Democrat yet spoken of for the Pres

secure a delegate outside of his own
State.
- Since the swindle known as filled
cheese made its appearance in this
country the exports of cheese have
declined 40 per cent. The adultera
tion of food is injurious to health
and ruinous to commerce, and it
ought to be stamped out as one of the
worst frauds of the time.
England's differeocswitti 'Venez
uela VilUprJbably be settled by a
email indemnity from the latter coun
try. There was very little to the
controversy outside of Lord Salis
bury's attack on the Monroe doctrine,
and that will be mentioued by biog
raphers as bis greatest mistake.
Senator Quay concedes Major
McKinley 479 delegates sure at the
St. Louis cooventioo, and predicts his
nomination on first ballot. When the
Senator makes that kind of a predic
tion, set it down that it will happen,
lie also thinks the Pennsylvania plat
form sound enough for the National
conventioo to stand upon.
The national convention of the
Prohibition party, which met in Pitts
burg last week was a stormy gather
ing indeed, and finally split on the
financial rock. The platform adopted
is what is known as the narrow-gauge
kind, embracing simply prohibition,
and this did not suit the broad
gaugers, and they walked out of the
convention. Joshua Levering of Bal
timore was nominated for President,
and Hale Johnson for Vice President.
Boss Harrity talked nonsense
last week when he told a New York
reporter that if McKinley is nomi
nated by the Republicans the Demo
crats will carry New York, Indiana,
New Jersey and Connecticut. The
Democratic candidate against Mc
Kinley this year will do well if he
carries four Southern states, and no
body knows that better than Mr.
Harrity. With McKinley as the
candidate of the Republicans there
will be a sweep politically such as
this country never saw before, and
Mr. Harrity knows that, too.
An immigration bill, a modifica
tion of the Stone bill, passed tbe
lower bouse of Congress last Wednes
day. The bill excludes all persons
between the ages of 16 and CO who
cannot read and write some lan
guage. It also excludes persons who
come across merely to perform labor,
and with no intention of becoming
citizens. It declares all labor
contracts with aliens void, and makes
a violation of this feature punishable
by a fine of $1,000 or one year's im
prisonment, either or both. Tbe bill
also imposes a tax of 50 cents a head
on every immigrant. The aged' par
ents of children who have become
citizens of the United States are ex
cluded from the provisions of the act.
The Worst Tornado of Modern Times.
A torrible cyclone swept over the city
of St. LouIh on. Wednesday afternoon
last, and death and destruction marks its
pathway through the twin cities. The
list of the dead is simply appalling, and
even at this date it is scarcely known
how many lives were lost iu the awful
dessolation, but the number will doubt
lens reach the one thousand mark, though
the exact number, as in the great Johns
town flood, will never be known. Many
smaller towns iu Missouri and Illinois
also suffered lrightful damage from the
hurricane. The number of injured,
many of them fatal'y, will swell the list
very greatly. A district in tho city
bounded on the north by Choteau ave
nue, west by Graud avenue, south to the
city limits and east to the river, is vir
tually a mass of ruins.
Within this territory scarcely a building
has escaped injury aud thousands of
them aro iu ruins. Tho storm litorally
cut a swath through the city hall a mile
wide aud four miles long, leaving little
standing in its wako. Muny steamers on
the river were destroyed aud but few of
those on board were saved. Ot the loss
by drowning there cau be no definite es
timate formed, but the numbers run up
into the hundreds. Thousands are home
less, their property having bceu swept
uway iu the twinkling of au eye, but re
lief has been nouriuu in from all sections
aud the poor and destitute are being
oareu ior as well as the circumstances
will permit.
The property loss in the devastated diS'
triut is almost beyond computation, the
lowest estimates placing Uio amount alt
the way from JO,uou, ooo to 30,oou,00l.
