This has beeu the almost invariable ruhp in the past. The party which succeeded at the Presidential election has generally been defeated in the following year. This is not unnatu ral, for the American people are im patient, and generally expect more than can be accomplished. Since the inauguration ofMcKinley, however, the change from panic to prosperity has been q rapid and pronounced that the v'tcrs were satisfied with the result, and the only great difficulty was ia pelting them to go to the polls. In Chip the Republicans have made a clean sweep of all State offices and carried the legislature by a safe in nj or it j oo joint ballot, thus insuring the return of Mark Hanna, the loyal friend of McKinley, to the U. S. Senate. In Maryland the Republicans have not only held the advantage gained last fall, but have added greatly to it, 7 10 17 21 J 12 1 .! 7! 1 .1 7 2, .' 33 5 J 7 . 74 60 . 7i 7 .1 !W, 22 . , 20! What better could bo wished in a year when all was apathy and indifference, and when everybody knew that the Republican candidates were sure winners. A common plu rality of 40,000 or 50,000 would have beeu fully as well as could be expect ed in such a year as this. The Swal low vote appears to have been drawn about equally from both old parties. The doctor's war-cry was a taking one, and the Democratic papers whooped it up for him so lustily that a large percentage of that party de serted and cast their ballots for him. The "organs" hardly intended that their own people should be so charm ed with the music they were playing. The official returns from every county have been received, but not yet published.
