The Williamspart Sun, that
staunch supporter of Brjaoism two
years ago, is compelled to admit the
milk in the cocoaout in the following
blunt language : "The country has
had two years of the -McKinley ad
ministration and the people are rea
sonably well pleased with a great
deal that has been done during that
time."
Senator Qtay, before leaving for
Florida on a two weeks' trip fur rec
reation and test, had an interview
with President McKinley and Secre
tary Long, and both promised that
one of the proposed new battleships
would be named Pennsylvania, in
honor of the grand old Common
wealth. It is proposed that it be
built, armed and armored in this
State, the steel aud iron to be fur
nished by Pennsylvania manufactur
ers aud the work to be done by Penn
sylvania mechanics.
Some fool reporter at Harrisburg
last week sent to his paper, the Pitts
burg Telegraph, a uumber of names of
Senators and members of the legisla
ture who were about to desert from
the Quay supporters, and among them
appeared the name of Forest county's
representative, Dr. Towler. It per
haps had not dawned on this smart
Alex, that Forest county did not
send a lunk-head nor a nave to the
legislature to be veareJ from a right
course by the yawp of a handful of
assistant Democrats who have no
standing in either of the leading par
ties. Still that wicked editor of the
Steel ton Iteporter goes on noting the
improvement of buines at the I'nn
sylvania Steel Company's works at
that place. "Ninety six new naiuei,"
it says, after recording the fact that
large additional orders are daily be
ing received, "were added to the rolls
this week, and more men are wanted.'-'
Think of that! Not satisfied with
adding uinely-six new hands, the
company asks for more, and will give
them employment at the advanced
rate of wages. What are the croak
ers going to say to that?
The record thus far runs something
like this: The number of men now
employed at the steel works is greater
by seven hundred and eighty five
than in February, 189, and twenty
hundred and three greater than in
February, 1807 This is without the
ninety-six added last week. What is
the use commenting on facts like
these? J'hilla. Jnjuirer.
umny ol file kiic
have been opposing the Senator are
beginning to refer to him in a cotisid
erably more respectful manner. The
practical admission by the prosicu
tion, in the request for postponement
of the trial, that they had no impor
taut evidence, coupUd with the
forced retraction by a Philadelphia
paper of a manufactured lie concern
ing a juror, has probably bad much
to do with convincing decent people
that it is time to let up a little
Meadville Tribune.
The biennial statement is ugain
on deck to thu effect that the legisla
ture must make a cut on the State
school appropriation in order to keep
the expenses within the range of rev
enues. This is a chestuut which
seem to cet ripe for cracking at
every legislative period. Hut it win'l
happeu. The legislature which should
bring about such a contingency might
about as well be in hades as Harris
burg. It is often brought up as an
argument in favor oi a cut on the
school appropriation that Pennsylva
nia appropriates more than double as
much for th's purpose than most ev
ery other State, and almost doubly
as much as the great State of New
York. Tiue enough But if our
legislature will give us the same priv
ilege enjoyed by that State of allow,
ing corporations to be taxed locally
for school uml other purposes, then
we could favor a cut in the common
school appropriation, and a big one,
too, and still come out away ahead.
Until that is done there must bo do
out on this magnificent appropriation.
Serious business.
