And wheat has passed the dollar mark. Besides, the beauty of it all in, the American farmer has lots of it ti tell. Instead of running three parties this year the I'opocrats find that they must fight three parties, the Republi cans, Populists and gold Democrats. Our exports last motitb were $3G, 845,278 and only 85,45,84!) in July, 18!Hi. The Wilson law was not a success in getting hold of the markets of the world. A HEroitT comes from Rhode Is land that there are not ten mea in the State who are looking for work unsuccessfully. This sort of prosper ity stands at the top. Unlike the leopard, the New York Journal is changing its spots. Last year it was foremost among those who insisted tbat only with free coinage of silver could prosperity ever re turn to the United States. It now publishes a full page of interesting reading showing a highly prosperous stale of affairs in New York and the country generally, aud makes the prediction that this condition will continue. Director Preston of the United Slates tniot estimates that the gold production of 1897 will be in the neighborhood of $340,000,000. There is reasou to believe that there will be a billion dollars more of gold in the world by 1900 than there was when the campaign of 181)6 began. All of which must be highly cheering to the ilverites, especially iu view of the tremendous fall iu the price of the white metal. Ihe evidence accumulates with each day's advices that the long-con tinued depression in financial circles has passed, and thanks to the five years of forced ecououiy and cessa tion of speculation, coupled with to day's abundant harvest at remunera tive prices to the agriculturists, a new prosperity is coming to the people. The railroads urn sharing in the general prosperity which has come to the conn ry since the election of Mc Kinley. The July csrnings of 118 railroads operating !)0,000 miles of road average 4 per cent, higher than July, 1805, and 8J per cent, higher than in 1804. Ihe latest report from Dun't Re view as to improving business are among the most satisfactory yet re corded by that reliable publication. The Review says : "Every city report ing this week notes increase in trade and oearly all bright prospects. The great change in business is empha sized by a multitude of buyers from all parts of the country sod by the heavy purchases they make. The strong rise in stocks, the growth of bank clearings and railroad earnings and the heavy speculations io many products, and most of all iu wheat, have made the week one of surpass ing luterest even to those who best remember the upward rush io 1879." Among the many evideuces of re turning business activity reported by Bradslreet's last issue are the follow ing news items from various parts of the country: The Norwalk Woolen Mills at Norwalk, Conn., have re sumed work, notifying their hun dred's of operatives tbat night work is likely to be required. The Birm ingham, Alabama, Rolling Mills an nounce a resumption of work. The Howard Harrison Iron Company at Bessemer, Ala , has increased its force, and the pipe works at Bessimer have resumed operations. The Providence mine at Scrantoo, Pa., which has lain idle for two years, will resume at once. The Delaware Iron Works at Newcastle, Del., have resumed oper ations, giving employment to 500 persons, aud the wall paper factory at Newark, Del., will soon resume. The Edgemoor Iron Company at Newcas tle, Del., has increased its force. The Nashville, 111., coal miners have re ceivcd an increase in wages of 20 ceuts a ton for miuing coal. The pottery manufacturers in New Jersey have received an agreement to in crease wages of employees. The Southern Railway Company has put me men iu an us simps at wort nine hours a day. The Hutchinson Cole Manufacturing Company of Norfolk, Conn., will resume at once, employ ing 500 operatives. This showing rather savors of something more than a delusion and a snare.
