THE FARMKKS' INSTITUTE
Was Well Allcniletl, anil Proved Highly
Instructive to the farmers.
Tho Farmers' Institute convened in
the Court Houso at 1:.'10 o'clock, Monday,
March 21, und on motion of J. Allmiigb
and L,. Agnew, Hon. C. A. Randall was
chosen Chairman.
The exercises commenced by singing
by the choir and prayer by Rev. W. W.
Dale Tho Instituto was formally opened
by tho chair, who appointed J. Alhnugh,
J. E. Wenk and J. B. Muse as secretaries.
Amos F. Lcdcbur delivered a brilliant
address of welcome, which was respond
ed to by Col. John A Woodward, of Cen
ter county.
Song by tho choir.
Too next in order was on elaborate talk
on "Corn as a Fodder," by Dr. Armsuy,
Director 01 I'ennsy Ivania Stato College,
which was demonstrated on tho black
bosrd ami was full of practical ideas con
ducive of facts.
Next in order was a very interesting
address on "Forestry," by Dr. Hothrnck,
this address was very brilliant, with il
lustrative facts, shewing the inevitable
result as affecting tho various interests of
all our citizens. Thero is nothing wo can
substitute for tiinbor.
Song, "America," by tho choir. Ad
journed to meet at 7::i0.
MONDAY KVKNINO.
Music by the choir.
Tho Question Box was next opened
and Hon. I. E. Dean very aptly replied
to the question, ny snouiu not expe
rimental and industrial schools bo estab
lished in every county and overy stato in
tno Union 7
The noxt nuostion. "Are wo ready for
the district high school?" was made very
lain by Prof. J. T. Kotnwick, of West
Chester.
What is tho bost remedy for pear
blight?" After being discussed pro and
con it was stated by Prof. Rotliwick that
more is no Known rotneoy for pear iiiigni.
"Will a larmer s daughter make a
good wife for a city chap?" was the next
question. A fter considerable discussion
it was decided that slio would mako tho
best kind of a wifo for such a man, but it
would be a pity to waste tho girls in that
manner.
Col. John A. Woodward and Socretary
of Agrlculturo Elge both presented very
aolo argument why htato aid should lie
given lor the improvement of public
roads. The latter favored permanent aid
only.
A thirty minutes practical talk on ' Ed
ucation on the Farm," by T. F. Ritchey,
l'.sn., which was Interspersed by a song.
"Coinin' Thro' tho Rye," which was ex
cellently rendered by Miss Minnie Lan
ders. the evening session was closed by a
song, "Don't Leave the Farm, Boys," by
tne male quartette.
TUKSI1AY MOllN-INO.
Tho instituto opened at :;) by singing
by tho audioneo led bv tho choir, and
prayer by Rev. Dale. The question box
was again resorted to and tho "best
method ot bringing up a worn-out farm"
was very intelligently discussed by Col,
Woodward, Secretary Kdge ond others.
What is tho oest method 01 destroy
ing the Canada thistle?" was discussed
by Mr. Dean, Soc'y Edgo, Dr. Rothrock,
and others, tho concensus of opinion be
ing that the bost way is to plow them
down. Soc'y Edge then gave an inter
esting aud very highly instructive talk
on fertilizers and how to purchase them
to tho best advantage. Great care should
be exercised in purchase aud usti. The
Bpeakor thought thut clover was, after all
the best and least expensive.
Dr. Rothrock very entertainingly dis
cussed black knots, or "fungi. "on cherry,
fieach and oilier trees; tho potato blight,
low it originated and its rapid advance
ment. Spraying judiciously, and proper
preparation of seed is the remedy.
TUKSUAY AFTKRNOON.
Dr. Armsby told tha institute very
clearly how to discover tho dilleronco in
existing fertility, after which 'Squire J.
C. Hoovler of Tionesta twp., gave a talk
on diseases or cuftlo. Tho following
committee on resolutions was then ap
pointed by the chair : T. F. Ritchey,
Amosf . liedouur, Li, J. 1'atil. 1. u.
Collins of Nebraska was then introduced
and gave a very full and interesting tilk
on the noeds of the farmer; make tho
brain do its share of work on tho farm,
thus saving tlie muscle. Ha also illus
trated the practical method or lull road
makiug.
t'rot. John Hamilton, Deputy seo y ot
Agriculture, was next introduced and
gave a thorough analysis of "how to pro
cure tho best stand of clover. This do-
leuiution proved to bo an interesting
hour in the session. Clover, he said,
is alone susceptible to nitrogen, tho one
thing needful; clover is a subsoilcr of
it-self, and finally has tho properties of
thorough phosphate. We can not too
strongly encourage the use of crimson
clover for tho improvement of worn-out
larms.
The question box was again brought
into requisition and the lol lowing Knotty
problouis discussed : What causes club
root in cabbage? Should use of wide
tired wagons be compelled by law?
How should we drain? Afternoon soS'
sion closed by singing America.
TUKSUAY EVENINO.
S. D. Irwin, Esq., ono of tho oldest
members of the Slate Horticultural So
ciety, entertained tho audience with a
short tulk on tree culture, giving many
new und novel hints in that art. The
question box contained many good con
undrums, some of which wore quite inge
niously answered. Alter another delight
ful song by tho choir, Prof. Hamilton
gave bis address on road milking. It con
tained very many useful suggestions.
Ho demonstrated that undor existing laws
uud ut the present rate of taxation, tho
Stale could, inside of eight years, have
tho linest roads iu tho world, if the money
was judiciously expended.;
Upon the adoption of appropriate reso
lutions submitted by tho committee, and
which will be published next week, to
gether wiih the new county organization,
liie Instituto adjourned by Dinging the
hymn "Sweet Bye and Bye."
The music throughout was excellent,
and a splendid feuture of the institute.
To suv that tho lirst Farmers' Insti
tute in Forest county has proved a most
complete success, is to but voice the
sentiment of every man. woman and
child who wus present. Every session
wus repleto with wholesome instruction
to the runners, who seemed to thoroughly
absorb every word that w as spoken, and
who said by their expressions, "we bavo
learned much thst we will surely put to
good use in tho future." And we venture
to say that tiie next institute will be much
more largely attended than even this one,
to which there was a remarkable turnout.
We very much regret that tlie crowded
stato of'our columns, just at this time,
precludes a more extended report than
this, but assure our farmer friends that
we will be fully prepared lor the next
event of the kind.
