In his capacity as chairman of the
Republican State central committee,
United States Senator Qnay has ap
pointed the executive committee and
the members-at-large of that body.
Ex-State Treasurer Henry K.
Boyer is chairman of the executive
committee, and his associates are
Congressman William -A. Stone, of
Allegheny ; Congressman John B.
Robinson, of Media; Lieutenant
Governor Walter Lyon, of Fittsburg;
Es Lieuteuant Governor Louis A.
Watres, of Scranton ; Ex-Collector
Thomas V. Cooper, of Media ; Sena
tor William II. Andrews, of Titus
ville; Senator Boios Penrose, of
Fhiladelphia ; Senator C. Wesley
Thomas, of Philadelphia; Lyman D.
Gilbert, of Ilarrisburg; James h.
Holland, of Norristown, aud W. W.
Griest, of Lancaster.
The State committeemen-at-large
are John Russell Young, Charles II.
Heustis and Alexander Crow, Jr., of
Philadelphia; William B. Gill, of
Cheltenham ; Parker L. Walker, of
Pittsburg ; Congressman W. C. Ar
nold, of DuBois ; A. C. Hopkins, of
Lock Haveu ; Senator Yr. U. Brewer,
of Chambersburg ; Representative
Walter T. Merrick, of Blossburg;
Floyd T. Kinner, of Athens; James
B.jRaymond, of Altoona, and Wil
liam Connell, of Scranton, the Inst
named filling the vacancy occasioned
by the transfer of Mr. Griest to the
executive committee. All tbe gen
tlemen named have consented to
serve, aod Executive Chairman
Boyer will take charge of the State
committee headquarters at 1231
Waluut street without delay. Jere
B. Rex, of Huntingdon, and W. R.
Andrews, of Meadville, the secreta
ries of the State committee, are al
ready on duty at the headquarters,
getting the preliminaries in shape for
tbe opening of tbe campaigu.
Foun years ago they were rhyming
"Grover" and "Clover." Is anybody
doing that now?
Charleston, S. C, ha? now 108
manufacturing industries, employing
5507 people, and turning out an
nually over $14,000,000 in products.
The growth of Republican sentiment
in that State has been rapid of late
and is likely to be substantial.
Until further and fuller informa
tion on the subject is received we are
compelled to regard Mr. Cleveland's
letter to Don Dickinson, declining a
third term, as a figment of the imag
ination. Mr. Cleveland is not de
clining anything just now, except to
recognize Cuban belligerency.
During last year the town of
Bradford, England, increased its ex
ports of coatings to the United States
from $1,200,000 to $7,500,000, and of
"stuff goods" from 2,200,000 to
$8,400,000. It is hardly necessary
to ad that tbe people of Bradford
enthusiastically indorse our Demo
cratic tariff policy.
Senator Quay has secured an
amendment to the river and harbor
bill with regard to tbe improvement
of the Upper Allegheny. In the
item providing for a survey for the
removal of useless dams in the Up
per Allegheny he had the provisiou
extended so as to include all the
dams on the Conewango creek.
Russia's auxiety to have Spain
fight the United States reminds us of
the Newfoundland dog that wanted
the Skye terrier to thrash a neighbor
ing mastiff. The Newfoundland
wouldn't bave been able to thrash
the mastiff himself, but be hadn't the
slightest objection to urging the ter
rier to get thoroughly whipped.
When Secretary Fish sent his
twelve-day ultimatum to Madrid on
the Virginius case, in November,
1 873, the Spanish navy was, on the
whole, stronger than the American.
The Uuited States had built no new
irouclads. The Spanish fleet had a
number of uew vessels. To-day tbe
Americau fleet i tbe newer and
stronger of ibe two.
Tun trouble the Democrats are
having over .McKinley's financial
policy is buthering the Mugwumps
and Democrats. Not ono of them
would vote for him, no matter where
he stood.
The February imports of raw wool,
of all grades, aggregated the tremen
dous sum of $4,3G!',4G2 against Jan
uary imports worth $3,270,720. Thus,
during one mouth the delightful "free
raw material" policy of the Free
Traders injured the American wool
industry to the tunc of a million dol
lars more than the great record made
for the previous month. How long
will it take, at the rale of increase of
a milion dollars a month, to entirely
wipe out the American wool industry
aod exterminate the last sheep on
American soil ?
