
sharp eyed observer might suspect the
vharacter of the jewel but when the set
ting is of 1-i carat or 18 carat gold and
the manufacturer has lavished more or
less artistic skill on the design of a ring
or stud or clasp a different impression is
crenti-d.
Wli-n one first gits an Idea of the
enormous extent to which imitation jew
els are sold ami worn, he naturally won
ders whether the trade in genuine stones
has been ufTectcil. Hut a little inquiry in
the proper ciunitcr will satisfy him that
it has not. The former are purchased by
a class of people who c:'.nuot afford the
