Thrkk former mistresses of the White House are now resi ling in Washington Mr. Latitia Tylor Semple, daughter of President Tvler; Mis. Harriet Ijine Johnson, reice of James Huchanau, and Mn. Ulvsis S. Grant. Two pictures to look on is a suggestion of thi- Indianapolis Journal. The last Democratic Secretary of the Treasury was compelled to sell bonds lo meet the cur rent expenses of the Government. Secre tary Gage is purchasing bonds to keep down Lie Treasury surplus. Ok w hat earthly use are any more Dem ocratic promises to the people? Repub lican proinisrs of what would result from the operation of Republican policies hare all been fulfilled, and all the Democratic prophecies on the same subject have failed dism.lly. The Democrats prophet naturally belongs to the collection of plav wagons ami dolls In the barn loft of political oblivion. Thki.k have been so many Injuries as to the pronunciation of the nanieof Presi dent Koosevell that the authentic pronuu niatiou will be of Interest to many people, The name is composed of three syllables and is pronounced as if spelled Rose-a-velt, with the accent on the first syllable, Practically the same sound is obtained by spelling the name Ro-sie-velt, with the accent on the first syllable. Assis taut Secretary Loeb said a few days ago that he has been asked a thousand times as to the pronunciation. Probably the majority of the people pronounce the inline with the tound of the two o's, but this is incorrect. Is the recent drubbing which the peo plo of Philadelphia gave to the lake re formers the Inquirer of that city merits a large share of credit. That stalwart jour nal stood firmly, single handed and alone against the seven subsidised papers of that city, and fought the great battle of Republicanism and decency, winning out by a crushing majority. The people have become so accustomed to '-Editorial Page of the Wanainaker Store," that thev put absolutely no confidence in the daily harangue of the editorial writers, know, ing how completely they are controlled by the ) age advertisements. The people of Philadelphia are to be congratulated on having at least one unpurchaseable papt-r tnat can be relied upon. At last week's elections the Repub licans won by lare majorities in Ohio, Massacbiise'ts, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and in Bryan's own state of Nebraska, which was carried by upward of 10,000. New York City elect ed Si-th Low, Republican, mayor by over 40,000, the Republicans carrying their entire ticket. In Maryland the Kepublicans elected a majority of the re presentatives in the legislature while the Democrats carried the house of Dele gates, giving them a" apparent majority on joint ballot. The iniquitous new ballot law, engineered by Gorman, Is re sponsible for the defeat of the Republi cans, and thev will doubtless be able to overthrow Uormanism fraud by seating enough representatives to carry the elec tion of a V. S Senator on joint ballot. The People Aligner slanderers. Oho of those truckling organs of Wana makerism savs that "reform baa won in New York. It has been beaten In Phila delphia." Let us say to our newspaper friend de pendant on Wanamakerism for its bread and butter that the people of Philadel phia by a majority of 43,000 have ex pressed Ihoir ideas of reform. Thev bave been unable to discover even the slightest glimmer of reform in the movement to discredit and defame Philadelphia and they bave said so at the polls. If ihe defenders are wise they will quit their assaults and join the procession enterprising Pbiladelphiana in Hie grand inarch for prog-ess. It will not be forgotten that one of the charges br nght against the Republican Legislature was the "crime" of giving Pittsburg a new city charter. Kvery assailant of the Republican party declared that the people of Pitts burg were being throttled : that the right of self government was being taken from them, and all that. The legislature was lampooned and harpooned and was held up to the public ga.e as a boss-ridden or ganization opposed to popular rule. No doubt such campaign charges had an oll'eot among citizens ol Pennsylvania w ho did not understand the legislation tut the test of its value or of its unrigbf ooustiess naturally lay in the hands of the people of Pittsburg themselves. They were the judges, for they alone were af fected. And bow have they answered the Fu sion assailants? By giving an over whelming majority for the Republican State ticket. They have Indorsed the leg islation in an unprecedented manner, and what is more, they have grandly ral lied to the support of their townsman Justii-e Potter. They have repudiated his alanderers. A Pretly Sensible View or It. In spite of our dreams of universal peace and the complete brotherhood of man, we cannot help feeling now and then that war is the onlv regenerator of nations. What will lilt Turkey from her degredation but lire and sword ? She is sunk in Infamy, cruelty mid superstition, and left to hersol' can never extricat. herself from the in ire. She is also con stantly committing outrages on the subjects of oilier nations.aiid answering their protests with insolence. Would it not be a good thing is It not the duty of the civilized world to cleanso this sink of Iniquity, make it wholesome an 1 start its polluted people on the way to moral progress? The Sultan,' unless grossly misrepresented, Is the prototype ol all that is vicious and pernicious iu morals and government. 11 is palace is a ne-t of iniquity and the seat of the most oll'cn sive tyranny. He is an international highwayman, and the subjects of no Christian uation are secure in bis do mains. What are war ships good for if not to chastise such creatures and enforce obedience to the common laws ofunliouul decency ? Punxy Spirit. All three of the propo ed amendments to the constitution were car red In ths Stato by uecisive msjoritie although the aggregate vote shows that less than one- third the vote was cast on these questions that were given the State candidates, the people eviden.ly being undic-ded as to the advisability of the adoption of the changes which the amendments seek to bring about. These amendments are now a part of the organic law, and it now tests with the legislature to pass the proper legislation making them, effectual. If voting machines are adopted, as the third amendment permits, there will doubtless be "a howl in Rome" w hen the expense accounts are footed up, for they will bo nothing short of enormous. If personal registration for the entire State should le required there would be an other big kick, for it is difficult already to get 'he qualified electors out to the polls, say nothing about compeling them to personally visit the assessor at the polling place to bave their names regis tered. President Roosevelt pays another sincere tribute to his predecessor. The assassination lof President McKinley was Ihe one calam ity of the year for the A merican peo ple. These reasons are apparent to all readers of new spapers, w ho are enable I to compare the conditions ol life in this country with conditions elsewhere, from the published reports, and they oughtto be able to corroborate the pro ted news from their own personal experience, The year has been one of great prosperity audit is gratifv ing to be.ieve that thia proserity w ill continue.
