Kingston, Jamaica, Juoe 7 News hat bceo received here confirming tba report from Tort Autonio yesterday of the sinking of the Spanish torpedo boat destroyer Terror, (Furor) by the United States battleship Oregon. It appears that the battleship Oregon saw a lung craft sneaking close to the shore heading toward the harbor. She signalled the craft to turn to and the signals were improperly answered, whereupon the Oregon opened fire upon her. A thirtcen inch shell struck the torpedo boat amidships and she unk with all bauds. The vessel is supposed to have bceu the .Spanish torpedo boat destroyer Terror, trying to make her way from Porto Rico into the harbor of Santiago Da Cuba. New Youk, Juuo 7. A special from Kingston, Jamaica, reports that 5,000 United States troops have land ed near Punta Cabresa, a little to the west of Santiago De Cuba, where a junction was effected with General Calixlo Uarcia s array ot 6,W) in surgeuts. It is added that the land ing was effected under cover of a fire from Admiral Sampson's fleet. With the troops were several heavy Beige guns. Cape IIaytien, Hayti, June 7 At 8 o'clock this morning strong cannonading was heard before Port Aguadores. A quarter of an hoar later the noise of the cannonading was greatly iucreased, the firing ev dently proceeding from guns of the largest calibre. BOTTLED AND CORKED. That is the condition into which Admiral Cervera has gotten his fleet iu the harbor of Santiago De Cuba. For some time it has been definitely known to the navy department that the Spanish fleet was is this bottle shaped harbor, and the American squadrons, under Admiral's Sampson and Schley, have kept a close watch that the Spaniard did uot escape. The plan of filling the channel Ij the harbor entrance with debris of some kind or other has been under consid eration for several days, and sinking of worthless vessels was finally de cided upou. The question as to how this bazzardous task should be per formed was fiually solved, when Ad miral Sampson called for volunteers to guid a boat into the channel and ink it. Over 4,000 brave boys im mediately asked to be assigned to that daring feat. Seven raeu were chosen, and under command of Lieut. Ilobson, the merchant vessel Merri- mao steamed into the very face of the land batteries and the guns of the Spanish fleet. When the vessel had reached the proper point the gallant crue of seven cooly turned her cross wise of the chancel and blew her up, leaping themselves into the water to save their lives The men were all picked up, Cer vera going himself for that purpose and Sad 9 prisoners of war, only two being slightly injured. The Spanish Admiral beiog struck by the audac ity and cool bravery of the men, im mediately sent word, under a flag of truce, to Sampson to asure him that the American boys were alive and well. The annals of ancient or mod ern warfare uo not lurnul a more striking example of patristic bravery than is here exhibited. The men had scarcely one chauco in tun thousand for escape from death, am) yet it is said many sheJ fears because they were not permitted to go. Steps have already been taken fr an early ex change for these brave prisoners, and if it costs all the Spanish prisoners we have to get their release we'll sliil be ahead on the deal. The wheat crop is re parted in fine condition, aud the gnldeu fields never deserved the adjective more than at present quotations. RFPUBLICAX STATE CONVENTION. The Republican State Convention which met at Harrisburg last Thurs day did its work promptly, orderly and harmoniously, nominating a ticket whose personcl could not be excelled if the State were raked with a fine tooth comb. This does not mean that it is the unanimous choice of the party which it represents, for that could uot henever has been hut it does mean that better, cleaner or more able men are not to he found in the State. We of the northwest would gladly hare seen our neighbor, Charles W. Stone make the nomina tion, but that does not hinder a cheer ful and oordial endorsement of Cnl. W. A. Stoue of Allegheny, who was the successful candidate, and who, like his principal competitor, Charles V. Stone, made an honorable, open and fair contest far the Domination. C.il. Stone has very many warm per sonal frieuds and admirers iu Foret county, where he has on different oc casions spoken for the cause of Re publicanism and its candidates, and the party in this county will to a man give him loyal support in the fall. General J. P. S. Gobin, Comman- der in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic of this Nation, was unanimously named for Lieutenant Governor; Geut-ral James Y. Latta, another of the gallant defeuders of the Union, was uuopposed for Secre tary of Internal Affairs, ami the. ven erable Republican war-horse, Galusha A. Grow, and the Hon. Samuel A. Davenport, of Erie, were re nominat ed Congrcss at-large. Judge Wil liam V. Porter was Dominated for Supeiior Court Judge by acclamation, thus completing a ticket composed of men whose Republicanism, honesty, capability, and loyalty has never been questioned. Congressman V. C. Arnold of this district made a gamey fight for Con grets at-Large, and received the handsome complement of 148 votes in the convention, only lacking 33 votes to nominate him. Mr. Arnold, as have all the others who were be fore the convention and failed, has expressed his determination to cive hid loyal and heaity support to the ticket nomioatsd, and an old timo victory is predicted for it in the fall Tolstoi cpeaks of patriotism as one of the "dreadul evils." He roust have been making a study of what passes under the name of Spain. In the year 1897 only twenty-four American vessels arrived at Manila, The prospect for a large increase in 1808 is excellent, without counting Dewey. The Spanish people seem to be tired of the war. It is plain that they expected it to opeu with some great feat of Spanish arms instead of a succession of disasters. The Oregon made one continuous run of 4500 knots without stopping her engines. If it becomes necessary to attack Spanish ports the Oregon can be depended on to do her share. England's new battleship Impla cable will cosi $20,000,000 of which $2,000,000 is foi Le; gnns. The na vies of the year 1900 will be a strik ing contrast with those of a century before. Admiral Dewey's fleet is larger by three captured gunboats than it was when it entered Manila Bay After the Monterey and the Charles ton reach him he will be ready to defy the whole navy of Spain. A son of Gen Grant is a Brigadier General, his grandson is an aid to Gen. Fitzhugh Lee, his widow has ac cepted the presidency of the Worn on's National War Relief Association, and his daughter has resumed her Ameri can citizenship. The patriotism of the Grant family can be relied on. President McKinley expresses himself well in his note to the Gettys burg memorial day committee. He dwells upon the reunited sentiment of the country aud on the living princi pies that "abide forever and guide us to a noblur destiuy and stiil greater achievements as a nation." The American people are knit t'gother more closely than ever before, and the President understands and re fleets their high spirit aud patriotism. The Republicans of Clearfield oounty will have an opportunity at their coming primaries to reward faithful, honest, fearless and able of ficial by re-nnminatiog Hon. Frank G. Harris, a member of the last As sembly. Mr. Harris was a new mem ber, hut ability and fairness rapidly brought him to the front as one of the leaders in that body. He looked af ter tho interests of his people with scrupulous care and was always found at his post nf duty. The party will do itself great credit by h.iuorii g him with a ro election to the legisla ture. The riatforni. Following is the platform adopted by the Republican State Convention at Harrisburg Inst week: "First The republican party of Pennsylvania, in convention assem bled, ratifies and reaffirms the doc Irines enunciated in the Republican national platform adopted at St Lou is in 18!(3 and approved by the peo ple at the Ian presidential election. "Second We declare our emphat ic approval of the wise and patriotio course of the President and congress in the present war. We appreciate the high statesmanship which led the President to resort to every honorable means to avert the necessity of war with Spain. We demand a vigorous prosecution of the war to a successful conclusion, and we pledge our earn est support to the President in what ever measures he may deem neces sary. "Third We rejoice with the peo ple of the nation upon the brilliant rcord which the American navy has made in tho present war. The splendid victory of the American lleot under Com modore Pewey at Manila has not been rivaled iu tlie history of naval warfare; and on r people have such confidence in the officers and men of onr navy, that they confidently look forward to equally brilliant victories in Cuban waters. Wo demand that the national government shall, as rapidly as possible, increaso and build up our navy so that we shall be at all times prepared tn moot the necessities of our national defense, to protect our merchant marine and our growing foreign commerce, and with the same object in view we demand that the national gov ernment shall provide adeuato coast de fenses upon our seaboard of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. We congratulate the state upon tho promptness with which Pennsylvania tilled the quota required by the national government with trained and efficient volunteer soldiers. "Fourth The Republicans of Pennsyl vania roam rni their adherance to the doc trine of protection to American indus tries. Two years ago onr mills were closed and our manufacturing, commer cial, agricultural and business interests were prostrated. To-day our mills are opened, labor is given full employment and a general revival of industrial activity promises renewed prosperity in our state We affirm the declaration made in the last Republican national platform in fav or the construction of the Nicaragua canal, and we call on congress to push this work as speedily as possible. We express our gratitude to our senators aud to the congressmen of this state for their efforts in securing such appropriations from the national government as will in sure tho final completion of the improve ments upon tho Ohie, the Allegheny aud the Monongahela rivers. Recoguizing that Western Pennsylvania is destined to become tho manufacturing center of the world, wo demand that congress shall make adequate provision for the con struction of a water-way between the slack-water navigation of the Ohio and its tributaries and the great Lakes, and wa express our cordial approval and pledge our earnest support, of the pro posed canal connecting the Great Lakes with thesoaboard. "We reaffirm the declaration in the platform of the Republican party in this state in 1807 in iaver of the law restrict ing immigration of cheap foreign labor ers who are unwilling and unqualified to assumo the duties of American citizen ship, but who enter into competition with our own workmen. "We heartily and cordially endorse the administration of President McKinley ; the people of Pennsylvania appreciate his patriotism and statesmanship and have implicit confidence in his ability to guide the nation at this time. , "We commend the wise, careful aud efficient administration of the state gov ernment in its varieus departments, and heartily approve of the fidelity with which our stale officials have discharged their duties. " NEWSY NOTES. The borough of Kittanniiig is carrying a debt of $40,000. Says the Chicago Times-Herald : "By ron made 'Cadiz' rhyme with 'ladies,' but if Sampson ever crosses tho Atlantic. he will make 't ryme with 'hades.' " We see it stated that a valuable deposit of ferro-manganese has been discovered on tho Homer, farm near Ueathville, Jefferson county. The mineral is used in tho manufacture of rolled steel and is worth $50 a ton. The present war brings the solution of the tramp question. It is not proposed to enlist all the tarmps into regiments by themselves and they will have to fight to earn their bread or stop some of the Spanish bullets. The Spanish papers aro well posted oa American history. F,l Diario, published at Maiirid, says : "It will no doubt sur prise our readers to loarn that the Yankee President Maggiuley is a naturalized Chinaman, having been born in Canton. A southerner and a soldier of the Con federacy, now living in Iowa, exprossed the sentiment of the South very plainly and tcrsaly the other day when he said : "We couldn't lick the Yankees in 1861, and d d if we'll let any one else lick 'em now." Council Bluffs Nonpariol. The sending of hardtack through the mails home, has become quite a fad. Some quaint inscriptions are written on the army bread and the recipients are preserving them as meinentoos. The 3'oung ladies are decorating them and hanging them in the parlors much to the chagrin of the lovers that remain at home. A lady asked if etiquette riquirod one to knock at tho door of an editor's sanc tum? If you are coming to pay your subscription or bring a nice juicy item of news don't stop to knock but walk right in as if you owned the place. If on the other hand you are on a collecting tour you should make tbo fact known through tli" window and then knock at tho door until the editor opens it. If he does not open it iu an hour call again. Perhaps the funniest features of war il lustrations is furnished in the stirring pictures or naval hattles, as given in the pictoral papors. These thrilling pictures represent the opposing lleots as ranging up closo together and banging away with their mounter guns, while the interven ing 100 feet or so is dense with the cloud of powder smoke. About the nearest that opposing battle ships get to each other is about two miles. lowv bom barded Cavito at double that distance.
